Abstract

This discussion paper explores fake news and its impact on national cohesion: the Nigerian perspective. Recently, fake news has become a global phenomenon and impacts nations' economic and socio-political activities. The current discussion paper utilizes secondary sources to buttress the effects of fake news on Nigeria's national cohesion. The paper opined that fake news intentionally fabricated and disseminated information to deceive and mislead others into believing falsehoods. Further, the study discovered that some of the adverse effects of fake news include ethno-religious crisis, electoral violence, and economic instability, among others. Also, it identified the causes of fake news as the mistrust of the ruling class by the masses, social media and affordable data, capitalist motives, late release of information by agencies of government, inadequate capacities of media outlets to verify and release authentic information etc. As a result of fake news, it is recommended that: There is a need always to check multiple sources to confirm the authenticity information before dissemination. We are encouraged to use verification tools and also check the metadata of the information. We should endeavor to be media literate; think before disseminating any information. However, fake news's menace may be impossible to eradicate, but its negative implications can be reduced or managed if we are committed to the preceding statement.

Abstract

Many scholars have studied the Covid 19 epidemic and online-based courses on English lectures using inventive good strategy mapping. Using two online platforms, this study investigated the social practices in learning English as a foreign language. The research method used in this study is a quantitative descriptive method with fifty students from two different study programs: 1) Department of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Mulawarman; 2) Public Administration Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of 17 Augustus 1945 Samarinda. A quantitative description was used in this study, followed by an in-depth conversation with a sample of the existing population. The study's findings provide an overview of the usage of social techniques in learning English, with the two groups of students favoring the other five tactics. This research also shows how the two groups of respondents apply various aspects of the technique. The findings of this study are expected to be valuable to teachers and curriculum creators when it comes to setting up cooperative learning online. As part of constructive learning, social strategy is one of the strategies that support our learning style. It should be treated at any English level, rather than achieving learner capacity in English through group discussion. This study should be encouraged to everyone through added study with the same previous activities.

Abstract

This study aims to create a hybrid learning model, and Linguistics course instructional materials to improve students' language knowledge, theories, and skills, particularly in the English department. A research design and development process were used to construct the learning model and instructional materials. This research entails a lengthy process of determining the needs of students and developing Linguistics products or course material to improve students' capacity or skills in learning language through hybrid learning using a Moodle platform (e-learning). The participants in this study are English department students from Faculty of Languages and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar. The students in the English Education and Literature department served as the study's sample. The study's findings revealed a hint of a hybrid learning model based on Moodle e-learning, syllabus, Linguistics course design instructional material, and student’s worksheet activities or exercises. The creation of a Moodle-based hybrid learning model in the Linguistics course, which includes learning procedures and steps, teaching materials, and assessment of learning outcomes, is intended to improve student learning abilities, particularly in the English Department, which includes aspects of knowledge, attitudes, and skills under today's curriculum demands. The Linguistics course's teaching materials were built on a Moodle-based hybrid learning paradigm that adheres to active, interactive, and communicative learning concepts. In this learning, active, creative, and communicative learning strategies and techniques and flexible learning strategies and methods are extremely conceivable.

Abstract

The paper draws interlinkages between three factors, i.e., COVID-19 pandemic, the release of National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 by the Government of India, and the need for pedagogical changes and innovations concerning their educational implications the Indian context. The paper argues that COVID-19 pandemic has been a major setback for the ailing academic infrastructure in India. The immediate outcome might cause the severity of the pandemic and the increasing cases of infections across the nation, and the closure of schools and other educational institutions. However, to overcome further educational losses and compromises, the schools and colleges alternatively moved to online modes haphazardly. Ever since this transition happened, everyone has been trying to adapt to this new 'normal’. Despite the relentless working of stakeholders at various levels owing to these unprecedented times, the situation does not look inspiring. Though NEP 2020 was envisioned as a sigh of relief and a major game-changer in metamorphosing the educational system in India, particularly the learning gaps induced due to the ongoing pandemic. This paper attempts to investigate the dynamics of the major debates emerging as a result of the anxieties and upheavals posed by the COVID-19 pandemic: the response of various stakeholders such as administrators, policymakers, teachers, educators, learners etc. and the pedagogical implications for the teachers and educators due to these uncertain circumstances.

Abstract

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused countless impacts and influences on human life. It disturbs the order of life and macro and micro-economics, drastically and radically changes human cultural and behavioral patterns, and greatly impacts the concepts of church theology, pastoring, and ministry. This study is a descriptive qualitative study on the COVID-19 and normal & abnormal reactions & responses to it. Through this article, the authors observed that the COVID-19 existence has transformed and recorrected the Christian paradigm on 1) ecclesiology, which to date exclusively based on building to the real Church, namely God’s people in the form of house/“tent” churches; 2) digital media utilization in this Society 5.0 era as God’s grace to all humanity. Findings and changes in society through renewable technology are an inseparable part of the pandemic. A dichotomic gap of understanding between science and technology for centuries should be reformulated. New technological inventions and social media created by humans are media in the hands of God that should be utilized by the Church to minister in various categories to improve the quality of ministry and service; and 3) creative and innovative interpretation of threefold responsibilities of the Church: koinonia, diakonia, and martyria.

