Abstract

This article discusses interfaith literacy in Indonesian Islamic education through a decolonial critique of modern religious epistemological framework. Current discussions on religious literacy and interreligious literacy have contributed significantly to shifting religious education beyond doctrinal and essentialist approaches toward more historical, social, and contextual understandings of religion. Yet these frameworks often continue to approach religious difference through liberal-secular categories shaped by Western historical experiences. Consequently, other religions are frequently positioned as objects to be classified, interpreted, and managed rather than as subjects participating in the production of knowledge about themselves. Using library research and a critical conceptual review approach, this article analyzes recent scholarship on religious literacy, interreligious literacy, liberal pluralism, coloniality of knowledge, and Javanese local epistemologies. The study finds that interfaith literacy in Indonesian Islamic education is commonly framed within agendas of religious moderation and counter-radicalization, leading interfaith engagement to function primarily as an instrument of social stability and governance. Against this tendency, the article turns to tepa selira as a Javanese epistemic framework grounded in rasa, reflexivity, representational humility, and attentiveness toward the position of others. Rather than treating tepa selira merely as local wisdom or cultural ethics, the article situates it as a relational mode of knowing capable of rethinking how religious others are approached within Islamic education. Through this perspective, interfaith literacy is reoriented from “knowing about the religious other” toward “knowing with ethical responsibility toward the religious other.” In doing so, the article contributes to broader debates on decolonial education by demonstrating how Indonesian Islamic education can become a site for producing alternative epistemologies from the Global South rather than merely applying Western models of religious literacy.

Abstract

Religious moderation is a key principle in fostering a tolerant and inclusive character among students, especially within a multicultural society and the digital age. Although many studies have discussed religious moderation in schools, limited research has specifically examined how digital literacy is integrated into Islamic Education (PAI) to strengthen students’ critical religious understanding in boarding-based Islamic senior high schools. This study addresses that gap by exploring the integration of digital literacy and religious moderation within two Islamic educational institutions: SMA Al-Huda Tuban and SMA Aisyiyah Boarding School Malang (ABSM). Using a qualitative multi-case study approach, data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and documentation involving teachers, principals, and students. The findings reveal that both schools integrated moderation values, such as tolerance, inclusiveness, anti-violence, and nationalism, into digital-based PAI learning. Teachers utilized digital media, including YouTube, blogs, and social media platforms, to encourage reflective and contextual learning, while students engaged in moderation-themed digital projects. The study shows that digital literacy functions not only as a technical competence but also as a critical pedagogical tool for evaluating religious information and resisting intolerant narratives online. Despite challenges related to infrastructure and teacher digital competence, the integration of digital literacy and religious moderation contributed positively to students’ critical awareness and inclusive religious attitudes. This study highlights the role of digital pedagogy in strengthening moderate Islamic education in the post-truth era.

Abstract

This research discusses the concept of environmental ethics from the perspective of Muhammad Qutb, emphasizing the relationship between humans, nature, and moral responsibility in Islamic teachings. The increasing environmental crisis, such as pollution, exploitation of natural resources, and ecosystem destruction, demonstrates the need for an ethical foundation capable of fostering human ecological awareness. This study aims to analyze Muhammad Qutb’s views on environmental ethics and their relevance to modern life. The research method employed is library research using a descriptive-analytical approach through the examination of Muhammad Qutb’s works and other supporting literature. The findings of the study indicate that, according to Muhammad Qutb, humans are khalifah (stewards) on earth who bear the responsibility of maintaining the balance of nature as part of Allah’s trust (amanah). In his view, environmental ethics are built upon the principles of tawhid (the oneness of God), balance (mīzān), responsibility, and the prohibition against causing destruction (fasād) on earth. This perspective affirms that the relationship between humans and the environment is not merely material, but also spiritual and moral. Muhammad Qutb’s concept of environmental ethics is relevant in addressing modern ecological challenges because it can encourage religious awareness and environmentally friendly behavior within society.

