Abstract

Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Fairclough was employed to analyze discourse regarding cyberbullying on Millen Cyrus's Instagram account, which has claimed herself as transgender. Most of the comments show negative responses. Some linguistic features are analyzed, such as 'bro,' 'laki,' 'tulen,' 'banci,' and many more, which refer to cyberbullying. With the sophisticated features of Instagram, it is no wonder that news could get about quickly. In the context of the situation, Millen could not avoid any attention from the media and the public as she is a part of Ashanty's family, an Indonesian singer and socialite. At the instructional level, it is easy to get more exposure from others since her account has been verified by Instagram, including Millen's followers and non-followers, as people quickly found her posts on the explore feature. The act of some people who put comments on a transgender account, like what they have done to Millen Cyrus, has also evidenced that their discourse is influenced by the existence of their culture, religion, family background, and so on.

Abstract

This mixed-methods study investigated students' perceptions of using English as a Foreign Language (EFL) as a medium of instruction at the University of Kutai Kartanegara. Data were collected through a questionnaire (n=25) and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative results showed an overall positive perception, with a mean score of 71.38 on the questionnaire. However, qualitative findings revealed nuances in students' experiences. While most enjoyed learning English and appreciated lecturers' engaging teaching styles, some faced difficulties with comprehension due to lecturers' delivery or their students’ proficiency levels. Students had varied engagement in extracurricular English activities. Interactions in English with lecturers facilitated language development, but peer interactions were limited. Most deemed English suitable for language classes but had concerns about its exclusive use in non-language courses given varying proficiencies. Lecturers employed motivational strategies like emphasizing English's importance and suggesting practical activities, but implementation of English-medium instruction was inconsistent. Benefits included improving skills like presentations and vocabulary, but challenges included inadequate proficiency, lack of motivation, workload concerns, and limited materials. The research contributes valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and researchers in English language education and international higher education, emphasizing the importance of creating inclusive learning environments that support both language acquisition and academic content mastery.

Duolingo, it is known for its user-friendly interface and gamified learning approach, has acquired popularity in the field of language instruction. The major goal of this study is to determine if Duolingo usage improves academic achievement and language retention in secondary school students. This study lasted four months and involved 40 students from SMA Istiqamah Muhammadiyah Samarinda. The collection of data includes Duolingo achievement assessments and questionnaires indicated to assess patterns of Duolingo usage, language retention, and app satisfaction. Statistical analysis, specifically the Pearson correlation coefficient, was employed to assess the level and course of the correlation between Duolingo use and language learning results. The findings indicate a significant positive correlation between the use of Duolingo and the retention of language learning, as well as an improvement in academic achievements. The results suggest that integrating Duolingo into the language learning curriculum is beneficial for students, enhancing both their engagement and learning outcomes. Furthermore, the study highlights the need for further research to explore the specific mechanisms through which Duolingo impacts language learning and to expand the findings to larger and more diverse student populations. This research contributes valuable insights for educators and policymakers seeking to incorporate digital learning tools into language education and underscores the potential of Duolingo as an effective supplementary resource for language learning in secondary schools.

In this quantitative research with correlational research, the researcher applied questionnaires to assemble the data. The questionnaire measures students' reading habits and the test measures students' reading comprehension. Based on the statistical data, the population would be around 2,362 students, and the sampling technique that would be used is a simple random sampling technique. Based on the table size sample, with a margin of error of 5%, it is gained that the total sample would be 330 students. The result of the study was the positive and medium relationship between these variables namely reading comprehension and reading habits. This research hopefully can be one of the references for identifying the literacy level of university students particularly in reading English texts

Abstract

This study was to investigate the correlation between students’ cognitive reading strategies and students’ reading comprehension. The population in this study were overall second-semester students of UMKT from all undergraduate faculty. The total population in the study was 2,362 students. The sampling that was chosen in this study was simple random sampling by selecting representative respondents from each study program. By using a table of sampling size with a confidence level of 95% (margin of error 0.05%), it was found that from N= 2362 total population, the total sample was 428 students. The conducting data found that there was a significant relationship (sign. 0.01) between cognitive strategy and reading comprehension among students at UMKT. It was proved from the result that the significant value was under the p-value (0.05). However, the level of correlation was small, it was because some respondents stated that they didn’t use their mother tongue or read aloud when they got a difficult text, and they used translator apps to get an instant way of understanding the texts. The suggestion for the next researchers and practitioners such as teachers is to use a cognitive strategy to understand English rather than using an instant way likewise using the application or asking someone else to get the answer or comprehension. In other words, cognitive strategies involve active engagement with the activity, which aids in comprehension meanwhile Reading comprehension is a cognitive ability that provides the ability to synchronize text information with background knowledge

Abstract

This research aims to describe the use of online assessment by English lecturers in the post-pandemic Covid-19 period. Specifically, this research seeks to identify the challenges faced and how to manage them. The research used qualitative descriptive research focusing on interviews and documentation with lecturers at Universitas Widya Gama Mahakam Samarinda. The findings revealed that lecturers used various platforms including YouTube, Google Drive, SPADA, Instagram, and Facebook. The challenges found in this research were varied due to the hybrid nature of post-pandemic teaching and learning. Challenges faced by lecturers included behavioral issues such as student discipline, plagiarism, password knowledge, and attendance, as well as technical issues such as students' internet access. To manage these challenges, lecturers implemented strict rules against plagiarism, set clear deadlines, and provided rewards like gamification. They also encouraged students to use their names as usernames and passwords and explained the features of the Learning Management System (LMS) to those unfamiliar with it. Additionally, lecturers shared internet data with students to address technical problems. Overall, the research found that online assessment appears to be a solution to meet the needs of lecturers and students, making teaching and learning accessible everywhere, effective, and reaching the target material taught for one semester.