Abstract

Teaching English vocabulary to children in the classroom should begin as early as possible because childhood is a golden age when everything may be absorbed simply and rapidly. Language holds the belief that the earlier children learn a foreign language, the easier it is for them to master it, and that children may learn a language more quickly and with less difficulty than adults. This research aims to develop a learning design instructional material model of basic English Vocabulary based on interactive multimedia for elementary students and to increase knowledge and skills of language, especially for elementary school students. Development of learning model and instructional material design followed a research design and development model designed. This research is an extensive process in designing the students' needs and develop the product or course material of basic English vocabulary to increase the ability or skills of elementary students in learning language through interactive multimedia. The sample of this research is the students at one of the elementary schools in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The research showed a learning model based on the interactive multimedia syllabus and instructional material design of basic English Vocabulary. The researchers suggested that formative assessment be undertaken each time the materials are delivered to determine which components should be modified to increase the materials' instructional and motivating value. Furthermore, summative evaluation should be carried out in order to make a policy decision on whether or not to use instructional materials based on real evidence of their success.

Abstract

Some studies have been undertaken to decide the impact of hybrid learning on outcomes in higher education settings, with findings indicating that hybrid learning increases student performance more than distant learning or normal face-to-face instruction. This paper focuses on the students’ perspective on the impact of hybrid learning-based instruction in teaching English for Business Communication in Vocational Higher Education of Indonesia. This study is ex post facto research that aims to find the causes that allow changes in behavior, symptoms, or phenomena caused by an event, behavior, or things that cause changes in the independent variables which have occurred. This study employed a case study using students’ reflection journals and online questionnaires to seventy-five students of Business English for Communication class of the Vocational Higher Education in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Data were analyzed descriptively. In analyzing the data, the researcher used thematic analysis and content analysis. Data analysis steps are data familiarization, generating initial codes, searching for themes, reviewing themes, defining and naming themes, and producing the report. This study showed that students perceived the hybrid learning improved students’ technology competence, collaboration participation, and engagement, motivation, self-confidence. The impact of hybrid learning in teaching English for Business Communication can be categorized into three highly impacted, moderately impacted, and lowly impacted on students, attitude, skills and competence, and motivation. This study claims that the more positive students are toward hybrid learning education in the classroom, the higher their English for Business Communication performance. This research improves scholarly understanding of hybrid learning instruction in Indonesian Vocational Higher Education when teaching English for Business Communication.

Abstract

We investigated Nigerian’s post-colonial resurgences of internal boundary and religious conflicts that have bedeviled the country since independence based on the problems of national integration in post-colonial Nigeria. It argued that resurgences of internal boundary and religious conflicts in the country since liberation in 1960 are crops of expansionism in the sense that colonialism, while the postcolonial state could not avert the ills of colonial rule but rather re-invented the foreign strategy of division and law. It also argues that the scuffles for control of the naturally found resources in the localities are a result of “oppression, marginalization and government influence, uneven distribution of wealth and resources, nepotism and socio-religious bigotry,” which have over the years led religious groups, communities, local governments and States to a long-drawn-out deadly boundary and religious conflicts. The objective of this research is not only aim at highlighting the impact of internal boundary and religious conflicts on the Nigerian federation but also to draw the attention of Nigerian policymakers and researchers to the “neglect” of these issues, which have pitted groups between and even within states in the country, with deadly consequences, thereby questioning the principle of national integration and its essence in Nigeria. The methodology used in this research is the secondary source that has to do with published and unpublished works on the internal boundary, religious conflicts, and national integration. The paper submits that the existence of different natural resources found within the country should not always lead to the internal boundary and religious conflicts but cooperation amongst the people.

Abstract

The study aims at assessing teacher educators’ views on the prospect and challenges of e-learning in teacher education program aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. The population consists of 1321 academic staff of Alvan Ikoku College of Education Owerri (AIFCE). Two Schools out of the seven schools in Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education were purposively selected for the sample size of 249 academic staff. Researchers made an assessments questionnaire titled” Teachers Views on Prospect and Challenges eLearning in Teacher Education Program Questionnaire (TVPCETEC) was used for data collection. It has a reliability coefficient of 0.77 determined through the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation in answering the research questions. The study showed that teacher educators are of the view that e-learning is the key for effective teacher education program vis-vis the Covid-19 pandemic, which has called for social distance protective protocols. Challenges to effective e-learning, such as in teacher education, were also identified. But despite the challenges facing e-learning in teacher education programs, teacher educators accepted that e-learning is the key to limitless possibilities in education and should be fully embraced. It is recommended that Colleges of Education liaise with relevant authorities in benchmarking teacher education programs with e-learning. It will help tackle the digital divide among lectures and students for effective implementation of learning in teacher education programs.

Abstract

This research work, “The Black Man’s Burden and the Existentialist Challenge: Unchaining the African consciousness to action,” is acritical analysis of the human condition in Africa that has remained intractable right from political independence to the present and the right approach to stem the tide towards the Africa of the future. How is it that none of the about forty-eight nations South of the Sahara have made appreciable and sustained progress since most achieved independence in the 1960s, except maybe a few with exceptional natural resources. It has been found out that what has become known as the Black Man’s burden is a consequence of unacceptable poverty rate, endemic corruption, civil strife, wars, terrorism, banditry, and a low level of human growth and development. The idea that Western countries of Europe and America hold the key to Africa’s development is a myth that is not worth patronizing. The answer to the Black Man’s burden lies as they should in the hands of African countries themselves and especially the individuals and their governments. It is not the case that Africa has been the only continent in history that has suffered this human condition. Europe in the aftermath of the world wars was in shambles, and it took some conscious efforts of individuals and governments to consciously revolt against the absurd through a commitment to come out of the vicious cycle of finger-pointing as causes. The Black Man’s burden can also be addressed using the existentialist movement as a theoretical framework to bring Africa out of the present malaise of backwardness. An acceptance of the absurd and a conscious revolt against the same is what we need in Africa to address this sisyphusian like scenario.
