Abstract

Asthma is a heterogeneous disease usually characterized by chronic airway inflammation. The disease is defined by a history of respiratory symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which vary over time and intensity, as well as different expiratory airflow limitations. Asthma treatment can be classified as controllers or relievers where the goal of asthma treatment is to improve and maintain the quality of life of asthma patients so that they can live a normal life and perform their daily activities without hindrance. Asthma treatment should consider both the giver and receiver of the medication, including patient compliance. Patient adherence to medication is an important component of asthma treatment. Thus, improving adherence greatly impacts lung function improvement, while non-adherence will reduce quality of life and increase treatment costs. Asthma patients' quality of life can suffer if they are not adherent to their medication, which can limit their daily activities, such as exercising, not going to school, and missing work days. The disease can also cause physical, emotional, and social limitations that impact the patient's education and career. This study aimed to determine the relationship between compliance with the use of inhaler drugs (β2- agonists + Inhaled Corticosteroids) to the quality of life of asthmatics at RSUD dr. Suhatman MARS. This study was a correlation analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The research design used a quantitative plan. This research was conducted at dr. Suhatman Hospital MARS in Dumai City. Sampling technique using Purposive Sampling. There is a relationship between medication adherence and quality of life of asthma patients at dr. Suhatman MARS Hospital with a p-value of 0.000 and a correlation coefficient of 0.621. Adherence to medication use has a relationship with the quality of life of asthma patients at RSUD dr. Suhatman MARS Dumai City.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the application of mindfulness techniques by students of the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Dakwah at UIN Surakarta in coping with culture shock during a student mobility program in Southern Thailand. The method used is a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, which allows the researcher to explore students’ subjective experiences in facing cultural challenges and to identify how mindfulness is applied in the adaptation process. The participants consisted of four students who took part in the mobility program and were selected through a culture shock scale distributed via Google Forms. Data collection techniques involved in-depth interviews and observation of students' experiences. The results of the study show that students applied mindfulness through five main forms: observing mental processes and external stimuli, describing experiences using accurate words, acting mindfully by being fully engaged in activities without distraction, non-judging inner experiences by accepting feelings and thoughts without criticism, and non-reactivity to inner experiences by avoiding automatic or reactive responses to events. These mindfulness techniques proved helpful in overcoming anxiety, confusion, and difficulties in adapting to the culture of Southern Thailand, as well as in enhancing calmness, patience, and openness to new environments. The effectiveness of mindfulness in overcoming culture shock was influenced by self-awareness and social support factors. This study concludes that mindfulness plays a significant role in helping students cope with culture shock and accelerates their adaptation process while studying abroad.

Abstract

This article explores the complex fabric of pre-Islamic Arab society, focusing on its sociopolitical structure, cultural identity, belief systems, and educational practices. Known as the Jahiliyyah period, this era was marked by tribal loyalty, oral poetry, and the absence of centralized governance. Social life revolved around kinship and clan-based honor, often resulting in inter-tribal conflicts and deeply rooted patriarchy. Despite the perception of ignorance, Arab society possessed rich oral traditions, with poetry, genealogy, and storytelling serving as primary vehicles of knowledge transmission. Formal education was largely nonexistent; literacy was confined to a select few in urban centers such as Mecca and Yaman. Most educational experiences were informal and utilitarian, shaped by the desert environment and nomadic lifestyle. This study examines how the lack of organized educational institutions reflected and reinforced social hierarchies and tribal values. Moreover, it reveals how cultural and environmental factors influenced both the intellectual landscape and the character of the Arabian people, laying the foundation for the profound transformation brought by Islam.

Abstract

This article examines the history, political dynamics, and contributions of two great Islamic empires, namely the Safavids in Persia and the Mughals in India, in the 16th to 18th centuries AD. Through a library study approach, this study explores historical sources and academic literature to analyze the factors of glory and causes of decline of the two empires. The results of the study show that the Safavids and Mughals experienced a golden age in politics, economics, science, art, and religious tolerance. However, both experienced decline due to weak leadership, internal conflicts, and external pressure from foreign powers. This study shows that the progress of civilization is largely determined by the stability of government, visionary leadership, and the ability to adapt to the challenges of the times. This study provides an important reflection on the dynamics of the glory and decline of Islamic civilization which can be a mirror for the development of civilization in the modern era.

Abstract

New starts require new motivation. Students also need motivation to learn the English language. Several studies have shown that motivation is crucial in learning English and depends mostly on extrinsic motivation rather than intrinsic motivation. The purpose of the study was to describe the students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in learning the English language at Instituto São João de Brito (ISJB), Kasait, Timor-Leste. The study aimed to answer the main problems: 1) What kind of motivation do the students use to learn English? 2) How motivated are the students to learn the English Language?.The researchers applied a mixed-method approach. The data were collected from 33 respondents using a questionnaire and interview. The data gained were interpreted and analyzed descriptively. The quantitative findings show that the student’s intrinsic motivation was higher than extrinsic motivation as rated with a mean of 4.22 out of 5. The extrinsic motivation was rated with a mean of 3.79, which is high. The qualitative findings revealed that the students took the English language as more than just an instrument for achieving academic goals. It was seen as an exciting language to learn. This study recognizes the importance of motivation to learn English and ultimately intrinsic motivation. It prompts future researchers to conduct similar research in various learning contexts to generate more findings

Abstract

This study explores the addressing system in Tetum Dili, a prominent variety of the Tetum language spoken in Timor-Leste. Grounded in sociolinguistic and cultural-linguistic frameworks, the research investigates how forms of address reflect social relationships, cultural norms, and communicative values within Timorese society. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with native speakers, autoethnographic reflection, and analysis of naturally occurring speech in public events such as wedding ceremonies. The findings reveal that Tetum Dili employs a rich repertoire of address terms, including those based on kinship, honorifics, borrowed forms from Portuguese and Indonesian, and even culturally embedded disrespectful terms used in both friendly and conflictual contexts. These address forms serve as powerful markers of social status, intimacy, respect, and cultural identity. The study underscores the importance of address systems in understanding language use in multicultural and postcolonial contexts, and it advocates for further documentation to support language preservation and education
