Abstract

This study investigated the antioxidant activity of swallow nests known as Edible Bird Nests (EBNs) derived from the swallow species Collocalia linchi, especially those sourced from Lombok, Indonesia with various health benefits, including their potential as antioxidants. This study used swallow nest samples taken from 3 different locations, namely: East Lombok, Central Lombok and West Lombok. The extraction method used is heating and sonication. Antioxidant activity was assessed quantitatively using the DPPH method and measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Results showed varying IC50 values across different extraction times, with the highest values recorded at 3818.47 mg/mL and the lowest at 2331.47 mg/mL, compared to the control (ascorbic acid) at 35.22 mg/mL. The higher the IC50 value, the lower the effectiveness of antioxidants and vice versa. These findings suggest that the antioxidant activity of EBNs extracts is relatively weak when compared to ascorbic acid. This study contributes to the understanding of optimized extraction techniques by heating and sonication to unlock the full potential of the extraction results of bioactive compounds.

Abstract

In the era of 21st century skills, the literacy scores of Indonesian students according to the results of the PISA study (2022) are still relatively low. The existence of learning loss after the covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on reducing learning outcomes and students' chemical literacy skills on redox material. This research aims to produce LAPD oriented to project based learning to improve chemical literacy skills on redox material. The method used is Research and Development (R&D) with a 4D model (define, design, develop, disseminate), but is limited to the develop stage. In this research, a limited trial was conducted on 29 students in 11th Grde Science 2 class, at a private school in Mojokerto, who had received redox material. Data analysis was carried out descriptively quantitatively. The validity (content and construct) of LAPD is valid, obtaining a mode of 4 with a good category. The practicality of LAPD is practical, the results of the student response questionnaire obtained a percentage of 96.78% with a very good category. The effectiveness of LAPD iseffective, the n-gain of the chemical literacy test with a high category of 93.10% and a medium category of 6.90%; and the results of the paired sample t-test obtained a Sig.2-tailed value of 0.000 < 0.05 so that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that LAPD oriented to project based learning to improve chemical literacy skills on redox material, worthy of use

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) type 2 is a chronic disease characterized by increased glucose levels in the body due to insulin resistance or inadequate insulin production. This study aims to determine the antidiabetic potential of keji beling ( Strobhilantes crispa) leaf extract. This research is different from other studies which used Alloxan as a diabetes inducer. In this study, Streptozotocin was used as a DM inducer. After treatment, information was obtained that keji beling (S. crispa) extract could reduce blood glucose levels in type 2 DM rats. Experimental research used 30 male Wistar rats divided into six groups consisting of normal group, negative control (HFD and Streptozotocin), positive control (Glibenclamide), dose group I (150 mg/kg BW), dose II (300 mg/ kg BW), and dose III (450 mg/kg BW). Based on the research results, it is known that S.crispa leaf extract can reduce blood glucose levels in mice induced by Streptozotocin and has the potential to act as an antihyperglycemic in type 2 DM.

Abstract

Kapurung is a traditional food from South Sulawesi, especially from Tanah Luwu/Luwu Raya. This food is made from sago (Metroxylon sago) as the basic ingredient which is processed together with various vegetables and meat or fish. The concept of ethnochemistry is used to examine the process of making kapurung through analyzing the natural ingredients used and the chemical changes that occur during processing. The way kapurung is made reflects the local knowledge of the community in managing existing natural resources. The research was conducted to reveal the chemical aspects and fundamental chemical activities contained in the process of making kapurung. This research uses descriptive qualitative research with ethnographic methods, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis in this study used source triangulation which was carried out inductively, so that in this study key informants, main informants and supporting informants were determined on each aspect that became the object of research. The results showed that the fundamental chemical activities contained in the kapurung making process are the gelatinization of starch in sago, protein denaturation, fiber degradation and the dissolution of nutrients in vegetables, the Maillard reaction in fried/roasted fish/chicken, and the use of food additives in the kapurung making process.

Abstract

The red fruit (Pandanus conoideus) is an endemic plant from Papua, known for its distinctive color and shape. This fruit is recognized for its bioactive properties, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antihyperglycemic effects. Its high pigment content is believed to have potential as a sensitizer in DSSC applications. However, research on this topic remains underexplored. Therefore, the aim of this preliminary study is to investigate the potential of red fruit pigments for DSSC. The characterization of red fruit pigments was conducted through phytochemical screening, FTIR and UV-Vis spectral analysis, as well as literature reviews. Pigment extraction was carried out using maceration without involving drying or grinding processes. Phytochemical screening results revealed that the macerate contains flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolics and terpenoids, compounds commonly used as natural pigments in DSSCs. FTIR analysis showed the presence of functional groups such as carboxyl (-COOH), carbonyl (C=O), and hydroxyl (-OH), which can act as effective anchoring groups when interacting with nanosemiconductor surfaces. Meanwhile, UV-Vis analysis showed absorption peaks in the UV region (wavelength 204–399 nm) and the visible region (wavelength 400–550 nm). Based on literature studies and research findings, it can be concluded that the pigments in red fruit have potential applications as DSSC sensitizers.

Abstract

Social cognitive theory developed by Albert Bandura is the most influential approach to learning. This theory emphasizes that a person's behavior can be learned through observation of social models in the surrounding environment, be it teachers, parents, or peers. This theory is known as observational learning or modeling. This research aims to explore the process of observational learning in an effort to strengthen the value of the Nggahi Rawi Pahu philosophy. The research method used is descriptive qualitative.  The sample in this study were fourth semester students of the Chemistry Education Study Program. Data collection techniques were carried out by means of observation, administration of questionnaires and documentation. In this study, observational learning was carried out through 4 stages of cognition in the learning process, namely attention, retention, motor reproduction and motivation. 7 out of 10 students showed a positive response to the relevance, involvement and benefits of observational learning in an effort to strengthen the philosophy of Nggahi Rawi Pahu. This shows that through observational learning the value of the Nggahi Rawi Pahu philosophy can be improved.
