Abstract

This article is an attempt to analyze the practice of polygamy and women’s resistance in Langsa. It will describe the stand point of the women involved in polygamy in their effort to renegotiate their understanding on the Islamic legal ruling on polygamy through their daily activities. By applying socio-anthropology approach, it found that there are two types of resistance: hidden and opened. Hidden resistance (hidden trancript) is revealed through various expressions, such as tarnishing the good name of the spouse or the second wife, pretending to be obedience while doing other wise, or confronting the spouse’s ruling on handling the household. Opened resistance (public transcript) is carried out in two ways, either by asking a divorce before the second marriage takes place, or after, when the second marriage is carried out without the consent of the first wife. Finally, this article argues that the resistance expression of the women involved in polygamy is in fact part of their resistance effort against the dominant interpretation of the legal ruling of polygamy in Islam.

Abstract

There is a presumption of some circles of non-Muslims that Muslims are the spreader of terrors and terrorism throughout the world through the implementation of the concept of jihād. This assumption seemed to be justified the emerging terrorism cases involving Muslim actors, such as suicide bombings. This paper aims to clarify the issue by critically scrutinizing the true meaning of jihād rooted both in the holy book the al-Qur’an and sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad. Socio-historical approach is applied to better understand the holistic context of the meaning of jihād concept in both sources of Islamic teachings. The author concludes that the presumption is a misconception resulting from ignorance of certain parties about the true meaning of jihād in Islam. There is also a possibility that the misunderstanding is intentional, because the motives of abusing the dignity of Islamic teachings, especially about jihād.

Abstract

Jihad is nowadays often misunderstood and misused, especially by militant Moslems translating it as a fight against unbelievers in order to destroy them and/or to convert them to Islam. Such a view has reduced the real meaning of jihad. In the time of Muhammad, jihad was not necessarily acted as a fight against the “enemy” of God or the holy war as it is being widely understood today. It was applied as a hard effort to establish Islamic values in society. This article is all about the reduction and misunderstanding of jihad among moslems and nonmoslems. It delivers a historical analysis of view shifting on jihad, from its, wider meaning to its specific one that is using forces and practicing violance. It also launches some cases of misuse of jihad in society from its precedent to modern era. This article suggests a way back to the meaning of jihad as it was.

Abstract

Nowadays, in the modern era, we can obviously witness some groups of moslems still commit some terrors action to other religion and/or to out-group-moslems just because of different understanding of Islamic dogma. These radical groups of moslem claim that their actions are on behalf of religious’ belief. But, since the very beginning of revelation, Islam ask its followers to spread peace, harmony and prosperity among human being, as Islam have essential principle “rahmah li al-‘alamin”. So, certain perspectives or ways of understanding Islamic teaching applied by those groups are assumed to have emerged their negative response to other religion and out-group-moslems. This paper examines the significance of rational understanding to Islam proposed by al-Jâbirî to reinterpretation of jihad in the modern context. The point of al-Jâbirî’s rational view is relevant factor to eliminate and minimize normative understanding to Islam.

Abstract

The precise meaning of jihad is confusing to even moslem themselves and, let alone, nonmoslem. Many conceive jihad as a sort of physical war against enemies. Jihad also means conquering and subjugating nonmuslims and forcing them to convert to Islamic faith as their religion. But, if we look at in detail the Quranic verses and the hadith, we shall underline that jihad could also be meant as any kind of holding God’s commands. Observing religious practices, helping the poor, being patient and all good deeds are also jihad. Jihad in terms of the war is only allowed when muslims are being attacked by enemies, as what now happens in Afghanistan and Palestine. The association of jihad with violence, especially after the September 11 attack in the U.S. is a more political trick of the West, especially the U.S., rather than an exact definition of jihad itself.

Abstract

Some moslems perceive the concept of jihad simply on the perspective of political ideology. Jihad is understood as fight againts external enemies. This leads to the meaning of jihad as a struggle using the power of weapon (war) againts the enemy of Islam. This makes it contraproductive for Indonesian moslems who live in pluralistic society. Therefore, reinterpretation of the meaning of jihad is urgently needed to get a more contextual meaning in accordance with the Indonesian moslems circumtances. Refering to the classical literatures, the meaning of jihad, can be corrected to be more conceptual and practical. Jihad should contain a concept of collective struggle to overcome the actual problems faced by moslems such as economy, law, and education.

Abstract

Abstract

The term jihad fi sabîl al-Lâh is often used to refer to physical war in the path of God. The word, as it is derived from the Qs. al-Tawbah (9): 60, in fact connotes specific and general meanings. The specific meaning of it commonly found in classical ulema’s interpretation is related to the war. This interpretation is based on historical evidence and supported by the literal meaning of Qur’an and the hadith. But such a meaning is now criticized and regarded as going beyond the conceptual boundary of jihad in Islam. This article seeks to explore the general meaning of the term in the works of classical and contemporary Muslim scholars, aimed at offering a more contextual meaning. It shows that the term does not always necessarily mean the physical war in the name of God or religion, but it can be meant as education, human welfare, and social development.

Abstract

In the contemporary Islamic discourse in Indonesia, an Islamic movement initiated by a group of young muslim intelectuals emerged which offered a new paradigm in comprehending Islamic doctrines. The movement naming itself Jaringan Islam Liberal (JIL) carrys some jargons of modern life like pluralism, tolerance, inclussivism, freedom of thought, and human rights. Through sociological approach, this article shows that JIL has played a significant role in dinamizing Islamic discouse in Indonesia. JIL proposed the “individualism” of Islamic thought; it is called “individual autonomy” in Berger and Luckman’s term, and “Islamic liberalism” in Binder and Kurzman’s one. Some methodologies applied by JIL in promoting its ideas are ijtihad freedom, hermeneutics, reactualization of Islamic doctrines, and “al-muhâfazhah ‘alâ al-qadîm al-shâlih wa al-akhdzu bi al-jadîd al-ashlah”.

Abstract

Ibn ‘Arabî is one of the prominent and authoritative thinkers on Islamic mysticisms. Among his starting and brilliant ideas is the unity of religions (wahdah al-adyân), one of the fundamental ideas of religious pluralism. The supporters of pluralism expose his opinion on the unity of religions intensely and consider any religions valid and true. This article examines further Ibn ‘Arabî’s thought on pluralism. Through critical analysis on his works, I find that positioning his thought on pluralism issue is a partial understanding of his complete views on such topic. The unity of religions as described by Ibn ‘Arabî is a system of belief which is closely related to the Prophetical tradition and not merely based on the speculative assumption of human-being. He formulated a parameter—to see whether a religion is true or not—which contains three principal dimentions: the divinity, prophecy, and devotion.
