Abstract

Floating agriculture, which utilizes local vegetation as a growing medium, is an adaptive innovation that enables year-round crop cultivation in the waterlogged conditions of lowland swamp ecosystems. However, the long-term capacity of these organic media to supply phosphorus (P), a critical nutrient, remains inadequately quantified. This study evaluated the phosphorus-supplying capacity of growing media of different ages (1 and 4 years) derived from identical vegetation sources. Media samples were collected from a 0–20 cm depth in two distinct cultivation systems: one year old media used for mustard greens (Brassica juncea L.) and four year old media used for eggplant (Solanum melongena L.). Analysis of chemical parameters (pH, available P, total P, and organic C) revealed that although the one year old media exhibited a higher pH (4.73–6.84) than the four year old media (4.34–6.05), available phosphorus showed no significant difference between them (1-year: 5.62–28.90 mg kg⁻¹; 4-year: 6.00–24.46 mg kg⁻¹). This indicates that the availability of phosphorus in these organic substrates is less strongly governed by pH than in mineral soils, which is in contrast to established mechanisms. Furthermore, the four year old media contained significantly higher levels of total P (158–1451 mg kg⁻¹) and organic C (29.7-–5.6 g kg⁻¹) than the one year old media (total P: 137–703 mg kg⁻¹; organic C: 4.7–29.7 g kg⁻¹). These findings demonstrate that local vegetation-based growing media in floating agriculture systems possess a sustainable capacity for phosphorus supply, supporting the long-term viability of this cultivation approach in lowland swamp environments. Abstract

Improving farmers' entrepreneurial orientation and strengthening informal social networks are crucial for increasing the adoption rate of certification schemes in the future. Simultaneously, targeted interventions for older and higher-income farmers are necessary to address the specific barriers to adoption. Furthermore, certification programs must be carefully evaluated to ensure maximum economic and environmental benefits. This study aims to examine the determinants of sustainable certification adoption in Gayo coffee farming and its economic value. A sample of 305 Gayo coffee farmers was analyzed using logistic regression and an economic value assessment. The findings indicate that age and participation in cooperatives negatively affect certification adoption, whereas income, number of employees, land size, total production, and engagement with informal communities have positive and significant effects. From an economic perspective, certified farmers perform better in terms of production, income, and profit and demonstrate a higher willingness to invest in inputs and labor, suggesting that certification contributes to improved farm efficiency despite higher production costs. However, the presence of high-performing non-certified farmers indicates that certification is not the only pathway to success in this field. This study provides new empirical evidence on how sustainable certification influences the economic performance of coffee farmers, highlighting its important role in promoting inclusive and sustainable rural development in Colombia. Moreover, these results imply that public policy should design targeted support mechanisms, such as training subsidies, extension services, and financial incentives. Abstract

Paper sludge is waste that has the potential to be used as a soil ameliorant to improve soils with low fertility levels, such as Ultisols. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of applying composted paper sludge and NPK fertilizer on selected chemical properties of Ultisols, including pH, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total potassium, as well as on the yield of purple eggplant. The study used seven treatments consisting of sludge doses of 10, 20, and 30 tons/ha in combination with NPK fertilizer doses of 150 and 300 kg/ha. The results showed that the application of composted paper sludge and NPK fertilizer improved the chemical properties of Ultisols, with total-N (0.47%), total-P (0.16%), and total-K (0.03%) increasing, as well as producing the best results in terms of number of fruits (6), fruit length (31.00 cm), and fruit weight (268.20 g). The best combination for improving soil chemical properties was obtained from the treatment of 30 tons/ha of composted paper sludge with 300 kg/ha of NPK fertilizer, while the best combination for increasing purple eggplant yields was obtained from the treatment of 30 tons/ha of composted paper sludge with 150 kg/ha of NPK fertilizer. The application of composted paper sludge as a soil ameliorant promoted fertility in Ultisols. In addition, the more composted paper sludge applied, the more positive the effect on soil fertility and purple eggplant yield was. Abstract

Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a high-value horticultural commodity whose productivity is frequently reduced by heart rot disease caused by the soil-borne pathogen Phytophthora sp., which can lead to severe infections and yield losses of up to 100%. Cellulolytic bacteria, known for producing hydrolytic enzymes, volatile compounds, and antimicrobial metabolites, are promising biological control agents. This study aimed to isolate and evaluate cellulolytic bacteria from the rhizosphere of Bromeliaceae plants with the potential to inhibit Phytophthora sp. Research activities included rhizobacterial isolation, pathogen identification, cellulolytic screening, biosafety assessment, antagonistic assays (in vitro and semi-in vivo), and molecular characterization of promising isolates. Molecular identification of the pathogen using ITS1/ITS4 primers confirmed its close similarity to the Phytophthora nicotianae strain BG4K3b. Nineteen cellulolytic were obtained, exhibiting diverse cellulolytic indices. Dual culture assays identified A45 (47.11%) and FTA22 (40.99%) as the most effective isolates, whereas volatile compound assays revealed the highest inhibition by FT57 (55.18%) and K5 (44.98%). Semi-in vivo assays on five isolates selected through the Analytic Hierarchy Process demonstrated that all isolates could inhibit lesion development, with FT57 and A45 showing the highest reductions of 73.74% and 71.81%, respectively. Both isolates also produced indole-3-acetic-acid, solubilized phosphate, and exhibited cellulolytic index of 1.83 and 1.18. Molecular identification using 16S rRNA gene amplification (27F/1492R) indicated that FT57 was similar to Bacillus subtilis MS7, whereas A45 was similar to Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Y042. Overall, the isolates FT57 and A45 exhibited strong potential for development as biological control agents to manage heart rot disease in pineapple. Abstract

Red ginger plays a role in bacterial infection, diarrhea, and cough. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the ethanolic extract of Zingiber officinale for its antibiofilm activity against Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans ATCC 43718 (serotype B). The extraction process of Zingiber officinale is carried out by maceration.  An antibiofilm activity assay was used with the dilution method with the various formulas of 20;10;5;2,5;1,25 % w/v. The biofilm inhibition concentration (MBIC50) was calculated. The SEM analysis was conducted to evaluate biofilm bacterial growth after the treatment. The data was then analyzed with IBM SPSS Statistics version 21.0 using one-way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). The results showed that the ethanolic extract of Zingiber officinale had an inhibitory effect on A. actinomycetemcomitans ATCC 43718 (serotype B). This proved that the biofilm bacterial growth was effectively inhibited by the chemical compound of red ginger. The extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix degraded after treating the cell biofilm. It can be concluded that the ethanolic extract of Zingiber officinale has potential against A. actinomycetemcomitans. Further research is needed to determine the safety and efficacy of A. actinomycetemcomitans ATCC 43718 (serotype B) can be developed as an alternative antibiofilm

Abstract

The traditional wedding rituals of the Dayak Kanayatn use plants to reflect their spiritual bond with nature and contribute to biodiversity conservation through local knowledge. This study aimed to explore the variety of plant species utilized in traditional wedding rituals and interpret their cultural significance in supporting biodiversity conservation through culturally embedded practices in Dayak Kanayatn ceremonies in Ambawang Village, Kubu District, Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan Province. The study took place from March to July 2023 across four hamlets—Tanah Kuning, Parit Sembilan, Kuala Ambawang, and Medan Sri. This ethnobotanical study employed methodological triangulation, incorporating interviews, observations and documentation. Informants were selected using the snowball sampling technique, beginning with key informants and continuing until data saturation was reached, indicated by the absence of new or relevant information. Traditional weddings begin with a series of rituals, including makan pulut tunang, makan pulut rakeh, ngelulus adat, pembagian pirikng panganten, and pituah. Thirteen plant species are used in three of the five wedding rituals. These plants are used symbolically, either as offerings to ancestral spirits or as ritual elements intended to summon them. The ritual use of these plants affirms their sacred role, stressing the need to conserve them as ecological and cultural assets in the future. Abstract

