Abstract

This study examines how intellectual disability and structural injustice are constructed in Miracle in Cell No. 7, directed by Hanung Bramantyo. It aims to analyze the discursive construction of disability and the reproduction of structural discrimination within legal and social contexts. Using a qualitative research design with a critical discourse analysis approach, this study applies Critical Disability Theory to interpret selected dialogues and key scenes that reflect power relations and institutional practices within the narrative. The findings reveal that intellectual disability is constructed as deviance within legal discourse, leading to discursive marginalization and the denial of agency. Discrimination operates structurally through institutional mechanisms such as coercive interrogation, lack of accommodation, and biased legal procedures within the criminal justice system. At the social level, stigma and dominant cultural narratives construct disability as a marker of danger and incompetence, reinforcing exclusion and legitimizing injustice. The novelty of this study lies in highlighting how cinematic narratives reproduce institutionalized ableism across both legal and social domains. It contributes to Critical Disability Studies by emphasizing discrimination as a multidimensional and structurally embedded phenomenon shaped by power relations. Practically, the study underscores the need for disability-inclusive legal frameworks and increased social awareness to promote justice, equality, and dignity for persons with disabilities.

Abstract

This study examines the factors contributing to the protagonist's attitude change in All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. The research focuses on how personal experiences and social interactions shape the psychological transformation of the main character. The narrative centers on two adolescents, Violet Markey and Theodore Finch, who struggle with trauma and emotional instability. Violet, in particular, undergoes a significant shift in attitude following the death of her sister, which leads her to become withdrawn and emotionally detached. This study employs a psychological approach to literature, applying Azwar's theory of attitude change to identify influencing factors. A descriptive qualitative method is utilized to analyze textual data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences from the novel. The findings reveal that attitude change is influenced by three key factors: personal experience, the influence of significant others, and emotional factors. Among these, personal trauma and interpersonal relationships emerge as the most dominant factors affecting the protagonist's transformation. This study highlights the complexity of human attitudes and demonstrates how literary works can reflect psychological realities, particularly in the context of adolescent development and coping mechanisms.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of pictures as instructional media for teaching English vocabulary to second-year students at MTs Ta’dib Al-Mu’allimin Al-Islamy. Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component of language learning; however, many students face difficulties in understanding and retaining new words. Therefore, the use of visual media, particularly pictures, is considered an effective strategy to facilitate vocabulary acquisition. This research adopts a qualitative study design, aiming to provide an in-depth understanding of how picture-based instruction is implemented and how it influences students’ vocabulary learning. Data were collected through classroom observations, documentation, questionnaires, and vocabulary tests to obtain both descriptive and supportive quantitative evidence. The combination of these instruments allows for data triangulation to enhance the validity of the findings. The results indicate that the use of pictures significantly improves students’ vocabulary mastery and increases their engagement in the learning process. Visual media help students comprehend meanings more easily, retain vocabulary more effectively, and participate more actively in classroom activities. Furthermore, the results of the vocabulary tests show a noticeable improvement in students’ scores after the implementation of picture-based instruction, with the majority of students achieving scores above the minimum mastery criterion (KKM). Therefore, the use of pictures is an effective and engaging instructional medium for teaching vocabulary. It not only enhances students’ understanding and retention but also fosters active participation in the classroom. Therefore, teachers are strongly encouraged to integrate visual media into their teaching strategies to support students’ vocabulary development.

Abstract

Conjunctions are essential for organizing discourse and signaling relationships between ideas, yet second language learners often struggle to use them accurately in spoken English. Among these, “besides” is particularly challenging due to its nuanced semantic and pragmatic functions. This qualitative study adopts Conversation Analysis (CA) to investigate the use of “besides” by Chinese university students in advanced English group discussions. Drawing on 15.9 hours of recorded interactional data from five Chinese undergraduates, the study identifies non-target-like uses of “besides” in naturally occurring talk. Five error types are found: misuse as a simple listing connector, misuse as an afterthought marker, overuse to connect aligned ideas, overuse as a redundant connector, and underuse as a clarifying connector. These errors stem from the complexity of “besides”, negative transfer from native-language conjunctions, instructional emphasis on surface-level coherence, and limited systematic training in spoken and written academic English. The study highlights the importance of understanding connectives in both semantic and pragmatic contexts and suggests pedagogical strategies to improve learners’ accurate and contextually appropriate use of “besides” in spoken English.

Abstract

This study explores the use of symbolism in Alfonso Cuarón's film A Little Princess (1995). Using a qualitative descriptive method and semiotic analysis based on Charles Sanders Peirce's theory, this research identifies how symbolic elements function as representations of the main character's emotional journey, personal transformation, and inner resilience. The findings reveal three types of symbols based on Peirce's classification. Natural symbols include weather and atmosphere (cold weather and snow, the smell of warm food, colorful sky like a peacock's tail). Conventional symbols consist of color symbols (black dress, dark tones, bright colors during the birthday scene), object symbols (Emily the doll, birthday cake, the locket), and nature symbols (colorful sky, cold weather, warm wind). Singular symbols include imagination as a shield, the magic circle, and the attic transformation. These findings demonstrate that Cuarón employs symbolism not only for visual storytelling but also as a narrative tool to express deeper emotional and psychological meanings. The symbols effectively convey Sara Crewe's struggle against injustice and her ability to endure adversity through imagination and empathy, enriching the film's themes of loss, identity, hope, and resilience.

