Abstract

The synthesis of methyl ester nitrate (MEN) from ketapang oil (Terminalia catappa L.) have been carried out. This study aims to determine the yield and the characteristics of MEN. In this study, ketapang seed oil was obtained from the soxhlet extraction process followed by an evaporation process to separate the oil from the solvent. MEN can be produced from ketapang seed oil by esterification to convert all of FFA became ester, followed by transesterification that intended to produce ester from triglycerides and nitrationthat is reaction of esther and HNO3 to create MEN. Evaporated oil is esterified using methanol with a mole ratio of oil: methanol (1: 6), then the transesterification process using methanol with a mole ratio (1:15) gives a yield of 86%. The transesterification product was then nitrated using HNO3 and H2SO4 for 4 hours with a yield of 83%. Characterization of methyl ester using GC-MS characterization showed the presence of methyl palmitoleate (C17H32O2), methyl palmitate (C19H34O2), methyl oleate (C19H36O2), methyl 13-octadecanoic (C19H36O2), methyl stearate (C19H38O2), and methyl 18-nonadecanoic (C21H42O2). Characterization MEN using a FTIR spectrophotometer showed the presence of a C-ONO2 group at wave number 1550 cm-1, NO2 group at wave number 1365 cm-1 and a C-N group at wave number 1118 cm-1. It shows that MEN can be synthesized from ketapang seed oil.

Abstract

Mercury is one of the heavy metals that has high toxicity, not only for the environment but also for human health. Mercury is found in many cosmetic products; unfortunately, for people who do not understand the dangers of mercury cosmetic ingredients, their skin will become red rashes. The novelty of this article is to use colorimetric sensor for mercury combined with Digital Image Colorimetry (DIC). The image is captured with the the smartphone camera and quantified using the Euclidean Distance (ED) Equation approach. In addition, the synthesized AgNPs also use the green synthesis method with natural materials as reducing agents and stabilizers. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the best synthesis conditions and determine the detection performance of mercury (II) ions. The research began with the synthesis of mercury detection substances, namely silver nanoparticles reduced and stabilized by Moringa oleifera leaf extract (AgNPs-MO). In this study, it was found that silver nanoparticles began to form at 1 hour accompanied by heating at 120°C using a hotplate, while 6 hours when without heating. The optimum pH condition is 10. This mercury detection method has good sensitivity and accuracy values, with RSD values of less than 1% for each analyte in 5 repetitions.

Abstract

The development of environmentally friendly materials such as bioplastics is a solution to reduce the negative impact of conventional plastics on the environment. This study presents a novel approach by utilizing hemicellulose extracted from rice straw and husks—abundant agricultural waste materials—as the main raw materials for bioplastic production. Hemicellulose was extracted using the alkalization method, and its characterization was carried out through FTIR analysis to identify typical polysaccharide functional groups. The results of the analysis showed the presence of O-H, C-H, and C-O-C groups, which indicate the glycosidic structure of hemicellulose, as well as indications of residual lignin with C=C groups. The resulting hemicellulose was then processed into bioplastics with the addition of plasticizers and reinforcing materials, incorporating glycerin, CMC, and TiO₂ to enhance mechanical properties and biodegradability. Mechanical and degradation tests demonstrated superior performance, highlighting the synergy between these additives. This study provides an innovative strategy for transforming agricultural waste into high-value bioplastics, contributing to sustainability and advancing green material technology.

Abstract

The need for particle board interiors is still in great demand to be used as wood-sourced interiors. In line with this, currently the problem of waste is still a fairly complex problem, both organic and inorganic waste. Coffee rinds and tofu pulp are organic wastes that have not been optimally utilized. Therefore, research was conducted on the manufacture of particleboard from coffee rinds and tofu pulp with PP plastic adhesive which aims to reduce the rate of deforestation due to tree felling as raw material for interior manufacturing and to control the environment by utilizing waste in the community into functional products. This study aims to determine the best formulation of particleboard made from Polyethylene plastic, coffee bean hulls and tofu pulp. Tofu dregs need to be preserved by soaking the dregs for 48 hours in a 5% glycerol solution and 15% NaCl solution in a 50:50 ratio. Then soaked for 48 hours. soaking 15.121%. To determine a good particleboard formulation, a physical evaluation of the particleboard was carried out including particleboard density test, water absorption test, moisture content test, thickness development test and instrumentation testing using SEM to see the surface structure of the particleboard.  Based on the results of physical testing, the best formulation of particleboard biocomposites was obtained, namely the ratio of 70:30 (% w/b) (70% of tofu pulp and coffee bean skin and 30% of PET plastic) which is in accordance with SNI 03-2105-2006 standards. Biocomposite particleboard formulation 70:30 (% w/b) has a density of 0.60186 gr/cm3, water absorption of 95.395%, moisture content of 2.248% and an increase in thickness after soaking of 15.121%.
