Abstract

The integration of critical thinking within the classroom enhances the educational experience by providing essential support to teachers in executing their responsibilities and fostering an environment where students can acquire knowledge more efficiently. This practice influences both instructional methods employed by teachers and the learning processes of students. In the context of Morocco, the majority of existing research underscores the significance of critical thinking within higher education. However, limited attention has been given to the implementation of critical thinking within Moroccan high schools. A considerable number of high school graduates lack proficient critical thinking abilities. As a result, it is imperative to incorporate critical thinking into education to facilitate the development of students' problem-solving skills and sound decision-making capabilities. This research endeavor seeks to explore whether a statistically noteworthy correlation exists between teachers’ level of use of critical thinking and their attitudes.

Abstract

Social media has been gaining popularity in the educational sector recently. Whether scholars support its educational use because of its benefits or whether they reject its use because of the stigma surrounding it, the use of social media has become quite a trend in the educational field. This study investigated the use of social media in relation to the grammatical competence of third year Moulay Ismail University, school of arts and humanities’ English department students. The two variables in question in this study were investigated quantitatively through the use of a survey that consisted of; first a grammatical test to test the students’ grammatical competence and second some statements that students had to answer; the statements were based on a 5 scale Likert scale. The findings of this study showed that the use of social media does influence the grammatical competence of Moroccan learners. Moreover, the different statistical tests proved that the two variables have a significant relationship.

Abstract

An adverb is used to indicate roughly how frequently a typical or usual action or event occurs. It is one of the fundamental English grammar structures that present challenges for students at KRI University. The aim of this paper was to investigate the challenges of the mobility of adverbs among KRI University students. The instrument used for data collection was the open-ended questionnaire created via a Google Form with a five-item structure shared with participants. SPSS version 21 software was used to analyze the data, which was deployed at five universities in KRI at the upper secondary level to evaluate how effectively the respondents used adverbs. The results were examined using simple percentages. Many of the respondents were found to often place adverbs in ways that led to illegible and unclear sentences. Additionally, some students were found to misuse classes of words, using one when they should use the other. Since adverbs cannot just be used in every sentence positions, the study concluded that adverbs and adverbials genuinely display restricted mobility occurring in just three positions: initial, middle and final. Accordingly, the result of the study of adverb movement depends largely on the adverb's subtype and nature which have a significant role in determining its mobility.

Abstract

Today's globalization eliminates time, space, distance, and national barriers. The two novels examined in this study implied those issues. The objective of this study is to analyze the territorial boundaries, spatial dimensions, and temporal aspects that evoke a profound impact in Robinson Crusoe and Life of Pi, employing a postcolonial perspective. Both of these works originated from a shared concept, specifically the theme of being stranded as a result of a shipwreck. However, these novels were written throughout distinct times spanning several centuries. Robinson Crusoe was published in the 18th century, whilst Life of Pi was published during the 21st century. The similar concept of "Castaway" does not imply the creation of an identical narrative. The level of precision in the portrayal of territorial boundaries, space, and time in these two works is noteworthy, but they exhibit certain distinctions. The narrative of Robinson Crusoe prominently features people embodying the roles of master and slave, hence highlighting the concept of social boundaries. Contrarily, Life of Pi explores the ambiguous nature of borders about territory, space, and time, as they are consistently subject to dispute. Consequently, the delineation of power dynamics between characters is likewise a matter of contestation. In conclusion, these two novels convey two different ideologies by territory, space, and time considered through the lens of post-colonialism. The span of centuries demonstrates the diversity of human interpretations of them. Robinson Crusoe conveys the idea that colonialism is inevitable. Meanwhile, Life of Pi interprets colonialism as cruelty.

Abstract

This research explores innovative strategies to improve students' vocabulary mastery in English language teaching. Utilizing cognitive skill-based approaches, such as the "working with words" strategy, the study aims to create an effective and engaging learning environment. The research employs various methods, including observations, document analysis, recordings, and treatment procedures. Initial observations indicate that students possess a reasonable level of cognitive skills, providing a foundation for vocabulary acquisition. However, subsequent assessments reveal a decline in vocabulary proficiency, prompting the need for intervention. To address this issue, cognitive skill-based strategies, such as the "category game" and "contextual reading clues," are applied in the teaching process. These strategies aim to tap into students' intellectual capacities, motivating independent learning. Post-treatment results show significant improvement, with the contextual reading clues strategy leading to a remarkable 91.30% increase in vocabulary proficiency. In conclusion, cognitive skill-based strategies have a substantial impact on students' cognitive behaviors and vocabulary acquisition. This research emphasizes the importance of integrating vocabulary learning with reading exercises, continuous assessment, and progress recording. It underscores the significance of vocabulary mastery for language proficiency and calls for the integration of such strategies into language teaching practices.