Abstract

This research analyzes the syntactic structures of noun phrases found in the editorial section of The Jakarta Post newspaper. This study addresses the limited research on noun phrase structures in Indonesian English-language media. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study examines noun phrases in three editorials published from June 3 to 5, 2024. The analysis identifies eight types of noun phrase structures: Determiner + Noun, Adjective + Noun, Determiner + Adjective + Noun, Determiner + Quantifier + Noun, Determiner + Participle + Noun, Noun + Prepositional Phrase, Noun + Adjective Phrase, and Noun + Relative Clause. The findings reveal that the most frequently used structure is Adjective + Noun (24.7%), followed closely by Determiner + Noun (24.0%). These results indicate a strong tendency in journalistic writing to employ descriptive language while maintaining specificity and clarity. The study also reveals that noun phrases in The Jakarta Post serve multiple functions including subjects, objects, and complements, with complex structures such as Noun + Prepositional Phrase (16.9%) and Determiner + Adjective + Noun (17.5%) being used to provide additional context and nuanced information. This research contributes to understanding how English syntax functions in Indonesian media contexts and offers insights for linguistics educators, students, and media professionals regarding the practical application of noun phrase structures in journalistic writing.

Abstract

This study examines psychopathic traits through the behavior of the protagonist, Esther, in David Leslie Johnson's movie Orphan (2009), using Hare's (1999) psychopathy framework. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through detailed observation of Esther's actions and interactions in the film. The findings indicate that Esther exhibits core psychopathic traits, including a lack of empathy, poor behavioral control, and manipulativeness. She demonstrates emotional detachment and indifference to the suffering of others, responds impulsively to provocation, and deceives those around her to gain trust and influence. These behaviors reveal a profound disregard for moral and social norms, highlighting that psychopathy can be hidden behind an outwardly innocent appearance. This study contributes to the growing intersection between literary criticism, film studies, and psychological analysis by demonstrating how cinematic narratives can reflect clinically recognized personality disorders. The study underscores the importance of critical evaluation and vigilance in assessing individuals, as external appearances may not reflect underlying psychological dispositions.

Abstract

This study examines the theme of intimidation and female resistance in the novel Beauty Is a Wound by Eka Kurniawan. It aims to identify the types of intimidation depicted in the novel and to analyze how the characters resist such intimidation. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. The primary data source is the novel, published by Text Publishing Company in Melbourne in 2002, while data collection is conducted through note-taking techniques. The analysis is based on the classification of intimidation proposed by Coloroso and the theory of resistance by James C. Scott, supported by feminist theory as the main analytical framework. The findings reveal that the novel portrays several forms of intimidation, particularly verbal and physical intimidation. In response, the characters demonstrate open resistance, in which victims directly oppose discriminatory and oppressive treatment. The study shows that women are often portrayed as more vulnerable to intimidation due to persistent stereotypes of weakness. However, the novel also challenges this assumption by illustrating that women are capable of resisting intimidation and confronting injustice.

Abstract

This study analyses code-mixing in the YouTube content of Beby Tsabina, an Indonesian actress and content creator on her channel Beby Tsabina TV. Beby frequently mixes English and Indonesian in her videos, presenting a rich case of bilingual language use. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research identifies types of code-mixing based on Marzona's (2000) theory and describes their functions based on Marzona's (2005) framework across three selected videos. The analysis reveals 14 instances of congruent lexicalization, 45 instances of insertion, and 47 instances of alternation. Functionally, the data show 4 instances of greetings, 31 of storytelling, 11 of expressing opinions, 26 of giving instructions, and 34 of conveying emotions. The findings indicate that alternation is the dominant type of code-mixing, while conveying emotions is the most frequent function. This study contributes to sociolinguistics and digital discourse research by providing empirical evidence of how Indonesian YouTubers strategically employ code-mixing to enhance engagement, express identity, and navigate bilingual communication in online media.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of exile and the loss of “the right to have rights” in Mourid Barghouti’s I Saw Ramallah through Hannah Arendt’s political thought. It argues that exile in the memoir is not merely a condition of geographical displacement but a structural form of political exclusion that deprives Palestinian subjects of homeland, legal recognition, mobility, sovereignty, and social belonging. Using a qualitative method with an interpretive-critical approach, this study analyzes selected narrative fragments, spatial symbols, and textual descriptions related to displacement, statelessness, alienation, restricted movement, and collective trauma. The findings show that Barghouti represents exile as a multidimensional violation of human rights. The Palestinian subject is not only alienated from territory but also separated from the political community that should guarantee fundamental rights. The transformation of homeland into occupied space, the ambiguity of citizenship, the status of the “outcast,” and the denial of return reveal a condition of rightlessness. Through Arendt’s framework, the memoir demonstrates that human rights cannot function effectively without political membership and legal recognition. This study concludes that I Saw Ramallah offers a literary critique of political structures that deny Palestinians the fundamental conditions for possessing and claiming rights.
