Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to develop and evaluate the feasibility of a game-based interactive puzzle learning media designed to foster critical thinking skills in fifth-grade elementary students. The media are used in the instructional topic “Creating Artworks from Household Waste Materials” to enhance students’ critical reasoning abilities. Methodology: This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach based on the ADDIE framework, comprising analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The participants were 20 fifth-grade students. Data were gathered through expert validation forms, teacher and student questionnaires, and pretest–posttest instruments, and then analyzed using Likert-scale scoring and N-Gain testing. Main Findings: The validation results indicated an average score of 4.56 from the material expert, 4.57 from the media expert, and 4.46 from the practitioner, all categorized as highly feasible. Teacher responses reached 97%, while student responses in the limited trial and field trial were 100% and 99%, respectively, indicating a very high level of practicality. The effectiveness of the media was demonstrated by N-Gain scores of 81.90% in the limited trial and 79.28% in the field trial, both of which were classified as high. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study introduces a game-based interactive puzzle media integrated with critical thinking indicators in elementary school visual arts instruction. The media emphasizes not only creativity but also the development of students’ critical thinking skills through contextual problem-solving activities that use household waste materials.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The present study aimed to develop a differentiated instructional toolkit grounded in Neil Fleming's VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, Kinesthetic) modalities for grade VII social studies, specifically on economic activity materials. Methodology: The study employed a Research and Development design following the ASSURE model (Analyze Learners, State Objectives, Select Methods, Media, and Materials, Utilize Media and Materials, Require Learner Participation, Evaluate and Revise). The research took place at SMP Nusantara 1 Tangerang and involved 79 grade VII students during the even semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. Data collection instruments included expert validation questionnaires, student response questionnaires, and pre-test/post-test assessments.Main Findings: The findings indicated that the developed instructional toolkit, which consisted of a teaching module, learning materials, student activity worksheets, interactive media, and assessment instruments, received a "highly feasible" rating from instructional design, content, and media experts. Student responses confirmed the practicality of the toolkit, as learners reported enhanced engagement when materials matched their preferred modalities. The effectiveness analysis demonstrated a significant improvement in learning outcomes, with the N-Gain score reaching the medium category (0.61). Novelty/Originality of this study: This study concludes that a VARK-based differentiated instructional toolkit serves as a valid, practical, and effective solution for improving social studies learning quality in junior high school settings.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: Learning media used in teaching must increase student interest and motivation. An example is comics. This research on the development of digital super deformed manga comics has several objectives: to assess the media's validity, to test its practicality, and to test its effectiveness. Methodology: The research used is a type of Research and Development (R&D) research that provides validation of the developed product to be used in the learning process. The development model used in this study is the 4D model, which consists of 4 stages: defining (define), planning (design), developing (development), and disseminating (disseminate). Main Findings: The study achieved a validity level of 91.5% and was deemed valid. The results of the practicality of comic media in increasing learning motivation were 91.875% in the first school, 90.625% in the second school, and 92.5% in the third school. Meanwhile, the N-Gain scores indicating an increase in learning outcomes were 0.81 in the first school, 0.63 in the second school, and 0.69 in the third school. Novelty/Originality of this study: A super deformed digital manga comic was created using Microsoft Paint. This super deformed digital manga comic, in addition to using a chibi or super-deformed style, also imitates the drawing style of Masashi Kishimoto, the creator and writer of the Naruto series. This novel comic medium has successfully improved student learning outcomes and motivation.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aimed to analyze the impact of domestic waste on environmental conditions in St. Thomas Parish, Jamaica, from environmental and public health perspectives. Methodology: A mixed-methods approach with a cross-sectional design was employed, combining environmental sampling (soil and water analysis) and field observations with community-based insights. Data were collected from multiple sampling sites representing coastal, residential, and semi-urban areas and analyzed using descriptive statistical and qualitative techniques. Main Findings: The findings revealed that domestic waste is dominated by organic (46–55%) and plastic (30–39%) components, with daily waste volumes reaching up to 35 kg per site. Soil quality showed acidic conditions (pH 5.6–6.2) with moderate to high contamination, while water quality was characterized by elevated turbidity (18–25 NTU) and microbial presence. Environmental assessments indicated degraded to severely degraded conditions, which were supported by community reports of inadequate waste management practices, such as open dumping and burning. