The development of science and technology in agriculture, has been instrumental in increasing the production of various agricultural commodities. But climate change is also uncertain world led to decreased agricultural productivity. World energy crisis resulted in higher prices of agricultural commodities due to competition between food and energy are higher. Efforts to utilize biomass (agricultural products) has started a lot of research, not only as raw material for bioenergy, but also in an attempt to exploit agro-products into valuable economic products, and realize clean production in agro-industry.

Abstract

Kelopak bunga rosela merupakan sumber potensial senyawa phenolik. Untuk mendapatkan senyawa bioaktif tersebut digunakan metode ekstraksi berbantu gelombang mikro yaitu ekstraksi menggunakan alat microwave skala rumah tangga.  Response Surface Method digunakan untuk menentukan kondisi optimum variabel ekstraksi, yaitu daya gelombang mikro, konsentrasi etanol dan lama waktu ekstraksi.  Kondisi optimum proses ekstraksi yaitu pada daya gelombang mikro 250 Watt, konsentrasi etanol 78,36% dengan lama waktu 4,91 menit.  Hasil verifikasi penelitian total phenol yang diperoleh pada kondisi optimum adalah 23,77 + 0,25 mg/g, lebih rendah dari estimasi optimasi proses, yaitu 24,61 mg/g. Kandungan anthosianin, vitamin C dan rendemen MAE berturut turut 14,80 + 0,08;  10,74 + 0,14 mg/g dan 22,09 + 3,3%.  Aktivitas antioksidan ditunjukkan dengan zona hambat yang terbentuk 12,6 + 0,6 mm terhadap E. coli dan 11,6 + 0,3 mm terhadap S. aureus. Abstract

This study aimed to characterize the content of the leachate from lisimeter and assess the potential for leachate as liquid fertilizer. Leachate samples were taken from 5 lisimeter containing municipal waste in various sizes; A=(powder), B=(0.1 cm – 0.9 cm), C=(1.0 cm–1.9 cm), D=(2.0 cm – 2.9 cm), and E=(Original). Observation was conducted to leachate quality during bioconversion in 150 days. Result shows that at all treatment of degradation rates in leachate gives decreasing value of BOD, COD,NH4-N, TKN, and Phospate (P) except Kalium (K+) which increased during the bioconversion process. The value of TKN, Phospate, and Kalium (K+) is within safe limit to be dishcarged to the environment in the form of liquid fertilizer. Pollutant characteristics in leachate after anaerobic fermentation treatment in the form of heavy metals Hg, Cr, Cd. Pb, Zn, and Cu analyzed from all treatment shows values within safe limits to be discharged to environment in the form of liquid fertilizer. However, levels of BOD, COD and NH4-N are not yet qualified for discharge and require further treatment.Keywords: leachate, municipal waste, anaerobic fermentation, lysimeter

Abstract

Partial oxidation pretreatment on sorghum straw using a consortium of microorganisms EM4 was done before used as raw material for production of biogas. Biogas production was performed by co-digestion method using sludge of waste water treatment plant. This research aimed to study the effect of sorghum straw and sludge ratio to the production of biogas by co-digestion method. Partial hydrolysis pretreatment using concentrations of EM4 0.0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0%. Pretreatment parameter measured was chemical oxygen demand dissolved (COD). The result of sorghum straw pretreatment was used as raw material for biogas production. Co-digestion method of sorghum straw and sludge was carried out by ratio variation of 80:20, 75:25, 70:30, and 65:35 (w/w). Parameters measured were cumulative biogas production (L/kg VS) and the composition of the biogas (CH4 and CO2). Results of partial oxidation pretreatment showed that the higher concentration of EM4 affected in higher levels of dissolved COD. Biogas production results by this pretreatment showed that the higher concentrations of EM4, the shorter adaptation phase of anaerobic microorganisms and higher production of biogas. The highest biogas production by co-digestion method was 371 L/kgVS, achieved by ratio of sorghum straw to sludge of 75:25 (w/w) in 65 days of fermentation. By using co-digestion method, biogas production increased 245-293%. From the results of this research note that biogas production on a pilot scale 25 L was lower than Erlenmeyer digester 0.5 L.Composition of biogas consisted of CH4 : CO2 76:26 and biogas was flammable.Keywords: sorghum straw, EM4, sludge, co-digestion, biogas

Abstract

One of the issues in bioethanol production as fuel is the low productivity of fermentation process. Application of serial continuous bioreactor could increase the fermentation productivity. Series of bioreactor running in aerobic condition followed by anaerobic fermentation may resolve cell exhaustion and low substrate utilization problems, as pre-conditioned fresh cell cultured in aerobic bioreactor is fed continuously to fermentation tank. This research studied the productivity model of such configuration and its limitation in bioethanol production. The model developed was based on unstructured growth model applied on process mass balance on steady state. Model validation and verification were conducted in 2000 mL CSTR (Continuously Stirred Tank Reactor) type experimental bioreactor, utilizing Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC18824 in nutrient broth. Glucose 20% w/v was used as carbon source in feed stream. Process kinetics and product formation were observed by measuring biomass using spectrophotometry, glucose by DNS method and ethanol produced by HPLC. The results show that model could be developed by deriving mass balance for the system, with adjustment where μ is following modified Monod equation. The model accuracy was 82.43 ± 1.58% in term of ethanol productivity. Productivity of ethanol was observed as a function of cell concentration in aerobic bioreactor (X1) and dilution rate at anaerobic bioreactor (D2) and its interaction was observed through the central composite design. Highest productivity of 19.01g/L.h was observed at optimized value ofX1 22g/l and D20.30 h-1 with the yield of YP/Stotal of 0.36 g ethanol/ g sugar, while fermentative yield was 0.45 g ethanol/ g sugar.The value wa higher than productivity in batch fermentation at the same working volume of bioreactor (1.01g/L.h). Overall substrate conversion on highest productivity was 87.65%, where 61.08% substrate converted into bioethanol.Keywords: bioethanol,continuous bioreactor, productivity model

