Abstract

This study aimed to examine 21st-century character education for Indonesian children through Sports Science which was implemented in the form of integration of physical education and character education in early childhood, especially through sports activities such as; pencak silat (martial arts), dance, outbound, and swimming. This study used a literature research method by adapting a literature study research model proposed by Mirshad (2014) which was carried out through four research steps, namely; 1) recording of all findings 2) integration of all findings 3) analysis of all findings, 4) criticism and collaboration. The instrument used was a data card where data were recorded by paraphrasing, quoting, and synoptic. Document Analysis was used for data analysis that focused more on analyzing factual content and media features. This study found several characters that appeared in four activities, namely; 1) pencak silat (martial arts) could increase the character values of piety, not giving up easily, responsibility, discipline, and self-confidence; 2) the art of dance fostered the character of honesty, cooperation, independence, self-confidence, piety, and discipline; and 3) outbound created the character of leadership, cooperation, and self-confidence; 4) swimming could increase the character values of courage, self-confidence, creativity, adaptation, and sensitivity. This character could grow and develop from each activity created in the four activities. It was recommended for parents to provide opportunities for their children to participate in sports activities such as; pencak silat (martial arts), dance, outbound, and swimming because these activities had been proven to increase positive character, where these activities were an integration of physical education as an academic discipline based on sports science.

Abstract

From March 2020 up to the present (February 2022), elementary and high schools in the Philippines have not resumed their full classroom capacity. The majority of learners are still learning from home without assurance of when they are going back to the schools. In order to augment the department’s blended program, the EdTech Unit of Information Communication Technology Services (ICTS) of the Department of Education (DepEd Philippines) has launched an online tutoring program using Facebook and YouTube to reach a larger number of learners all over the country. The program was conceived in January 2021 and has served more than two million learners in the Philippines. Using qualitative content analysis from the responses of the participants, this paper aimed at knowing the experiences of parents, this paper presents the experiences of participants in the program during the first year of its implementation. Upon the first year of its implementation, the participants were generally enthralled and positive for the initiative as it helped them ease with explaining some context that parents may not have the grasp of the information. Parents also were given springboard to talk about topics which are rather difficult to discuss with their children. Participants also highlighted that ETULay served its purpose well but hoped to be more inclusive and graphics-enhanced in the next years to come.

Data collection techniques using observation, interviews, and documents. Data analysis techniques consist of 1) data collection, 2) data Reduction, 3) data display, and 4) conclusion. The validity of the data were credibility, transferability, dependability, and objectivity (confirmability). The finding shows that there were two main strategy which implemented in limited face-to-face learning policy in the school. It used to make the concepts of communication, the readiness of human resources, and the development of cooperative attitudes. The strategies were standard operational procedures and fragmentation. School made the rule for limited learning process. Standard Operational Procedures that are used as internal school demands to implement policies uniformly in junior high schools. Fragmentation is designed as a form of division of responsibility for implementing limited face-to-face learning policies. It is carried out by taking into account the nature of the policy to be implemented, and the distribution of responsibilities to all policy implementers. The strategy provided the concept of face-to-face learning is limited to meeting the needs of children's growth and development towards educational needs so learning activities must refer to the principles of health, safety, and children's rights.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of gratitude journaling in increasing students’ academic resilience. This quasi-experimental study used a non-randomized pretest-posttest with a control group design. The subjects were 16 students divided into two groups, 8 students in the experimental group and 8 students in the control group. The data collection instrument was questionnaires containing an academic resilience scale and a gratitude questionnaire. Then the data were analyzed using non-parametric statistical analysis with the Mann Whitney U Test and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant difference between the experimental group that received the gratitude journaling treatment and the control group without receiving the gratitude journaling treatment (p = 0.035). Then, there is a significant difference in the level of academic resilience of the experimental group between before and after the treatment in the form of gratitude journaling (p = 0.017). Besides, the effect size score is 52.5%. This shows that gratitude journaling increases the student’s academic resilience with a moderate category. This research can fill in the gap in the study of gratitude and academic resilience based on experiments in Indonesia that have never existed before.