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides a localized, integrative analysis linking environmental degradation with community waste practices in a less-explored parish-level setting, offering new insights into the intersection of environmental science and public health.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: Chemistry identity is an important affective construct in science education because it is associated with learning engagement, academic persistence, and STEM career aspirations. This study aims to evaluate whether negatively worded items represent substantive dimensions of the construct or merely methodological artifacts. Methodology: This study involved 300 senior high school students in Indonesia who completed the Chemistry Identity Scale, consisting of 27 items, including five negatively worded items. Data were analyzed using a comprehensive psychometric approach that incorporated exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and bifactor modeling to distinguish substantive construct variance from method variance attributable to item wording. Main Findings: The findings showed that negatively worded items tended to form a distinct cluster during the exploratory stage, indicating shared method variance. The best-fitting CFA model was the four-factor model with an additional negative wording method factor. Bifactor analysis revealed the dominance of a general chemistry identity factor; however, negatively worded items contributed minimally to the general construct, suggesting that these items function more as sources of method variance than as substantive indicators. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this study lies in its comprehensive evaluation of wording effects in chemistry identity measurement through the integration of EFA, competitive CFA, and bifactor modeling. These findings have practical implications for educational instrument developers, highlighting the need for greater caution when using negatively worded items, as they may affect score interpretation and lead to less accurate evaluative decisions.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to develop and validate an e-module based on Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI) for fifth-grade elementary science learning on sound and its properties, and to assess its validity through expert assessments of the material, media, and language aspects. Methodology: This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach, using a modified 4D model comprising the Define, Design, and Development stages. The e-module was created with digital design tools and incorporated Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI) approaches. Data collection involved expert validation sheets and questionnaires, which were analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods and percentage calculations. Main Findings: The validation results demonstrated that the developed e-module received high validity scores from experts: 97% from material experts, 92% from media experts, and 95% from language experts. These findings suggest that the e-module is highly valid, suitable, and feasible as a learning resource in elementary science education, especially for the topic of sound and its properties. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this study lies in the integration of Project-Based Learning and Socio-Scientific Issues within a single interactive e-module design for elementary science learning. This integration provides contextual, inquiry-based learning experiences that connect abstract scientific concepts with real-world issues, thereby enhancing conceptual understanding and supporting meaningful learning in elementary education.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The study evaluates the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in improving students’ critical thinking mastery of pressure concepts by analyzing the proportional distribution of mastery rather than relying solely on mean score comparisons. Methodology: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design was employed with 60 eighth-grade students selected through purposive sampling from intact classes. Students were assigned to a PBL group (n=30) or a conventional instruction group (n=30). Critical thinking was measured using a validated 10-item multiple-choice test adapted from Ennis’s indicators. Baseline equivalence was tested with the Mann–Whitney U test, within-group mastery shifts with McNemar’s test, and between-group distributional differences with the Chi-square test of independence. Reliability was confirmed (Cronbach’s α = 0.86). Main Findings: The PBL group achieved a significantly higher mastery rate (83%) compared to the conventional group (60%), χ²(1) = 4.02, p = 0.045, with a moderate effect size (Cramer’s V = 0.26). McNemar’s test confirmed a statistically significant mastery transition within the PBL class (p < 0.05). The strongest gains occurred in analytical explanation and inferential reasoning dimensions. Novelty/Originality of this study: Analyzing mastery distribution reveals equitable learning outcomes that mean comparisons obscure. The findings demonstrate that PBL systematically shifts categorical achievement toward competency thresholds, particularly in higher-order cognitive dimensions. In practice, this supports the adoption of distributional analysis in classroom assessment. The study’s novelty lies in its methodological shift from continuous mean scoring to categorical mastery distribution, offering a more pedagogically relevant framework for evaluating instructional equity.