Abstract

In this study, the oil palm fresh fruit bunch (FFB) was harvested and its images were recorded in a photographic studio. The bunch was recorded from various distances (2, 7, 10, 15m) using five lighting configuration, i.e. ultraviolet lamp (600 watts), visible lamp (600 and 1000 watt), as well as IR lamp (600 and 1000 watts). The FFB images were processed in order to obtain 15 colour components making up the image, consist of three primary colours (R, G, B) and their transformations (H, S, I, RI, GI, BI, RG, RB, GB, GR, BR, BG). The prediction model of FFB’s oil content was built to evaluate the amount of oil on FFB accurately based on its image. The model was built using deep neural networks, where the colour components served as inputs, and 10 hiden layers were introduced to describe the relationship between all these variables and oil content. Of various recording setup, only four were selected based on their coefficient of correlation, namely: 10m_UV (R2 = 1); 10m_Vis2 (R2 = 1); 10m_IR2 (R2 = 1); and 2m_IR2 (R2 = 0.981). The determinant colour of the FFB’s image which mostly influence the prediction models were the ratio of R to B (RB) for 10m_UV; the value of H and S on 10m_Vis2; the I and S of the 10m_IR2; and RB, H, and B for the 2m_IR2 treatment.Keywords: deep neural network, FFB, nondestructive, oil content, photogrammetry

Abstract

Processing palm oil fruit into crude palm oil (CPO) produces liquid waste (palm oil mill effluent = POME) in large quantities. Besides potential as an environmental pollutant, POME also has a potential as a source of microbial fibers. The objectives of this study wereto determine the formulation of the addition of coconut water into POME in the production of microbial fiber (nata) and to determine the right timing for inoculation of Acetobacter xylinum in the production of microbial fiber (nata). The first factor was the time of keeping the POME, with a level of 7 days, 14 days, and 21 days. The second factor was the addition of coconut water with a level of 0%, 10%; 20%; 30%; and 40% of the total POME. The results of the study were the addition of coconut water into POME to a concentration of 40% was able to increase the thickness and fiber yield of microbial (nata), Acetobacter xylinum was able to grow on media of 100% POME, and keeping the POME up to 21 days could decrease the thickness and yield of wet microbial fibers (nata), but increase the microbial yield of dry fiber (nata) generated.Keywords: CPO, microbial fibers, nata, POME

Abstract

Sifat mekanis selulosa yang cukup tinggi memungkinkan selulosa digunakan sebagai penguat dalam komposit polipropilena. Dalam penelitian ini, selulosa diekstrak dari pelepah sawit dan ampas akar wangi melalui proses pulping dan pemucatan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui karakteristik selulosa dari pulp soda dan pulp pucat pelepah sawit dan ampas akar wangi berdasarkan alomorf, kristalinitas dan ukuran kristalitnya. Komposit polipropilena dibuat dengan cara mencampur pulp (10%), polipropilena (PP) dan maleic anhydride polypropylene (MAPP) menggunakan rheomix pada suhu 180°C, 60 rpm selama 25 menit. Campuran serat/PP/MAPP dikempa panas pada suhu 190°C, 1,5 MPa selama 2 menit. Sifat mekanis komposit diuji menggunakan universal testing machine (UTM). Pengaruh jenis pulp (pulp soda dan pulp pucat) dan bentuk pulp (pulp terurai dan pulp padat) terhadap sifat mekanis komposit diuji keragamannya dengan analisa statistik faktorial dalam rancangan acak lengkap. Sifat mekanis komposit PP/OPF lebih tinggi dibandingkan komposit PP/dVR. Keteguhan lentur komposit PP/OPF dipengaruhi oleh bentuk pulp, sedangkan keteguhan tarik komposit PP/OPF dipengaruhi oleh jenis pulp. Keteguhan lentur, modulus elastisitas lentur, keteguhan tarik dan modulus elastisitas tarik komposit PP/pulp-padat-pucat OPF berturut-turut 22.95%, 28.95%, 9.28% dan 56.53% lebih tinggi dibandingkan polipropilena tanpa pulp.Kata kunci: ampas akarwangi, komposit, pelepah sawit, polipropilena, selulosa

Abstract

Sugar Factory Krebet Baru II Malangwas facing increased down time up to 66.64% from the previous production period with the highest down time at milling station. A machine effectiveness measurement was used to valuate machine performance. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the performance of machines in the milling station using OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) and to find factors that most influence the OEE value with six big losses method. OEE was gained by multiplying the value of availability, performance rate and quality rate. The results of the research showed that OEE value of each machine were between 70.52-78.81%. The OEE values didnot reach the ideal value, which was 85%.The factor that most influenceof OEE value was reduced speed loss factor with value from 49.67% to 63.50%.Keywords: machine performance measurement, milling station, OEE, six big losses
