Abstract

It is widely reported that several institutions of higher learning in various parts of the world attempted to mitigate the risks of learning disruptions occasioned by school closures, by switching to the online system of education. In the Nigerian context however the field experience component of teacher education witnessed an unprecedented setback as the online system that was later activated in some universities failed to factor the component into the alternative arrangement. Given that the present COVID-19 is not likely to be the last, as established by various reports including the World Bank December, 2021 document, the exercise may have to be suspended or delayed whenever there are emergency school closure. This paper attempts to formulate a COVID-19 compliant field experience framework for the Nigerian setting. The formulation is based on findings from a survey of emerging COVID-19 focussed alternatives and preservice teachers. The paper whose context comprises three Nigerian public universities where the lead researcher was, at different times, a field experience assessor employs a combination of a survey method, the philosophical method, observation, document analysis, and creative synthesis. The literature, findings from the survey and online interviews with student teachers constitute the bases of the formulation.

Abstract

Border discords are one of Africa's unending vestiges of European colonialism/imperialism; the Bakassi peninsula dispute between Cameroon and Nigeria was one of such. The subsequent discovery of large deposits of natural resources in the Bakassi region made Cameroon and Nigeria to engage into claims and counterclaims, bilateral diplomacy, military skirmishes, and finally resorting to the World Court or International Court of Justice (ICJ) for judgement. After eight years of deliberations, the court finally adjudged and declared that Bakassi belongs to Cameroon, sparking widespread criticism from Nigeria. Popular opinion in Nigeria held/holds that Nigeria benefited little or nothing following the ICJ verdict of October 10, 2002 and that Cameroon gained exponentially. Thus, the premise of this paper is to outline the gains and losses of both Nigeria and Cameroon following the International Court of Justice’s ruling, and to debunk the Nigerian perception of the verdict being partial and willy-nilly in nature. Using the qualitative method of research, secondary data based on previous research on the Bakassi saga was used. Using content analyses on the secondary data obtained, observations were made on what both Cameroon and Nigeria lost or gained after the World Court's verdict over the Bakassi peninsula. In its findings, this paper proffers that the gains and losses accruing to both countries are evenly distributed. This research can be a springboard for Cameroon and Nigeria to look beyond their gain and losses, and jointly carryout developmental activities in the Bakassi peninsula so as avoid future ethno-nationalistic tendencies in the area

Abstract

Grammatical knowledge plays a crucial role in the process of writing. Most ESL learners are encountering several grammatical errors in their writing skills. For this reason, they are producing a different kind of grammatical errors, particularly in their Essay writing. This present study attempts to analyse the dominant grammatical errors and the causes of the errors which are committed by the ESL students of the English Department at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka. The study was effectively conducted by collecting authentic data in relation to this topic. The data were collected from the sixteen selected ESL students by distributing a Google form, conducting an Interview, and finally placing an Essay writing test to evaluate their errors. After finishing the data collection, the grammatical errors were classified into eleven categories based on the questionnaire distribution and Essay writing test. Those identified grammatical errors were Capitalization, Spelling, Punctuation, Article, Preposition, Verb tense, Question, Subject-verb agreement, Word order, Word choice, and Plurality. The results of this data collection illustrate that the most dominant errors were Verb tense. Its percentage is 56.3%. The minority of errors were Plurality (6.3%). The second most dominant error was Word choice (43.8%). On the other hand, there were three types of grammatical errors Punctuation, Capitalization, and Subject-verb agreement, committed by the ESL students at the similar level (18.8%). 37.5% percentage of grammatical errors were in Spelling. The last first errors were Preposition, Word order, and Question in the equal level (12.5%). The current study investigated that the causes of errors were first language interference, lack of vocabulary knowledge, unawareness of tenses, poor speaking skills in the English language, and less writing practice. Meanwhile, the dominance of the first language was considered as the major cause of the students' errors in writing. In a nutshell, the ESL students of the English Department at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka still have a serious problem in particular grammatical aspects. Therefore, at the end of this study, there were some beneficial suggestions suggested that the lecturers and the students must do some efforts to reduce the grammatical errors in writing.

Abstract

Creativity in learning is an enjoyable experience for most students who are studying mathematics. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented experiences to students, learning mathematics is questionably creative and enjoyable nowadays. This study intends to measure the level of creativity and how enjoyable is learning mathematics amidst the pandemic. The study develops statistical models to capture the different factors that significantly influence the students' creativity and enjoyable experience in learning mathematics. A selected secondary data from the existing study was utilized and analyzed through some descriptive measures and a regression method as well as its diagnostics. Results revealed that the mean perception scores (scale of 1 to 10) for the level of creativity and enjoyment are 5.27 and 5.17, respectively. This implies that there is only moderate creativity and enjoyment in learning mathematics amidst the pandemic. Findings showed that the predictors of students' level of creativity in learning mathematics are "synchronous learning modality", "learning environment" and "health aspect". In addition, it is revealed that "age", "learning environment", and "health aspect" are significant predictors of students' level of enjoyment. Thus, teachers must maintain a lively and motivating learning environment for students by giving them interesting and enjoyable mathematics learning activities. Furthermore, teachers and students are advised to do physical exercise and maintain a good diet to become healthy amidst the pandemic.

Abstract

This study has three objectives- to identify the socio-economic difference between the empty nest and non-empty nest rural elderly, to find out the difference between them based on their relationship with their children, and to differentiate the pattern of mental anxieties between them. The social survey method has been applied for data collection. For the empty-nest elderly, the researcher has selected three villages under the district of Jhenaidah. The non-empty-nest elderly researcher has established Shatoil village under the district of Naogaon. Data were collected from a total of 132 (100 non-empty-nest and 32 empty-nest) respondents using purposive sampling with informed consent. A semi-structured interview schedule was applied to collect the data. In this study, most empty-nest respondents' socio-economic conditions were satisfactory, but non-empty-nest respondents' socio-economic conditions were not. In both cases, the highest of the (empty-nest and non-empty-nest) respondents’ relationship with children was good and had no difference. The main difference between them is in the case of service providers. The greatest of the non-empty-nest elderly did not feel loneliness and mental anxieties. On the other hand, all the empty-nest respondents felt lonely and most suffered from mental anxietyanxieties. GOs and NGOs should build up adult recreation centers and old homes and train elders on using modern technology (such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, Skype, etc.) to communicate with children. It will mitigate their loneliness and mental anxiety

Abstract

Limited customer and producer relations research develops various food souvenir products through online marketing communication. This research focused on the actions of food providers in developing food souvenir innovation as a result of interaction with customers through the online marketing communication medium. This research differs from previous research on media interaction and focuses on consumer response as the driving force for the innovation process on food. This study used qualitative research that analyzed one online souvenir food shop as the study case. The interviews and observations data are grouped based on a theory with a narrow interpretation or deductive approach. The data is presented in the form of interview quotes, sample images of data sources, and limited understanding according to the appearance of the data. The study found that customer and producer relations in online marketing communication did not encourage innovation for food souvenirs. The interaction between food providers and Instagram followers was more accurately described as an interaction in the form of product purchases. The actions of food providers in developing new products result from relations between actors and other selling actors in the form of reactions to similar food development trends. Creating fresh foods as the result of innovative action follows the trend of similar products in the development of Bogor's online food souvenir market