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The purpose of this study is to design a valid digital poster-based learning medium on the effects of coconut water on the growth of Aloe vera plants and to describe the validity of the designed digital poster-based learning. Methodology: This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate), but was limited to the Develop stage. The study focused solely on the validity testing phase and did not include testing for practicality or effectiveness. The validation process involved three expert validators, comprising one biology lecturer and two biology teachers, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a validation sheet that assessed content, presentation, language, and graphics. The collected data were analyzed descriptively using percentage-based validity criteria. Main Findings: The digital poster-based laboratory guide on the effect of coconut water on the growth of Aloe vera was categorized as a highly valid resource, with an average validity score of 92.7%. The content aspect scored 93.3%, the organization 90.8%, the language 92.3%, and the graphics 94.4%. These findings indicate that the developed material is suitable for use as a biology learning resource. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this study lies in the development of digital poster-based practical guidance learning materials that integrate local resources, specifically coconut water and Aloe vera plants, thereby not only presenting information visually but also guiding students towards hands-on activities designed to develop critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The study aims to determine empirical conversion coefficients between compressive strength (f'c) and flexural strength (fs) for a 20 MPa rigid pavement concrete design and to evaluate the specific effects of local South Sumatra aggregates combined with three distinct regional cement brands. Methodology: Laboratory experimental methods utilized 18 specimens (9 cylinders, 9 beams). Aggregates underwent sieve analysis, specific gravity testing, and moisture testing in accordance with SNI standards. Mechanical tests used a compressive strength machine and a two-point loading flexural apparatus. Materials comprised Musi River sand, Baturaja gravel, and Baturaja, Tiga Roda, and Dynamix cements. Data analysis used linear regression models. Main Findings: All variations exceeded the 20 MPa design target. Dynamix cement achieved the highest mean compressive strength (26.23 MPa), while Baturaja cement produced the highest mean flexural strength (3.22 MPa). The derived empirical conversion coefficients (fs √f’c) were 0.67 for Baturaja, 0.66 for Tiga Roda, and 0.62 for Dynamix. The collective correlation yielded a linear regression equation of y = 0.0219x + 2.6131 with R² = 0.2731. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study establishes unique, brand-specific empirical conversion factors for pavement concrete formulated with unique South Sumatra regional aggregates. It directly advances existing engineering knowledge by demonstrating how localized combinations of raw materials deviate from generalized national standard formulas, enabling field engineers to confidently perform rapid quality control without resource-intensive on-site beam trial mixes.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study analyzed the simultaneous and partial influences of seven internal and external factors: age, education level, motivation, time availability, family support, access to production resources, and group management. Methodology: A census-based quantitative survey enrolled all 40 KWT members as respondents. Structured Likert-scale (1–5) questionnaires were administered and validated through item-total correlation analysis (r-critical = 0.312) and Cronbach's alpha reliability testing (α = 0.897). Ordinal data were transformed to an interval scale using the Method of Successive Intervals (MSI). Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression in SPSS v.25, preceded by normality (Kolmogorov–Smirnov), multicollinearity (VIF), heteroscedasticity (Glejser), and autocorrelation (Durbin–Watson) assumption tests at α = 0.05. Main Findings: All seven variables simultaneously and significantly influenced member participation (F = 11.002; p = 0.000; R² = 70.6%). Partial analysis confirmed that only time availability (β = 0.361; p = 0.005) and production resource access (β = 0.430; p = 0.007) were significant predictors, with production resource access being the strongest. Age, education level, motivation, family support, and group management showed no significant partial effects, with group management exhibiting a negative coefficient attributable to the free-rider effect. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study empirically demonstrates that enabling factors, time availability, and access to production resources dominate psychological, demographic, and managerial factors in determining actual KWT member participation. It simultaneously tests seven internal and external variables in a food-production-based empowerment context, reveals the intention-behavior gap mechanism, and proposes a structural-barrier-reduction framework for empowering agricultural women’s groups.
