Abstract

Respect has demonstrated psychological, social and academic benefits; however, it has been a lack from attention for most researchers in promoting character development for the student. This article aims to critically explore respect as a moral concept and explain how respect can contribute to current discussions in developing character education, mainly from the perspective of one of the classical Muslim scholar, al-Zarnūjī, based on his esteem work on the concept of Ta‘līm al-Muta‘allim, as one of the references in learning and teaching guidelines among Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in Indonesia. Critical review from referred journal and book was conducted to the contributions in the domain of character education. There are three main discussions as the result of this study. First, it is respect to the knowledge as a light of understanding. Second, it is respect to the teacher as the most role model and actor of knowledge sharing; and third it is respect to the colleague as partner in learning process. Thus, respect in its three dimensional aspects should govern the learning and teaching process.

Abstract

The shar’i hijab has become a global fashion product targeting Muslim women. Nowadays, it is part of the cultural industry captured by capitalism in pursuit of profit. The shar’i hijab that displays a visualization of the discourse of piety and beauty makes consumption practices an effort to articulate the identity of Muslim women for religious observance. Massive distribution through the media or fashion show events is part of the visualization of the lifestyle of fashion fans which is echoed by the perpetuation of capitalism in the circulation of production, distribution, and consumption of hijab products which is reflected through the discourse of covering the genitals according to shar’i. Consumption of hijab product brands shows social class to differentiate themselves. This often leads to aesthetic violence in an effort to match the tastes of the lower class to force them to buy hijab products with the same brand as the figure they idolize. Consumption practices that show the articulation of Muslim women's identities in religious discourse are increasingly being captured by capitalism to create changes in hijab modes. The concept of obsolescence planning is part of production management for hijab product offerings that continue to grow, and capitalism is increasingly hidden behind the discourse of piety.

Abstract

This study scrutinized the historical literacy of Generation Z (Gen Z) Muslims about the pandemic and its impact on Muslim worship practices. The pandemic has raised not only questions about health but also worship. Employing a qualitative approach that combined textual and fieldwork research, this study seeks to explain the historical literacy of Gen Z Muslims about the pandemic. It also explores the ways in which they respond to the diversity in Muslim worship practices during the pandemic and the extent to which their involvement increases their Islamic historical literacy. The study was carried out in Surabaya, involving several data collection methods, such as interviews, focused group discussions, and surveys. The study reveals that the historical literacy of Gen Z Muslims fell short of expectations. Furthermore, with regards to the impact of the pandemic on the adjustment of worship practices among Muslims in their community, Gen Z Muslims are divided into three groups: affirmative, negative, and ignorant. This study also shows that Gen Z Muslims have yet to be connected intensely with community networks that allow them to participate in and improve their historical literacy.

Abstract

This study highlights the different Qur'an-Hadith visions regarding Islamic heroism in the Muslim community, especially in Indonesia. The lack of attention of Islamic scholars to the concept of heroism was significant, emphasized by analyzing the heroism of Muhammad al-Fatih in Indonesian Islamic comics, using the socio-heroism theory of Kristian Frisk. Critical discourse analysis reviews the relation of the Qur'an-Hadith visions in the Muhammad al-Fatih comic with the social discourse of heroism in Indonesia. Furthermore, this study concludes that Islamic heroism is recognized based on two aspects, namely the transcendental recognition from the information of the Qur'an-Hadith vision and the inherent recognition from the Muslim community. It also discovered that Islamic comics in Indonesia introduce the heroism of Muhammad al-Fatih due to several factors and objectives. First is the long-standing relationship with the Turkish community. Second, the Islamic heroism in Muhammad al-Fatih's actions is considered a sign of Islamic glories and brilliance. Third, his victory is considered by some groups as an example and a positive role model for Muslims from various aspects. Therefore, this research will significantly contribute to the knowledge of future Islamic scholars about Islamic heroism, the Quran-Hadith vision, and the study of religious comics, especially in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article highlights two main issues. First, how is the typology of urban Sufism practiced by the Kopiah community in Jayapura city? Second, what is the strategy for strengthening Sufism among the Kopiah community in Jayapura? This qualitative case study research garnered the data from twofold sources: interviews, multimodal artifacts, such as films, images, and relevant library sources pertinent to the Kopiah community’s activities. The findings showed that the Kopiah community practice urban Sufism in the form of innovatively and contextually changing tazkiyyat al-nafs (purification of the self). Although the community is not linked formally to any Sufi sect, it, however, is influenced by the Alawiyah Sufi Order, based on the recited remembrance, adopting the Ratib al-Haddad. Tazkiyat al-nafs rituals adhere to a loud voice. It focuses on the study of the Qur’an and fiqh. It conducts Islamic teachings via dialogues entitled “Ngopi” (abbreviation of Ngobrol Perkara Iman or talking about faith) and “Ngobat” (abbreviation of Ngobrol Perkara Taubat or talking about repentance). This study paper helps map a preliminary understanding of the urban Sufism in eastern Indonesia, particularly in Jayapura.

