Abstract

This study investigated the efficacy of inquiry-based learning (IBL) in a flipped classroom in enhancing vocational students’ conceptual knowledge and inquiry skills of vocational students. We conducted IBL interventions in a flipped classroom through a pre-experimental design (i.e., one-group pretest-posttest approach). A total of 14 second-year students of the HNTec in Agro-technology programme in one of the vocational schools in Brunei Darussalam were conveniently sampled. Data were collected through achievement tests and online interviews, and analysed using the paired sample t-test, the Wilcoxon-signed rank test, and thematic analysis. The findings showed that the IBL intervention in a flipped classroom improved the conceptual knowledge and inquiry skills of vocational students. There were significant differences (p=0.001<0.05) between the pretest and posttest scores of students’ conceptual knowledge: declarative, procedural, and semantic, and the dimensions of inquiry skills: observation, questioning, hypothesising, investigation and interpretation. Students reported positive perceptions toward IBL in a flipped classroom although they faced accessibility and adaptability challenges. This study concluded that IBL in a flipped lesson environment enhances the conceptual knowledge and inquiry skills that are fundamental in developing soft skills among vocational students. Recommendations were made based on the need to ensure a simultaneous use of IBL and flipped pedagogical approaches in vocational education.

Abstract

This systematic review aimed at exploring Confucius’ thoughts and influence on moral education in China. The study results show that ancient Chinese educational thoughts of moral education could be said to have three dimensions: goal, main contents, and teaching methods described in this paper. An analysis of the key elements of Confucius' educational thought’s on moral education reveals that the purpose of moral education in ancient China was to cultivate a totally virtuous individual ('Junzi')., while as the concept of benevolence ('Ren') is considered the foundation of Confucius' moral, educational thoughts, while the concept of etiquette ('Li') is the external form of 'Ren.' Both of them are fundamental to Confucius' ideas on moral education. Confucius' moral education includes numerous teaching approaches, such as self-cultivating, individual instruction, enlightenment, and practice, which are presented in this paper. Furthermore, this paper concludes by arguing that Confucius's educational thoughts on moral education provide a significant reference for contemporary education in todays' China and has enduring value for research and practice in contemporary moral education in the 21st century.

Abstract

The Malaysian Education Blueprint (MEB) 2013-2025 emphasized on principals’ supervisory practices and teachers’ quality to enhance 21st-century international quality education. The lack of professional training for principals and the decline of teacher’s quality according to Yayasan Islam Kelantan (YIK) report (YIK, 2017) have affected the government’s aspirations. This problem requires a solution because the instructional supervision is a catalyst of teachers’ professional values and quality. Meanwhile, teachers’ quality is related to teaching professionalism practices, knowledge, understanding as well as teaching and learning skills. This study is essential for principals’ instructional supervision improvement and enhancing teachers’ quality. A quantitative, cross-sectional survey approach was adopted using a standardized three-section questionnaire comprising Section A: Respondents’ Personal and Professional Backgrounds, Section B: Instructional Supervision and Section C: Teachers’ Quality. The study sample comprised 360 teachers in YIK Religious Secondary Schools. A descriptive and inferential data analysis was generated using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 20 Version. The improved quality among teachers was the result of holistic supervisory practices of principals namely, directive guidance, collective development, professional development, curriculum development and action research guidance. Thus, it is significant that principals understand the practical dimensions of supervision in order to improve teachers’ quality in YIK Religious Secondary Schools in Kelantan. It is recommended that YIK focuses on instructional supervision practices to produce quality teachers as the principals’ instructional supervision is highly potential catalysts for quality teachers.

Abstract

Most of the teaching in secondary schools and colleges is given on a classical basis. That is, the teacher gives an explanation to a number of students orally. Many think, this form of classical teaching is the most appropriate form. Basically, with the classical form of teaching a teacher can teach a group with an unlimited number of students. Some students benefit from the online courses that provide opportunities for students. Students in schools that don't offer statistics classes may be able to learn statistics with virtual lessons. If students fail and are late on assignments during the day, they may be able to catch up at night. So, almost certainly, online classes sometimes benefit students. The results of the Mann Whitney test and the gain score indicate that classroom learning is more effective than online learning with the following values: (Z = -2.209, p = 0.028 <0.05). From the series of analyzes above, it can be concluded that of the two types of experiments tested, both classroom learning and online learning are effective. Furthermore, to see which learning technique is more effective between classroom learning and online learning, it is tested again and it turns out that the test results show that classroom learning techniques are more effective than online learning techniques for social education students.

Abstract

The designing of high school / Islamic high school physics comic teaching materials has been done to improve students' critical thinking skills in Newton's Law material. The purpose of this research is to determine to develop a physics comic for high school / Islamic high school based on problem-based learning (PBL) to improve the creative thinking skills of students at MAN Sebukar. The research method used is the research and development method, namely the 4D development method which consists of 4 phases: defining, designing, developing and disseminating. At the defining stage, need analysis on curriculum, students, and materials were carried out. The designing stage was done by designing high school / Islamic high school physics comics based on problem based learning to improve students' creative thinking skills. At the developing stage, validity, practicality and effectiveness tests were carried out. Furthermore, the disseminating stage also carried out the practicality and effectiveness tests. At the defining stage, the analysis on results of the students’ score showed the low acquisition of students competencies is due to the low creative thinking skills of students, so a teaching material is designed that is in accordance with the student's needs, materials, and learning objectives that is expected to improve students’ learning competence, namely physics comics for senior high school students/Islamic senior high school students. Furthermore, at the designing stage, an initial draft of PBL-based for / Islamic high school physics comics was made in accordance with the curriculum used in the school where the research was conducted. And in the next stage, namely the developing stage, the analysis results were obtained from the development of physics comics for high school / Islamic high school which have valid (0.85), practical (94.67%), and effective criteria for skill assessment that are judges as very good category. And the final stage after developing stage, namely the disseminating stage, researchers carried out practicality and effectiveness tests in different classes and the practicality test results were obtained in the very practical category, namely 94.33% from students’ response questionnaires and effectiveness test results from the assessment of students knowledge with a percentage of completeness reaching 82.33. % in the very good category, the students' attitude competency reached an average score of 87.43% in the very good category, the skills competency reached an average score of 89.17% with the very good category.
