Abstract

This research is qualitative descriptive research with the subject are the fourth and sixth semesters of the English Department at the Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo (UMPO). Semesters four and six each consist of 16 students. So the total number of respondents was 32 students. The data collections were questionnaires, observation, and interviews to find out student's perception of E-learning use, E-learning element, and the impact of students in E-learning use. The results of the study show that according to students' perception E-learning is effectively carried out in lectures because with E-learning, students can access lecture material wherever and whenever. Besides, by using E-learning, the learning resources and learning activities of students are also diverse because E-learning is equipped with attractive features. One of the E-learning platforms used by English Department lecturers at Muhammadiyah University in Ponorogo (UMPO) is Bebas UMPO (MOODLE), Google Classroom, Edmodo, and Whatsapp. There are some standard features from applications/platforms that used by lecturer: Features from Bebas UMPO are "Forums", "Quizzes", "SCORM packages", "Resources", and "Assignments"; feature from Google classroom is "Classwork"; part from Edmodo are "Chatting," and "Quiz" and feature from Whatsapp is "Group chat". Abstract

WCF from the lecturer is useful information for student writing improvement. It aids students in identifying their English learning problems and skills. Students, on the other hand, may interpret lecturer WCF differently than the lecturer intended. This study is aimed at describing the type of lecturer’s WCF and the students’ perception of lecturer’s WCF in a paragraph writing class. It is descriptive qualitative research, employing documentation and interview as research instruments, which was conducted with 18 students of the third semester English department students of Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Furthermore, there were five out of 18 students randomly selected to be interviewed to discover students’ perspective of the given feedback. The findings revealed that, firstly, the lecturer use praise, criticism, and suggestion based on students task in paragraph writing class. Secondly, students’ positive responses of having feedback and the benefit of written corrective feedback that students get. Finally, most students responded that they appreciated the lecturer’s WCF. In addition, the students believed that lecturer’s WCF could improve student’s writing especially on grammar accuracy and organization, and it could motivate the student in developing the ideas. Keywords:  Student’s Perspective, Written Corrective Feedback, Writing

Abstract

Metacognitive awareness is a cognitive evaluation of students' impressions of themselves during listening activities in the form of their comprehension, goals, and strategies to enhance listening abilities. The purpose of this study was to discover what metacognitive awareness strategies students frequently use in their listening performances. The subject in this study was the students of the 4th semester of English Department, Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo, who took the Listening for authentic materials course. The study used quantitative correlational research design with the data collected from questionnaire which adopted and elaborated from Vandergrift et al. The respondent who filled out the questionnaire was 10 of the 15 existing students. The results showed that students’ metacognitive awareness in listening strategies were classified into: problem solving (4.67), directed attention (4.13), planning / evaluation (4.10), mental translation (4.03), and person knowledge (3.60). It indicated that most English Department students used problem solving as their listening strategy. It also showed that students frequently use their understanding about the context rather than translating word for word in their heads; comparing the impact of their listening efforts; sustaining concentration and remaining focused on listening. Keywords:  Metacognitive Awareness, Listening Strategy, Metacognition, EFL

Abstract

This purpose of this thesis is describing the effect of the implementation of creative writing on ELT (English Language Teaching) to inspiring the students’ writing activities in Eleventh Grade of MAN 2 Ponorogo in Academic Year 2017/2018.The subject of this research is the student of Eleventh Grade of MAN 2 Ponorogo. This research provide classroom action research  method which doing the observations about the students’ writing learning activities before and after the research and monitoring the development of the students’ tasks by guiding them in creative writing. The researcher also makes the interview with the students’ experienced when they’re conducting writing activities.  The data comes from students’ interviews and observation conducts to students’ writing paper, which one that they are finding problems in finding ideas than the other students within their understanding to find the ideas. This study will show you how creative writing will improve the students’ ideas and also provide their abilities to stay in their way of writing; they can also find their style in writing. Creative writing also produce their energy in order to find new discovery in the topic they had been chosen. It also guide them to be discipline, confident, imaginative, be a planner, because they will make their deadline a project of writing, they also try to be a pioneer, not a plagiarism. The researcher suggestion about this research were the student should  read intensively to increase their vocabularies, doing the example of the task for more understanding about the lesson, and the last the teacher should apply the various the teaching method to motivate the student in learning English.

