Abstract

Character education is a sine qua non condition for creating a good life. Students who have formed their character will be able to make themselves good citizens because they have a set of noble values needed in social interaction. Educational institutions have attempted to produce effective character education. However, the weak capacity of educators in understanding the workings of various educational approaches contributes to the failure to form character. In this study using a literature review approach, it is intended to answer the problem of how to work or the working principles of the character education approaches; habituation, modeling and teaching. The results of this study concluded that each of these approaches has a unique and distinctive way of working in shaping the character of students. Each approach also has an Islamic basis in shaping character. Of course, each has advantages and disadvantages, but educators must be able to place the proper use of these three approaches so that their effectiveness can be obtained.

Abstract

This article explores the dynamic interaction between Islam and local cultures in Indonesia, focusing on the acculturation process catalyzed by the Walisongo. The historical context of Indonesia during the Walisongo period encompassed diverse local cultures, including animism, Hindu-Buddhism, and indigenous beliefs. The Walisongo adopted an inclusive approach, adapting Islamic teachings to align with local cultural norms, languages, and traditions. This study reveals how this approach facilitated the gradual spread of Islam, leading to its harmonious integration with the rich tapestry of local culture. Recognizing the significance of effective communication, the Walisongo employed local languages, arts, and customs to convey Islamic principles. This strategy forged bridges of understanding between Islam and Indonesia's varied cultures, fostering unity and inclusivity. As a result of this acculturation, unique local Islamic traditions emerged, marked by the fusion of Islamic practices with pre-existing customs and rituals. The incorporation of Islamic values into traditional cultural expressions, such as the use of the wayang kulit shadow puppet theater in Javanese culture, exemplifies this harmonious coexistence. Unlike an assimilationist approach, the Walisongo embraced cultural diversity and preserved indigenous beliefs, effectively integrating them into Islamic practices. This preservation of local identity and cultural heritage ensured that communities maintained their distinctiveness while embracing the tenets of Islam. The process of acculturation not only promoted socio-religious harmony but also established mutual respect and peaceful coexistence by accommodating local customs and beliefs. This research sheds light on the transformative impact of the Walisongo's approach in diffusing Islam across the archipelago. Their inclusive and adaptive methods resulted in a unique Indonesian Islamic identity, characterized by the harmonious interplay of Islamic values with diverse cultural expressions. As Indonesia continues to navigate its religious and cultural landscape, the Walisongo's legacy serves as a potent testament to the potential for peaceful coexistence and unity within the intricate fabric of diversity. This study offers valuable insights for contemporary scholars, policymakers, and religious leaders seeking to understand the enduring legacy of the Walisongo and the importance of embracing cultural diversity for societal cohesion and inclusivity.

Abstract

In this research, Article 209 of the Compilation of Islamic Law (CIL) will be examined using the Quran. The question is whether the article is in accordance with the content of Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 180, which serves as the basis of mandatory inheritance. This conformity was examined through the contextual analysis proposed by Al-Balkhi. The terms "wâlidain" (parents) and "aqrabîn" (close relatives) are analyzed in the context of comparing them with other verses that encompass these two terms. The findings of this research can be stated as follows: Article 209 of the CIL has partially adopted the terms used in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 180, where the beneficiaries of mandatory inheritance are stated as "lilwâlidain wal aqrabîn," meaning both parents and close relatives in the literal sense. However, Article 209 of the CIL has deviated from the context of the verse since it includes adopted children and adoptive parents who must still have a blood relationship with the adopting party. Additionally, Article 209 of the CIL only mentions adoptive fathers and children, and there are no provisions for adoptive siblings. Consequently, adoptive siblings’ rights are neglected because of the absence of such provisions in the CIL version.

Abstract

This article examines the concepts of "Amr" (command) and "Mashlahah" (public good) in the perspective of Islamic education through thematic analysis of the important work "Kitab Waraqat" by Imam Haramain. Amr refers to the guidelines and commands in Islamic teachings that govern the actions of individuals and society. On the other hand, Mashlahah indicates the principle of seeking the public good in making decisions and adapting religious teachings to social contexts. In the context of Islamic education, the study of "Kitab Waraqat" provides deep insight into how the concept of Amr is applied in the process of student character building and teaching ethical values. This concept plays a central role in shaping the personality of students, who are noble and responsible. The study also reveals how the concept of mashlahah is implemented in the formation of educational policies, curriculum development, and the management of educational institutions. This principle of general benefit allows for the adjustment of religious teachings to contemporary needs, thus creating an educational environment that supports the holistic development of students. This article uses thematic analysis to explore the meaning and application of the concepts of Amr and Mashlahah in Islamic education based on the contents of "Kitab Waraqat.” The findings highlight the relevance of these concepts in forming the ethical and pedagogical foundations of Islamic education. By linking religious teachings with educational practices, this article illustrates the important contribution of Amr and Mashlahah’s concepts in shaping Islamic education in accordance with Islamic values and meeting the demands of the times.