Abstract

Prayer as one of the essentials of human beings as "homo Deus", has become the object of studies from diverse perspectives: theosophical, sociological, psychological, phenomenological, and even political. This study will, however, shed light on this issue from another angle, namely a bio-spiritual standpoint, since the human being is made up of psycho-somatic features, or body, mind, and soul, with particular reference precisely to the human metabolism: endocrine system. This article will argue that human hormones, which have a pivotal role in human metabolism, are related to seven glands. These glands are actively managed to be stipulated by the activation of seven subtle energy centers, chakras, which can be done, among other things, by prayer (ṣalāh). To say the other way round, prayer (ṣalāh) will activate the seven chakras that will, in turn, stimulate the seven glands of the human endocrine system and will eventually boost the hormones that are significant for human life. In this way, this study will provide more illustration where "Scientia Sacra" (sacred science), concerning prayer (ṣalāh), meets "profane" science in a sort of "spiritual biology."

Abstract

Kitab Rukun Istinjak [Book on the Procedure for Cleaning the Private Parts after Relieving Oneself] is a manuscript that originated from interior Borneo of West Kalimantan in the early 19th century. The text describes the concepts of fiqh [Islamic jurisprudence], which provides not only technical explanations for the implementation of rituals but also a description of philosophical concepts for the consumption of the heart/soul. The context of the private collection of manuscripts is for a minimal audience, namely the sālik [follower of Sufism] who study and practice the teachings of Sufism in the way of Nūr Muḥammad [Light of Muhammad]. This Rukun Istinjak manuscript records Islamic teachings, which show the integration of Islamic jurisprudence into Islamic mysticism, which initially developed in hinterland Borneo. Even though the text indicates the existence of Sufistic-style Islamic teachings adopted by the indigenous Muslim community of West Kalimantan in the Putussibau area, in particular, there are no clues that explain their affiliation or relations with a specific tariqa order.

Abstract

Recent burgeoning assumptions claim that long-established traditional authorities are professed to diminish due to the rapid advancement of information media technologies. New and more flexible and democratic authorities have dismantled the abovementioned old power. However, contemporary social media transmission does not eradicate these religious authorities, particularly in the realm of Sufism. Sufi figures generally use cyberspace technologies to disseminate and reinforce their doctrines. Based on Weber's theory of charismatic authority, this study examined the authority features manifested by the Sufism figure Habib Luthfi bin Yahya from Pekalongan Indonesia on social media networks. It is encapsulated that the Islamic mystical school of thought is no longer maintained through direct or offline practices, but it has increasingly evolved into an online community. This study focuses on web-based content or online analysis, which means the focus of data collection is based on online sources. Through an analysis of particular usage of the internet and the media exposure about Habib Lutfi, the author explore the use of social media as an important vehicle for Habib Lutfi to strengthen the traditional religious authority.
