Abstract

Since the beginning of its application, the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) has been recognized for its success in improving the quality of learning in various disciplines from different countries. Then, it has been recommended to be applied in all levels of education, especially in higher education. Therefore, this review is aimed at exploring the most influential principles of PBL which give contribution to the success of the learning outcome in English language learning. This review was compiled based on the guideline from PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis). Data was searched and collected from studies published from electronic data bases of reputable international journals issued from 2012 to 2020. From 105 articles in the same area of English language learning, 7 articles were chosen to match the purpose of this review. The 7 articles have the same research methodology (experimental study), in which the discussions of the articles are analyzed to find the most influential principles supporting the success of PBL for all level of education in English language learning. It was found that PBL has proven to be effective in English language learning for all levels of education. In addition, the review shows that all discussions of the articles state that there are five most influential principles of the PBL that give contribution to the success of the language learning,  the incorporation of  ill structured/real life problems, a student-centered approach,  collaborative learning, problem solving, and critical thinking.

Abstract

This study aims to examine gender representation in directive speech acts of Indonesian language teachers in Pasaman Regency Automotive Department Vocational Schools. Included in the type of qualitative research, this research applies descriptive analysis method. The research data is in the form of directive speech of male teachers and female teachers in Indonesian language learning at SMK Department of Automotive Pasaman Regency. It can be concluded that Indonesian teachers use various forms of directive speech acts, such as directions, orders, and instructions to students. Variants of the use of directive speech acts also show variations between male and female teachers, with three dominant variants commonly used by male teachers and five variants commonly used by female teachers. The results also reveal that female teachers tend to use the speech act of ordering or commanding as the dominant form, although they also show a sense of solidarity by using the speech acts of suggesting and advising. On the other hand, male teachers are more inclined to the direct approach and commanding without preamble. This difference reflects the complexity of the relationship between men's and women's language and thinking in the learning context.

Abstract

The integration of the SRL strategy into instructional practices is motivated by the desire to nurture students' autonomy in learning, a trait that is increasingly emphasized in contemporary educational discourse. This study investigates the integration of the Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategy into the instructional framework of an Interpretive Reading course. Given the emphasis on fostering students' learning independence inherent in the SRL strategy, it becomes crucial to ensure that instructional practices align with this objective, particularly within the context of a course designed for first-semester university students. The study adopts a case study approach within an Interpretive Reading class at a private university in Indonesia. Here, the focus is on evaluating the instructional strategies vis-à-vis the criteria delineated in each phase of the SRL strategy: Forethought and Planning, Monitoring of Performance, and Reflection on Performance. The findings reveal that the instructional interventions implemented by the lecturer predominantly meet the criteria established for each phase of the SRL strategy. These instructions serve as scaffolding mechanisms, guiding students towards developing their autonomy in learning processes. Furthermore, the study underscores the effectiveness of these instructions in enhancing students' interpretive reading skills. Consequently, the outcomes of this study hold implications for the integration of digital texts within the instructional context, suggesting their potential to further support and enhance student learning experiences in Interpretive Reading classrooms.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has come under intense scrutiny for its actions in the agrarian conflict in Rempang Island, Batam City, Riau Islands Province. The conflict was triggered by the government's forced relocation of the Rempang Island community in the context of the Rempang Eco City development funded by a foreign investor, Xinyi Group. The incident captured the attention of the public and the media due to the large scale of the case. This research aims to see how the Indonesian government is represented in the Indonesian news media regarding the discourse of the Rempang Island case. This research uses the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis initiated by Fairclough (1995) and Transitivity by Halliday (2014). The method used in this research is content analysis method to elaborate the image constructed by the media against the Indonesian government. The data in the study amounted to six data taken from Tempo.co media, and Batamnow.com which were analyzed through three stages, namely textual, discourse practices, and socio-cultural practices. The results showed that the Indonesian government was represented negatively by labeling it as the party that violated human rights and the perpetrator of crimes against humanity.

Abstract

The connection between language and culture becomes increasingly evident when the Thai language influences the variations of Jawi Malay dialects in Narathiwat. This research aims to analyze the impact of Thai language interference on the dialectal variations of Malay language in Narathiwat, Thailand, using a sociolinguistic approach. We investigate changes in language, including vocabulary usage, phonological shifts, and social influences in the everyday situations of Narathiwat society. The research methods involve interviews, surveys, text analysis, and observations in everyday contexts. The expected outcomes are to enhance understanding of language dynamics in Narathiwat, which plays a crucial role in preserving cultural and linguistic identities in a multilingual environment. This study has the potential to provide valuable insights into the preservation and maintenance of Malay language in Narathiwat, emphasizing the importance of language and sociolinguistic research in areas with strong language influences and significant cultural blends. This abstract covers the research background, objectives, research methods, research findings, discussion, conclusion, and research implications, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the scope and relevance of this study