Biosurfactants-producing bacteria are bacteria with the ability to produce natural surfactants that can degrade oil both in soil and water. Most of these biosurfactant-producing bacteria are often found in area polluted by grease or oil like palm oil mill effluent. The purpose of this research was to isolate, characterize, and identify biosurfactant-producing bacteria from palm oil mill effluent. This research was conducted using descriptive and identification methods through a general screening using oil displacement, drop collapse, and hemolysis assay, morphological characterization, emulsification tests and molecular identification for the bacteria with the highest emulsification index. Bacteria were isolated from palm oil wastewater by dilution method. In this study, 17 isolates were obtained with 2 isolates having the highest oil spreading results (SLP2.2 and SLP1.5). Both isolates showed negative hemolysis activity and were both identified as Gram-positive bacilli. Both isolates were cultivated for biosurfactant production and subsequent extraction. Crude biosurfactant extract was successfully obtained from isolate SLP2.2 with a yield of approximately 0.08 g/L. Emulsification index value of SLP2.2 extract was 36.93 ± 0.57%. SLP2.2 was identified as Cytobacillus kochii. This research provides microbial resources for microbial enhanced oil recovery and lays a foundation for practical application, such as sustainable bio-based products development.

Abstract

Land degradation has created an urgent need for innovative restoration strategies based on microbial applications. The microbiological approach using cellulase enzymes produced by cellulolytic bacteria is a prospective step to address problems related to land restoration and biodegradation of complex organic matter in the environment. This study aimed to isolate and characterize cellulolytic bacteria from post-mining soil collected at the Martabe gold mine site in South Sumatra, Indonesia. Isolation and selection of cellulolytic bacteria was performed on 1% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) medium, resulting of two non-pathogenic Gram-positive isolates, TSUS3.4.1 and TSUS3.4.2, with cellulolytic index of 2.51 and 2.26, respectively. Hemolysis tests on blood agar confirmed the semi- and non-pathogenic activity of both isolates. The growth curve and enzyme-specific activity was tested and measured in minimal nutrition broth with addition of 1% CMC with the highest activity values of 0.37 U/mg for TSUS3.4.1 and 0.17 U/mg for TSUS3.4.2 at the 27th hour after incubation. TSUS3.4.1 isolate has optimum cellulase activity at pH 6 and 30°C. TSUS3.4.2 isolate has optimum cellulase activity at pH 7 and temperature 30°C. These findings highlight the isolates potential positioning them as promising candidates for biotechnological applications in post-mining land rehabilitation and organic waste degradation. Abstract

Omega-3 concentrates developed from fish oil without any other components are excellent for overall health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the urea crystallization method in relation to the iodine value and the increase in total omega-3 fatty acids during the production of omega-3 concentrates from tuna fish oil using response surface methodology (RSM). Using the urea crystallization method, pure ethyl ester oil is mixed with urea, then left to stand at a low temperature with predetermined ratios and times to obtain omega-3 concentrate. The total omega-3 content in the crude tuna oil obtained in this study was 19.51%. The total omega-3 content from pure tuna oil was 32.90%. Meanwhile, the total omega-3 content in the tuna omega-3 concentrate was 16.97%. Longer storage times were found to reduce saturated fat content and increase omega-3 levels, as indicated by higher iodine values. Abstract

Pine wood (Pinus merkusii) is a native Indonesian softwood species with high commercial value but low natural durability (class IV), limiting its use in outdoor applications. This study modified the pine wood using a 20% glycerin–citric acid solution (1:2 ratio) through impregnation with 7 bar pressure for 48 hours, followed by heat treatment at 150°C for 6 hours, to evaluate surface characteristics in radial variations (from pith to bark). Retention (57.93–85.59 kg/m³) and weight percent gain (WPG, 4.02–7.20%) decreased from pith to bark, corresponding to lower wood density near the pith (0.55 g/cm³) compared to near the bark (0.67 g/cm³). Surface roughness (Ra) varied slightly from fit to bark, however its Ra increased after modification. Surface free energy (SFE) increased significantly from 16.87 near the pith to – 27.35 mJ/m² near the bark. After modification the SFE values varied between 37.16–44.46 mJ/m² from fit to bark. Wettability (K-value) was lower near the pith (0.002) than near the bark (0.007). Glycerin–citric acid modified pine exhibited also a lower wettability values compared to the untreated wood. The surface characteristics of the modified pine wood from fit to bark indicate that its surfaces should be coated by proper varnishes or paints for further development.Keywords: citric acid, glycerin, modification, radial variation, surface characteristics