Abstract

This study investigated the reception or response of students participating in the 2018 IAIN Surakarta Academic and Student Guidance Program (PBAK) to the Shubbanul Wathan March Song (LMSW). These students come from various backgrounds of different religious organizations, and this study aims to analyze how they receive the dominant meaning in the LMSW text as well as the factors that influence their reception of the song. The approach used in this research is qualitative and descriptive; however, it also utilizes quantitative data. Reception analysis was used as the theoretical framework and analysis in this study. The research was conducted at IAIN Surakarta from May 3, 2019, to September 30, 2019, with the research subjects being students participating in PBAK IAIN Surakarta in 2018. The results of this study revealed the following. First, PBAK students accept the dominant meaning of the LMSW text, which includes aspects of nationalism, love for the country, and the spirit of state defense. However, they also placed the song in opposition to some of the meanings advocated by the PBAK committee. Students believe that the inclusion of LMSW as a compulsory song in PBAK is not an appropriate action because PBAK and IAIN Surakarta as state institutions are expected to remain neutral from the affiliation of certain religious organizations, while LMSW is known as a song belonging to Nahdlatul Ulama. Second, opposition to this meaning is influenced by the religious background of each student, with the main factor being their lack of understanding of the LMSW's position as the National Anthem. Their rejection is based on the assumption that LMSW is associated more with Nahdlatul Ulama than with national identity.

Abstract

Religion has two inherent characteristics. It will be transcendent if it is expressed as servitude to God. However, it becomes profane when articulated into fellow human beings' lives. Thus, religion cannot be separated from the influence of the culture in which humans exist. Through an intercultural theological approach, this study intends to show the thoughts of Kiai Hashim Asyari, who can integrate Sunni theological discourses relevant to Indonesian society's culture without reducing the fundamental values of faith. This study argues that Kiai Hashim's view of theological discourse can be introduced as the idea of "local theology." Adopting the historical research method of critical thinking and the approach of intercultural studies revealed that the concept of intercultural theology in Kiai Hashim's thought is a strategy to contextualize Islam. Its relevance in Indonesia, Islamic theology has been successfully articulated not only limited to ritual sacraments but also appreciative of local elements, as well as contributing to developing a spirit of nationalism. The style of theology shown by Kiai Hashim can be seen as genuine, bearing in mind that theological discourse tends to be exclusive, which must follow its origins complete with cultural and social settings without considering the existing local character. With this religious style, its adherents can be contextual and relevant.

Abstract

This article discusses the cancellation of grants from the perspective of Islamic law and Indonesian civil law with an engagement theory approach. A grant is a legal transaction that involves a voluntary transfer of ownership, but there are situations where the grantor or grantee can cancel a grant. The purpose of this study is to analyze the views of Islamic law and Indonesian civil law regarding the cancellation of grants and explore the similarities and differences between the two legal systems in this context. Through an engagement theory approach, this article analyses the legal basis and requirements for grant cancellation in both legal systems. In Islamic law, grant annulment can be carried out based on Sharia principles that regulate the concept of hijab and qabul and the legal requirements of grants. On the other hand, Indonesian civil law regulates grant cancellation through the norms contained in the Civil Code and related laws and regulations. A comparative analysis is also conducted to identify similarities and differences in the views of the two legal systems regarding the reasons, procedures, and consequences of grant cancellation. In this context, this research provides an in-depth insight into the convergence or divergence between Islamic law and Indonesian civil law in addressing the issue of grant cancellation. The results of this research provide a deeper understanding of the relevant legal aspects in the context of grant cancellation in Islamic law and Indonesian civil law. By understanding their perspectives, parties involved in grant transactions can make more informed decisions and minimize the risk of future disputes. In addition, this article also contributes to the legal literature by exploring a comprehensive comparison between the two legal systems in this specific aspect.
