Abstract

Food security is a system consists of availability, distribution, and consumption subsystems. Food availability subsystem functions in guaranting food supply, in terms of quantity, quality (certification), variability, and safety. The main problem in materializing security of organic food commodities are quantity and quality of organic food, particularly vegetables. In other words, the organic vegetable can affect farmer’s economic situation in different way depending on the adopted particular technolog. Therefore, the objectives of this study are (1) to describe the characteristics of organic vegetable products, (2) to identify internal and external factors related to the production of organic vegetables with a farmer-based high added value, and (3) to formulate a strategy of the production of organic vegetables with a farmer-based high added value (certified). Data were collected by purposive sampling and analyzed using matrix analysis tools of internal factor evaluation, external factor evaluation, internal external, and focus group discussion, as the basis for analyzing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT), followed by quantitative strategic planning matrix (QSPM) to obtain the main alternative strategy for the development of organic vegetable with premium price. The study was carried out in Garut, West Java. This study confirmed 3 main strategic issues for the development of organic vegetables in the region, that is, market, organic vegetable production, and human resource.

Abstract

Agricultural areas in Western Bandung Regency continue to face the threat due to land area reduction. Development of rural community-based agritourism is expected to benefit not only for rural communities but also urban communities to better understand, providing appreciation, as well as being a means of agriculture education. The factors that determine the development of agritourism, integrated farming systems, local institutional patterns, and the existing program would give a formulation of community-based agritourism development model that is oriented to added value and sustainability of agricultural systems. Assessment on sustainability of the communities in Cikahuripan and Cihideung villages in terms of social and spiritual aspects show good values towards sustainability while the ecological aspects requires corrective actions.

Abstract

The short mackerel is the most commercially important small pelagic fish in Indonesia. Parasitism plays a central role in fish biology. Parasitism is a ubiquitous phenomenon in the marine environment and it is probable that all marine fishes are infected with parasites. Helminth parasitic of Rastrelliger spp. are Lechitocladium angustonum (Digenea: Hemiuridae), Lecitochirium sp. (Digenea: Hemiuridae), Prodistomum orientalis (Digenea: Lepocreadiidae) and Anisakis typica (Nematodes: Anisakidae), with 90.12% of prevalence. They are not significant different of helminth parasitic abundance from R. kanagurta and R. brachysoma, but significant in helminth species richness. This different of helminth species richness was because of L. angustonum dominances. The different location wasn’t have significant different of helminth parasitic abundance because Indonesian in the tropical zone. Anisakis species in Java sea have a same genetic with Anisakis typical and not zoonotic parasite kategories. The fish digestion was a microhabitat for helminth parasitik because they have much food stuff. The fish growth have significant different in helminth parasitic abundance and intencity. This situation was because the fish immunity development and the food habit of fish.

Abstract

Nowadays, forest-extracted wood cellulose still predominantly serves as raw material for pulp and paper manufacture in Indonesia. Consequently, the deforestation rate has alarmingly increased. The purpose of this research is to study the use of mixed microbial cellulose pulp from nata de cassava and pulp from empty oil palm fruit bunch (EOPFB) for paper manufacture. In this research, pulp of nata de cassava’s microbial cellulose was mixed with EOPFB pulp at various proportions. Additives (i.e. 2% alum, 2.5% tapioca starch, and 5% kaolin) were added to such mixture. Sheet forming without additives was made as a control. Addition of microbial cellulose tends to increase the physical and strength properties of paper and decrease the capability to absorb water significantly. The mixture of pulp of empty oil palm fruit bunch and microbial cellulose from nata de cassava has a potency to substitute wood pulp for paper manufacture.

Abstract

There are several option management measures in preventing sustainability stock of the blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus), i.e., nursery ground conservation. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyses habitat characteristic and its population biology in the PGN marine embayment of Labuhan Maringgai, as one among crab habitat essential in East Lampung coastal water. The potential nursery ground conservation was assessed by habitat suitability index, carrying capacity, distribution and abundance as well as crabs size. The result shows that environmental condition was still suitable, even though the habitat carrying capacity tend to degraded by an increasing of turbidity and sedimentation at the embayment mouth. The crabs captured were also not representing of peak abundance season and recruitment during sampling period, while those crab size almost 100% under Lm50. The strategic management directive is required to control in utilization of crab’s essential habitat, including crab fishing by any fishing gear resulted undersize captured crabs. Meanwhile, to propose habitat essential conservation might need more consideration and comprehensive study, including social economic and cultural aspects and co-management approach may be required in management measure applied.

Abstract

The extended of Gunung Halimun Salak National Park (TNGHS) coverage area pose a conflict of interest which is trade-off between the interests of the TNGHS main functions as conservation areas (ecological interests) and interests of local people who use the forest for economic needs. One of the intangible environmental services of TNGHS is natural tourism in the used zone which can be a win-win solution alternative to the trade off of conservation and economic interests in conservation area. Natural tourism in national parks is a payments for ecosystem services (PES) scheme that will provide added value, both conservation and economic benefits as non-exploited activity that will not endanger the national parks preservation. Therefore, in this study, how the natural tourism activities in TNGHS can support conservation and local economic improvement is examined. The high economic value of tourism and economic impact i.e. multiplier effect and job opportunity demonstrate that natural tourism in TNGHS as environmental services is very important. Natural resources and the beauty of nature in TNGHS should be preserved to keep the sustainability of natural tourism, because without the conservation of natural resource thus will be no natural tourism, which means there will be no economic benefit to the community.