Abstract

One of the Islamic teachings that offers solutions to the problems of poverty and destitution is zakat, infaq, and sadaqah. Zakat, which is the third pillar of Islam, functions to distribute wealth from those who are obligated to pay it (muzakki) to those who are entitled to receive it (mustahik). However, in this study, the researcher focuses specifically on the topic of sadaqah (charity). Based on this phenomenon, the researcher is motivated to further examine the Actualization of Charity Verses from the Perspective of the Living Qur’an in the Friday Blessings Program. This study is expected to provide a more comprehensive understanding of charity verses through the Living Qur’an approach, so that the Qur’an can be understood as a living source of values that remains relevant in the socio-religious practices of society. Based on the research findings and discussion, it can be concluded that the implementation of Qur’anic charity verses through the Friday Blessings Program demonstrates that the teachings of charity are not merely normative, but also possess a strong practical dimension in social life. First, the Qur’anic verses on charity emphasize sincerity, social concern, and the promise of multiplied rewards. Second, the motivation of donors and volunteers in practicing charity is dominated by spiritual awareness, particularly the desire to attain the pleasure of Allah. Third, the implementation of charity verses in the Friday Blessings Program provides multidimensional benefits. Fourth, from the perspective of the Living Qur’an, the Friday Blessings Program shows that Qur’anic verses can be actualized in dynamic social practices. Fifth, critically, this study finds that the implementation of charity in the program still has limitations, such as the dominance of consumptive aid patterns, unsustainable social relations, and practices that may be carried out routinely without deep reflection.

Abstract

Studies on da'wah ethics have generally focused on normative Islamic teachings or contemporary communication practices, yet limited attention has been given to systematically examining the ethical principles of da'wah through a thematic analysis of Hadith and their relevance to the challenges of modern society. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the ethics of da'wah from the perspective of the Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad SAW and contextualizing their application in contemporary social settings. Employing a library research approach and the thematic (maudhu‘i) method of Hadith analysis, the study identifies key ethical principles, including hikmah (wisdom), mau‘izhah hasanah (good counsel), mujadalah bi al-lati hiya ahsan (courteous dialogue), exemplary conduct (uswah hasanah), non-coercion, and patience. These principles collectively represent a humanistic, persuasive, and socially constructive model of da'wah. The study further demonstrates that a contextual understanding of Hadith is essential for adapting these ethical values to contemporary realities, particularly in responding to pluralism, digital communication, and globalization. The originality of this research lies in its integration of thematic Hadith analysis with contemporary social issues to formulate a Hadith-based framework of adaptive and moderate da'wah ethics. The findings contribute to the development of ethical da'wah models that promote peaceful communication, strengthen social cohesion, and reduce the potential for social conflict in diverse societies.

Abstract

This study discusses The Relevance of Surah Al-Jinn in correcting social myths about jinn in modern society. Discussions about jinn in contemporary society are often no longer framed within proper theological understanding, but are instead mixed with myths, superstition, popular culture, and exploitation through digital media. Jinn are frequently perceived as beings possessing absolute power, having knowledge of the unseen, determining human destiny, and serving as the primary cause of various psychological disturbances and mystical phenomena. Such conditions give rise to irrational fear, practices of shamanism, the pursuit of wealth through supernatural means, and society’s dependence on unseen powers outside the boundaries of Islamic teachings. The research method used is library research employing a descriptive analytical approach. Primary data consist of the verses of Surah Al-Jinn and classical as well as contemporary Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir) literature, while secondary data are obtained from books, journals, scientific articles, and other literature related to jinn and social myths in modern society. The findings of this study show that Surah Al-Jinn affirms that jinn are creations of Allah SWT who possess intellect, free will, and moral responsibility similar to human beings. Jinn are not beings with absolute power nor do they possess complete knowledge of the unseen. This study also finds that social myths about jinn in modern society emerge from a combination of incomplete religious understanding, local culture, mystical traditions, and the influence of mass media and social media. Surah Al-Jinn plays an important role in correcting these myths through strengthening the values of monotheism (tawhid), rejecting practices of shamanism and dependence on jinn, and emphasizing that all power and knowledge of the unseen belong solely to Allah SWT. Furthermore, Surah Al-Jinn is also relevant in developing a more rational, moderate, critical, and Qur’an-based mindset in modern society when understanding unseen matters.

