Abstract

This study explores English lecturers’ perceptions, experiences, and challenges in implementing literature infused with ecoliteracy in English language teaching at the higher education level. As environmental issues become increasingly critical, fostering ecoliteracy has emerged as a key educational objective. Using a qualitative research design, the study employed semi-structured interviews with three English lecturers at MNC University, an institution committed to sustainability and interdisciplinary education. Thematic analysis revealed that lecturers view literary texts as effective tools for promoting environmental awareness, critical thinking, and student engagement. Genres such as poetry, fiction, and drama were identified as particularly impactful for embedding ecological themes. The lecturers implemented a range of teaching methods, including project-based learning, group discussion, and performance, to enhance ecoliteracy in their classrooms. However, challenges such as limited curriculum flexibility, student disengagement, and inadequate institutional resources were also reported. Despite these barriers, the lecturers agreed that implementing ecoliteracy through literature enriches language instruction and promotes socially and environmentally conscious learning. This research contributes to the discourse on sustainable education by highlighting the transformative role of ecoliterary practices in English language teaching and offering practical insights for curriculum development and teacher training.

Abstract

Language manifests in various forms, particularly among the younger generation. Generation Z, in particular, demonstrates a stronger inclination toward using slang in everyday communication rather than formal language. This study aims to investigate the use of slang words by Generation Z on the widely used social media platform, TikTok. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with a sociolinguistic approach, this research adopts the theoretical framework of Allan and Burridge (2006), who categorize slang into five types: fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, acronym, and clipping. The findings of this study revealed 50 slang word entries used by Generation Z TikTok users in 2025. The analysis showed that the slang words fell into five categories: fresh and creative (23%), flippant (12%), imitative (18%), acronym (30%), and clipping (18%). Among these, acronyms were found to be the most frequently used slang type, with a proportion of 30%. This dominance is attributed to their practicality, brevity, and effectiveness in message delivery—characteristics that align with Generation Z's preference for fast, creative, and easily comprehensible modes of communication.

Abstract

This research explores how optimism is displayed in the movie Clouds (2020) by using Martin Seligman's optimism theory from Positive Psychology. The objectives of this study are (1) to evaluated of optimism reflected in the Clouds movie and (2) to indentify the impact on main character Zach. A qualitative method was used to study scenes and dialog from the movie. Data were taken from the movie and supported by books, journals, and related theories. The data were analyzed using Mile’s and Huberman’s (1994) model. The results showed 17 moments in the film that reflected three parts of optimism: permanence (8 data), personalization (5 data), and pervasiveness (4 data). Zach receives strong support from the people around him, especially his mother Laura, his best friend Sammy, and his girlfriend Amy. Their support helped him to stay strong, hopeful and confident in facing cancer. This finding is in line with Seligman's theory, which shows how positive thinking helps people to stay mentally strong during difficult times. The research also shows that the movie Clouds (2020) brings attention to important issues such as emotional support and mental health. It encourages people to think more about how movies can shape our understanding of optimism and well-being in everyday life.

Abstract

This study examines Bruce Wayne’s psychological dynamics in The Batman (2022) using Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, with a focus on the ego’s role in mediating trauma and moral conflict. This study analyzes how Wayne’s unresolved childhood trauma and dual identity as a vigilante reflect the interplay between the id, ego, and superego. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this study analyzes purposively selected scenes and dialogues from The Batman using close textual analysis. Audience reception data further support the interpretation of Wayne’s character as a psychologically complex figure. The findings reveal that Wayne’s ego adapts to internal and external pressures through ethical compromises, illustrating Freud’s theory of ego functioning. This study contributes to contemporary literary and film criticism by offering a psychoanalytic perspective on trauma and identity in modern superhero narratives.