Abstract

Writing is an important language skill because it becomes a means of learning, discovering, developing, and perfecting language skills. The researcher using Problem-Based Learning method to enhance students’ writing ability. This research aims to develop the students’ intelligence by learning to solve problems and shapes students’ interaction with the new environment that confronts students to real world problems to begin learning so that the students become critical thinkers. The researcher used a classroom action research design. The subject was the English department students at Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo in the academic year 2019/2020. The class consists of 16 students. Before implementing, the researcher made a lesson plan, the steps of Problem-Based Learning method, and prepared instruments, questionnaires, observations, field notes, and test will be conducted in the last meeting. The research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings. Based on the result of the observation it showed that the students were more active than the previous meeting, the percentage was 52% in cycle one and 84% in cycle two. The result of the questionnaire score was 84% in cycle one and 96% in cycle two it means the students were more enjoyed, gave a positive response and looked more fun with the implementation of this method. The result of the writing test in cycle one is that 13 students or 81% who got score ≥ B- (2.5), in cycle two was 100% or all students got score ≥ B- (2.5). The result of writing test in cycle two, it showed improvement. The research finding proves that Problem-Based Learning method was successfully improve writing ability. Hopefully, this research can be a reference for the lecturer of writing course to teach and learn writing and for the next researcher for conducting the next research.

Abstract

2013 Curriculum considered as new curriculum in Indonesia. In this curriculum, students demanded to be active and creative during learning process. Thus, teacher also needs to be creative in arranging the teaching and learning process. This research aims at finding out (1) the teachers’ implementation of 2012 curriculum in English teaching process; (2) the teachers’ and students roles in English teaching and learning; and (3) the impact of 2013 curriculum in English teaching and learning. This research design was descriptive qualitative research. The researcher used qualitative observation and interview as the data collection technique. The subject were three English teachers of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo. The activity in analyzing data were reduction, display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The findings of the research showed that the implementation of 2013 curriculum in English teaching process did not completely successful. It showed from the data findings, there were positive and negative impact of the 2013 curriculum implementation in English teaching process at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo. The creativity of English teacher in arranging learning activities will create a good learning situation and increase the students understanding towards the learning material.

Abstract

This research was carried out to measure whether using basic questioning with picture is effective in teaching writing. The research design used in this reasearch was experimental research which consisted of two groups, experimental and control group. The sample of this research were X IPA1 as the experimental group which consisted of 32 students and X IPA2 as the control group which consisted of 30 students. The experimental group was taught by using basic questioning with picture while the control group was not taught by using basic questioning with picture, it was taught as usual or lecturing only. The instrument used to collect data was test. The test was writing test which was given in pre test and post test both two groups. The assessment of the result of writing test was focused on the five elements of writing (content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanic). The technique to analyze the data used t-test formula.Two groups were compared. The result of statistical hypothesis on significance α=0.05 showed ttest (2.91) was higher than ttable (2.00). It means that, there was significant difference between the students who were taught by using basic questioning with picture and the students who were not taught by using basic questioning with picture in teaching writing. From the explanation above, it can be concluded that the use of basic questioning with picture is effective in teaching writing of the tenth year students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in Academic Year 2016/2017.

