Abstract

Purpose: This community service program aims to enhance public awareness of the strategic contribution of the Tobacco Excise Revenue Sharing Fund (DBHCHT) to regional economic development and community welfare. The activity also responds to persistent challenges in DBHCHT management, including issues of transparency, effectiveness, and governance in regions affected by the circulation of illegal cigarettes. Research Methodology: The program was delivered through a live talk show on Kebumen TV in collaboration with the local government and the Customs and Excise Office. The session was attended live by 30 participants and subsequently disseminated through YouTube and Kebumen TV rebroadcasts, allowing broader reach and sustained access. Results: The socialization indicated that although DBHCHT carries substantial potential to support welfare enhancement, public health services, labour empowerment, and law-enforcement initiatives, its implementation remains suboptimal. Key constraints include limited transparency in fund allocation, inadequate community involvement, low absorption capacity, and persistent issues linked to illegal cigarette circulation. Conclusions: Strengthening governance, increasing public literacy, and fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration are crucial to optimizing DBHCHT utilization. Limitations: The television broadcast format limits real-time monitoring of participants’ understanding, engagement level, and feedback, thereby constraining the depth of evaluation that can be conducted. Contributions: This activity provides the public with a clearer understanding of DBHCHT’s strategic role, promotes a transparent and participatory model of fund management, and encourages active collaboration to maximize DBHCHT’s impact on regional economic development and community welfare.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to improve personal hygiene practices and Perilaku Hidup Bersih dan Sehat (PHBS) among elderly individuals through a structured health education program integrated with Indonesia’s national Gerakan Masyarakat Hidup Sehat (GERMAS). The program focused on increasing awareness, encouraging healthy daily habits, and supporting independence among older adults. Methodology/Approach: The program was implemented in Sungai Kamuyang Village, West Sumatra, using a community-based home-visit approach. Health education was delivered through brief counseling and demonstrations of personal hygiene practices, accompanied by the distribution of hygiene kits. Observations of household sanitation conditions and daily hygiene routines were conducted, and data were collected through short interviews and field notes with assistance from local health cadres. Results/Findings: The intervention resulted in positive behavioral changes. Approximately 85% of participants demonstrated improved understanding of PHBS principles, 80% practiced regular personal hygiene routines, and 60% engaged in light physical activity. However, only 40% reported routine health check-ups, and nearly half of the households still lacked adequate sanitation facilities, indicating ongoing environmental and service-related barriers. Conclusions: The program effectively improved elderly hygiene practices and PHBS awareness, though barriers like sanitation and health check-ups remain. Further research is needed. Limitations: The study was limited by a small sample size and a short implementation period, which may restrict the generalizability of the findings. Contributions: This study provides practical evidence for public health practitioners, community health workers, and policymakers on the effectiveness of home-based education integrated with GERMAS in promoting healthy behaviors among the elderly.

Abstract

Purpose: The training program on banana processing conducted in Sumber Agung Village, Kemiling District, Bandar Lampung City, aims to enhance the added value of local agricultural commodities, particularly bananas, which are the village’s leading produce. Through this activity, the community is empowered to process bananas into various high–economic–value products such as banana pies, banana cakes, banana chips, and banana jam. With product diversification, it is expected that bananas will no longer be sold merely in their raw form at low prices but transformed into distinctive local souvenirs that can compete in both local and regional markets. Methodology/approach: This study employs a participatory approach that directly involves the community in all stages of the training process—from planning and implementation to evaluation. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with participants, observations of production processes, and surveys of banana plantations and yields. Results/findings: The results indicate that the training successfully improved community skills, created new business opportunities, and increased household income among participants. Conclusions: The program effectively enhanced community empowerment through skill development and value-added production of local commodities, showing significant potential for economic improvement. Limitations: Several challenges remain, including limited business capital, difficulties in obtaining additional raw materials, and a lack of marketing skills. Contributions: This program has strong potential to serve as a model for local economic empowerment that can be replicated in other villages with similar agricultural commodities.