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low interest in reading that students have. The low interest in reading makes the lack of vocabulary mastery. The purpose of this study is to explain the contribution of environmental vocabulary mastery and reading interest to students' expository text writing skills. This type of research is quantitative research. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The research data were obtained from the final test results of exposition text writing skills of class X students of SMK Negeri 1 Bandar Sungai Kijang, Pelalawan Regency, Riau. Instruments to collect vocabulary mastery data using objective tests, reading interest using questionnaire techniques / research instruments, while to collect data on exposition text writing skills using written tests. The technique of analyzing data used in this research is descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that there was a significant contribution between the mastery of vocabulary in the environmental field to the skill of writing exposition texts of Class XI students of SMK Negeri 1 Bandar Sungai Kijang Regency Pelalawan Riau. This means that the better the mastery of vocabulary in the environmental field of students, the better the degree of writing skills of the student's exposition text. Then there is a significant contribution between reading interest and exposition text writing skills of Class XI students of SMK Negeri 1 Bandar Sungai Kijang Regency Pelalawan Riau. This means that the better the student's interest in reading, the higher the degree of skill in writing the student's expository text. Finally, there is a simultaneous contribution between the mastery of vocabulary in the environmental field and reading interest to the exposition text writing skills of Grade XI students of SMK Negeri 1 Bandar Sungai Kijang Regency Pelalawan Riau.

Abstract

Despite grammar receiving greater emphasis than other language skills in Iranian schools, Iranian EFL students encounter challenges in acquiring the linguistic structures they are exposed to, resulting in insufficient grammar knowledge. This experiment looked into the effects of spaced versus massed instruction on learning modal auxiliaries among Iranian EFL learners with a lower-intermediate command of English. To this end, through an Oxford Quick Placement Tests (OQPT), 78 lower-intermediate learners were selected and assigned in three conditions, with 26 subjects in each: Spaced condition, Massed condition, Control condition. Using a Levene’s test, it was shown that the subjects were homogenous prior to the experiment. Then, a pretest was used. The results of the pretest showed that there was no between groups’ difference prior to the treatment. Afterward, the spaced group received three 30-minute sessions on modal auxiliaries based on Fundamentals of English Grammar by Azar (2016), while the massed condition received the instruction in just a single 90-minute session. The subjects in all conditions were then posttested. The results of a one-way between groups analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that both treatment groups outperformed the comparison group (p < .05) with a large effect size (eta squared = .63). The results of post-hoc analyzes using Bonferroni adjustment further revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between the two experimental conditions (p < .05). That is, the spaced subjects gained more compared to their massed counterparts with regard to the targeted L2 form. Pedagogically, this study suggests ESL/EFL instructors could integrate spaced instruction strategies for enhancing students' proficiency in modals. Material developers may also leverage these findings to create more engaging and effective instructional materials.

Abstract

Arabic writing skills at the higher education level were still experiencing stagnation, which required efforts to improve learning. This research was presented as an exploration of overcoming this problem. This research aimed to describe the application of the Translate Self-Review (TSR) method based on the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach in arabic writing learning in higher education along with students' perceptions of this learning. This research used qualitative-descriptive method, and data was collected through questionnaire, observations, and documentation, then it was analyzed using Miles and Huberman analysis techniques. This research results highlighted that although there was a positive response from students towards the use of this method in creating an enjoyable learning experience and facilitating cross-cultural relationships, there was still a gap between theory and practice, indicating obstacles in improving Arabic writing skills in elementary-level inclusive classes. This research underlined the importance of adapting learning methods that were more appropriate to students' level of understanding and extending them to higher levels of education to obtain a more holistic picture. The TSR method based CRT approach offered potential in creating an inclusive learning environment, but needed modification to effectively meet the needs of diverse learners and improve Arabic writing skills at the higher education level.

Abstract

Pronunciation is the most important thing that non-native speakers must deal with when learning a foreign language. The purpose of this research is to improve students’ English pronunciation by using TikTok media. The research method was classroom action research with tests at the end of each cycle. It was conducted in grades IV at Sanggar Bimbingan Sentul, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, for the 2022 academic year. This classroom action research consisted of two cycles with four stages that were planning, action, observation, and reflection. The learning media used was video taken from the TikTok account @learnenglishwithcamille. The results showed that students’ English pronunciation increased after using TikTok media. This can be seen from the results of observations at cycle 1 reached 45% in the “enough” category, 55% reached the “good” category, and increased at cycle 2 to 40% students in the category “very good”, 45% in the category “good”, and 15% in the category “enough”. In conclusion, TikTok media can improve students’ English, especially in terms of English pronunciation. The implication of the study is that students enjoy learning pronunciation with TikTok media and well improved.

Abstract

English was regarded as a foreign language in Indonesia and holds significant importance in various domains, including education, economy, international relations, and technology. Consequently, the Indonesian government has designated English as the primary foreign language, mandatory for learning in both schools and universities. Thus, English has incorporated into the curriculum from elementary level up to university. This research aimed to determine if there is a significant difference in the reading abilities of students taught using the Hellotalk application compared to those taught through conventional methods.in this school most of students still  low to read the English text so the Reseacher interesting to give new method for them. The method used Quantitative research, with an experimental method and quasi-experimental design. The target population consisted of seventh-grade students. Purposive sampling was utilized to select a sample of 25 students for the experimental group and 25 students for the control group. Data collection involved the use of a multiple-choice test, which was subsequently analyzed using the independent t-test in SPSS 25. The research findings revealed a significant distinction between the experimental group and the control group. This meant that Hellotalk Application was suitable to use in teaching reading on narrative texts at the seventh grade.