Abstract

This paper examines Toni Morrison’s narrative strategies in her novel Sula, focusing on how she reconstructs and transmits the complex history of Black people to younger generations. Morrison’s literary works serve as a vehicle for preserving the legacy of Black history, often obscured or distorted. Employing both objective and expressive methodologies, this study analyzes the novel alongside relevant critical sources that explore Morrison’s narrative techniques and thematic intentions. The findings reveal that Morrison consistently employs distinctive narrative strategies in Sula, including a non-linear plot structure that juxtaposes past, present, and future; character development rooted in fragments of memory and historical detail; and the deliberate use of historical, geographical, and cultural settings. Moreover, Morrison integrates the Black community not only as a backdrop but as a vital thematic element and a collective character within the novel. This study underscores Morrison’s commitment to centering Black experiences and histories through innovative narrative forms.

Abstract

With a focus on SMA Negeri 16 Gowa and SMP Negeri 1 Parigi Gowa, this study investigates how digital literacy aids in pedagogical transformation in rural schools. In order to support pedagogical transformation in rural schools, the main goals were to investigate the digital literacy of teachers, the efficacy of training programs, the difficulties in implementing digital learning, and potential models and solutions. A purposive sample of twelve teachers was used in a qualitative case study design. Semi-structured interviews, document reviews, and classroom observations were used to gather data. Teachers' abilities, experiences, and reflections were recorded by the instruments, and thematic analysis was used to examine the data. The results showed that although teachers have rudimentary to intermediate digital skills, they still hardly ever use sophisticated tools for interactive instruction. Because programs were frequently short-term and not adapted to local needs, existing training increased awareness but did not result in meaningful changes. Teachers also mentioned issues like inadequate devices, poor internet access, inadequate infrastructure, and low student engagement. The results of document analysis and interviews suggested that context-sensitive, mentoring-based training models would work better than one-time workshops. Teachers also offered doable fixes, such as bettering the infrastructure, collaborating with the community, and focusing professional development more locally. By emphasizing the significance of contextualizing digital literacy in rural education, this study makes a theoretical contribution. In a practical sense, it provides direction for educators and legislators in creating efficient support and training programs. It demonstrates how improved digital proficiency can support more engaging and globally relevant English language instruction in rural Indonesian classrooms.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of alcoholism on the characters in Stephen Crane’s Maggie: A Little Girl of the Streets, set in the slums of 19th-century New York City. The novel portrays the struggles of its characters against poverty, violence, and alcoholism, highlighting the harsh realities of urban life. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method and an objective approach, this analysis focuses on the intrinsic elements of the novel, exploring how alcoholism influences the behaviour, relationships, and fates of characters such as Maggie, Jimmie, Mrs. Johnson, and Pete. Through detailed character analysis and examination of direct quotes from the text, the study reveals the profound effects of alcoholism on the characters' lives. Maggie, once depicted as innocent and hopeful, falls victim to exploitation and despair due to her family's alcoholism and societal pressures. Jimmie, shaped by a violent environment, transforms into a harsh and callous individual. Mrs. Johnson’s alcohol dependency leads to instability and violence within the family, while Pete, initially perceived as a potential saviour for Maggie, reveals himself as exploitative and opportunistic, contributing to her downfall. The study concludes that alcoholism acts as a catalyst for the characters' tragic fates, emphasizing the devastating consequences of their struggles against the backdrop of societal challenges. This analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of how societal and familial influences, particularly alcoholism, shape character development and lead to inevitable tragedy in Crane’s novel.

Abstract

This study explores the English communication needs of hotel receptionists in supporting the implementation of green tourism practices. Using a qualitative research approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis in three eco-certified hotels. The findings reveal that English communication is crucial not only for routine guest interactions but also for promoting environmental awareness and encouraging sustainable behavior among international visitors. Receptionists perform various communicative tasks, including explaining eco-friendly programs, persuading guest participation, and clarifying sustainability policies. However, they face challenges such as limited environmental vocabulary, cross-cultural communication barriers, and insufficient institutional training. Despite these limitations, receptionists employ adaptive strategies such as language simplification, visual aids, and contextualization to convey sustainability messages effectively. The study highlights the need for specialized English for Specific Purposes (ESP) programs that integrate environmental and intercultural communication skills. It concludes that empowering hotel receptionists with targeted language training enhances not only service quality but also the hotel’s capacity to promote sustainable tourism values. Thus, effective English communication serves as both a linguistic tool and a strategic means of fostering green tourism in the hospitality industry.