Abstract

The current ecological crisis, particularly deforestation, is not solely a technical or environmental issue but is deeply connected to human values, moral awareness, and perceptions of nature. In Islamic teachings, the concept of *khalifah* (stewardship) offers ethical guidance regarding the relationship between humans and the environment. However, this concept is often confined to theological discourse and is rarely linked to real-world environmental problems and human behavior. This study aims to reinterpret Qur’anic teachings on *khalifah* and the prohibition of *fasād fī al-arḍ* (corruption on earth) in relation to contemporary ecological crises, especially deforestation in Indonesia, so that these teachings can be practically implemented rather than remaining theoretical. This research employs a qualitative approach with a library research method, utilizing primary sources such as the Qur’an, classical and contemporary tafsir, scholarly books, and scientific articles on ecology and stewardship. The study applies a thematic (*tafsir maudhu‘i*) approach, supported by comparative (*muqāran*) analysis, to examine key verses related to environmental ethics, including QS. Al-A‘raf [7]:56, QS. Ar-Rum [30]:41, QS. Al-Baqarah [2]:11–12, and QS. Al-Baqarah [2]:205. The findings reveal three main points. First, the Qur’an presents a comprehensive and systematic framework of environmental ethics. Second, it not only provides normative guidance but also highlights that environmental destruction is a direct consequence of human actions. Third, the root cause of ecological damage, from a Qur’anic perspective, lies in the internal human dimension, particularly moral crisis, hypocrisy, and distorted consciousness. These findings emphasize the urgency of integrating religious values into environmental practices to address ecological degradation effectively.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) or paylater services on the resilience of Muslim households in Indonesia from the perspective of Maqashid Syari’ah. Existing studies mainly discuss the legality and financial aspects of BNPL, while limited research specifically analyzes its implications for Muslim family resilience in economic, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions within an integrated framework. This research aims to fill that gap by exploring how paylater practices affect household resilience and by proposing a reconstruction model based on Maqashid Syari’ah principles. The study employs a qualitative method with juridical-sociological and Islamic normative approaches using interviews, documentation, and literature review. The findings reveal that uncontrolled paylater use encourages consumptive behavior, digital debt accumulation, financial stress, and household instability. From the Maqashid Syari’ah perspective, such practices potentially undermine the protection of wealth (hifz al-mal), mental well-being (hifz al-nafs), and family stability. This study contributes by offering a conceptual framework for strengthening Muslim household resilience through Islamic financial literacy, digital consumption control, reinforcement of spiritual values, and the development of sharia-compliant fintech models. The findings also provide practical implications for policymakers, Islamic financial institutions, and family education programs in addressing digital debt challenges in contemporary Muslim society.

Abstract

Religious extracurricular activities are one of the school’s strategies for strengthening students’ understanding of Islamic teachings and fostering their religious character. This study aims to analyze the implementation of religious extracurricular activities and the factors influencing their effectiveness at SMP Negeri 1 Tolitoli. The study employs a qualitative approach using observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that activities such as congregational Dhuha prayer, short-term Islamic boarding school programs, large-scale zikir (remembrance of God), and calligraphy contribute to enhancing students’ understanding of Islamic teachings, discipline, and religious attitudes. The findings reveal that the effectiveness of these activities is more determined by the synergy between the school, Islamic Education teachers, the Student Council (OSIS), and active student participation than by the mere implementation of religious programs. Supporting factors include school support, teacher guidance, and student enthusiasm, while inhibiting factors include time constraints, conflicts with academic schedules, and the suboptimal implementation of some programs. This study contributes to demonstrating that religious extracurricular activities can serve as an integrative means to enhance students’ understanding of Islamic teachings while simultaneously fostering their religious character.

Abstract

Marriage after the honeymoon phase often shifts from romantic expectations to more complex domestic realities. This study examines how couples adapt to post-honeymoon marital dynamics and maintain household harmony. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving five married couples with 1–5 years of marriage. The findings reveal that communication problems, financial pressures, unequal role distribution, emotional exhaustion, and social media influence are the main challenges experienced by couples in early household life. However, couples who develop open communication, emotional maturity, mutual support, and collaborative problem-solving tend to maintain more stable and harmonious relationships. The study highlights that marital harmony is not solely determined by love and romance, but by the ability to adapt to changing realities and resolve conflicts constructively. The novelty of this research lies in its focus on post-honeymoon adaptation as a continuous relational process shaped by interpersonal communication, emotional resilience, and socio-digital influences in modern married life. This study contributes to family psychology and interpersonal communication studies by emphasizing realistic marital adaptation rather than idealized romantic relationships.