Abstract

Abstrak Budaya sekolah merupakan cerminan setiap individu yang berada disekolah, yang artinya semakin positif budaya yang dimiliki sekolah maka akan berimbas pada semakin berkembangnya karakter positif seluruh masyarakat sekolah. Oleh karena itu kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk (1) Mendampingi pembentukan budaya positif di sekolah melalui penguatan literasi dan personal value siswa, (2)Meningkatkan budaya dan minat membaca siswa di SB At-Tanzil Pandan Jaya Kualalumpur, (3) Mendorong terwujudnya karakater positif siswa melalui pembiasaan-pembiasaan kecil di sekolah. Sekolah yang menjadi sasaran pada program pengabdian ini adalah Sanggar Belajar At-Tanzil Pandan Jaya Kualalumpur yang merupakan salah satu sekolah Indonesia yang diperuntukkan bagi anak buruh migran di Malaysia, yang dalam kegiatan ini melibatkan mahasiswa yang sedang melaksanakan KKN Internasional dan dosen pendamping di sekolah tersebut. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan ini meliputi  (1) kegiatan diawali dengan supervisi pendidikan, (2) Pelatihan dan workshop, (3) Pendampingan dan monitoring implementasi program intensive literacy dan budaya membaca di sekolah secara intensif, (3) Pendampingan dan monitoring implementasi karakter, habit, dan budaya sekolah secara intensif , (4) Evaluasi dan refleksi menyeluruh merupakan langkah akhir. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahaw program supervisi dan pendampingan di SB At-Tanzil Pandan Jaya Kuala Lumpur berhasil meningkatkan skor literasi siswa, mengubah sikap dan perilaku menjadi lebih positif, serta memperkuat karakter dan budaya sekolah. Dukungan intensif dari tim supervisi dan keterlibatan aktif orang tua berperan penting dalam kesuksesan ini. Konsistensi dan evaluasi rutin diperlukan untuk memastikan keberlanjutan dan dampak jangka panjang dari program ini, yang secara keseluruhan telah menunjukkan kontribusi signifikan terhadap peningkatan kualitas pendidikan dan pembentukan lingkungan belajar yang positif. Kata kunci: budaya positif sekolah; penguatan literasi; personal values Abstract School culture is a reflection of every individual in the school, which means that the more positive the culture of the school, the more positive the character of the entire school community will develop. Therefore, this activity aims to (1) Assist the formation of a positive culture in schools through strengthening students' literacy and personal values, (2) Increase students' reading culture and interest in SB At-Tanzil Pandan Jaya Kualalumpur, (3) Encourage the realization of students' positive character through small habits at school. The target school in this service program is Sanggar Belajar At-Tanzil Pandan Jaya Kualalumpur which is one of the Indonesian schools intended for children of migrant workers in Malaysia, which in this activity involves students who are carrying out International KKN and accompanying lecturers at the school. The method of implementing this activity includes (1) the activity begins with educational supervision, (2) training and workshops, (3) mentoring and monitoring the implementation of intensive literacy programs and reading culture in schools intensively, (3) mentoring and monitoring the implementation of character, habit, and school culture intensively, (4) comprehensive evaluation and reflection is the final step. The results show that the supervision and mentoring program at SB At-Tanzil Pandan Jaya Kuala Lumpur succeeded in improving students' literacy scores, changing attitudes and behaviors to be more positive, and strengthening school character and culture. Intensive support from the supervision team and the active involvement of parents played an important role in this success. Consistency and regular evaluation are needed to ensure the sustainability and long-term impact of the program, which overall has shown significant contributions towards improving the quality of education and shaping a positive learning environment. Keywords: positive school culture; literacy reinforcement; personal values

Abstract

Pronunciation is the most important thing that non-native speakers must deal with when learning a foreign language. The purpose of this research is to improve students’ English pronunciation by using TikTok media. The research method was classroom action research with tests at the end of each cycle. It was conducted in grades IV at Sanggar Bimbingan Sentul, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, for the 2022 academic year. This classroom action research consisted of two cycles with four stages that were planning, action, observation, and reflection. The learning media used was video taken from the TikTok account @learnenglishwithcamille. The results showed that students’ English pronunciation increased after using TikTok media. This can be seen from the results of observations at cycle 1 reached 45% in the “enough” category, 55% reached the “good” category, and increased at cycle 2 to 40% students in the category “very good”, 45% in the category “good”, and 15% in the category “enough”. In conclusion, TikTok media can improve students’ English, especially in terms of English pronunciation. The implication of the study is that students enjoy learning pronunciation with TikTok media and well improved.

Abstract

Vocabulary skill is crucial for every English as foreign language (EFL) learners as it forms the foundation for effective communication, comprehension, and overall language proficiency. However, Indonesian migrant workers’ children who attend school at PPWNI Klang that has only two teachers who are not experts in the field of English, resulting in a lack of enthusiasm among students to learn the language. The study aimed to examine whether the use of Scrabble games was effective in increasing students' vocabulary achievement or not. The research design was a pre-experimental research design, with one group pretest-posttest used by the researchers. The sample of the study was 21 students of grade 9 SMP PPWNI Klang Malaysia, selected using purposive sampling. The results of the pretest and posttest data were analyzed using the paired sample t-test through the SPSS software. The findings of the study showed that Sig. (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05. This means that there is a significant difference and effectiveness in learning outcomes after using the scrabble games method in learning English vocabulary. As the conclusion, a scrabble game is an effective strategy for teaching vocabulary especially to students facing various challenges, such as limited teacher resources and an unsupportive learning environment, they can be comfortable and motivated to continue learning due to the enjoyable game-based learning experience.