Abstract

This article discusses the role of the famous Islamic literary work Barzanji in the context of cultural studies about concepts such as tradition, sunnah, and heresy in Islam. The Barzanji is a work that recounts the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with awe and affection and has become an integral part of religious traditions in many Muslim-majority countries. This article also aims to examine the importance of understanding tradition and sunnah in diverse cultural contexts, as well as addressing the potential issue of heresy in religious practices related to the use of Barzanji. This research uses a qualitative method with a cultural studies approach. The cultural studies approach was chosen because this research wants to examine the complex interaction between Barzanji and Muslim society.  Overall, this study concludes that Barzanji plays an important role in upholding and strengthening religious identity in certain Muslim communities, especially through its recitation in religious events. That is the context of religious practice, change or innovation (bid'ah) is acceptable if it conforms to the basic principles of the Sunnah. That is, there are situations where bid'ah can be used to enhance or perfect the understanding and practice of the Sunnah. In this perspective, the concepts of sunnah and bid'ah do not have to be seen separately but can complement each other in the context of religious interpretation and practice.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the pupils’ parenting style and their English academic performance during modular distance learning in select two schools in Alamada, Philippines. More so, the study even explored the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and English academic performance and the relationship between pupils’ parenting style and English academic performance. The researchers chose one hundred twelve Grade VI pupils through stratified random sampling with proportionate allocation. An expert-validated survey questionnaire was used to identify the parenting styles utilized by the respondents, while their English-accumulated grades served as the basis of their academic performance. Based on the result, the majority of them are 10-12 years old, male, Ilonggos, and have parents with high school education. It further revealed that the parenting style experienced by the respondents is authoritative. More so, the English academic performance of the respondents was satisfactory. It also revealed that sex, age, parents’ educational attainment, and the English academic performance of the respondents have a significantly weak relationship. More importantly, the study revealed a significant yet weak relationship between the respondents’ parents’ authoritative and neglectful parenting style and the respondents' academic performance in English. The findings suggest that incorporating authoritative parenting during modular distance learning positively influences the English academic performance of the pupils, emphasizing the importance of parental involvement in shaping educational outcomes in this mode of learning. It is then recommended that parents as teachers should be careful about their parenting style since this ultimately affects their pupils’ academic performance.

Abstract

This study sets out to investigate the extent of lack of competence in Yoruba among Yoruba-English bilingual undergraduates at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. A mixed-methods approach was adopted for interpretations to be drawn based on the combined strengths of both datasets (i.e., quantitative and qualitative data). 123 participants, 76 males, and 47 females, completed the questionnaires, while interviews were conducted with 11 participants, 8 males and 3 females, to validate their self-assessment and gain a deeper understanding of their language abilities through open-ended questions and direct observations. Quantitative data analysis involved frequency and percentage calculations, with subsequent interpretation and discussion. Qualitative analysis entailed transcribing the interviews, interpreting the responses, and discussing the findings. Both quantitative and qualitative results were compared, and the extent to which they confirmed each other was established. Findings show that a substantial number of participants exhibited a moderate ability in their L1. Although both the current and the earlier studies point towards the decline in Yoruba competence among the young generation, particularly compared to the older generation, the current study delves deeper into participants’ competence levels through various tasks like speaking, translating, and interpreting idioms.  The coverage of areas such as numeracy, days of the week, and months of the year is unique to this study as they have not been previously explored.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the beliefs and practices of pre-service English teachers concerning translanguaging within the context of the Philippines. Guided by the frameworks of Translanguaging Theory and Common Underlying Proficiency Theory, the research involved twenty-four pre-service teachers from Mindanao State University – Marawi, who participated by completing a survey questionnaire administered through convenience sampling. Utilizing a quantitative research design, the study systematically analyzed data from the Likert-scale questionnaire by creating charts and tables that detailed frequency and percentage distributions. The key findings showed a significant majority of participants held strong beliefs in the effectiveness of translanguaging within educational contexts. Furthermore, they recognized the importance of employing translanguaging for various contexts and purposes. Given their strong convictions about the benefits of translanguaging, these pre-service English teachers are likely to incorporate translanguaging strategies into their pedagogical approaches, which can enhance the educational experience for both teaching and learning. By understanding and embracing translanguaging practices, future educators may foster more inclusive and effective classroom environments that leverage their students' linguistic resources. This study not only fills a gap in the existing research on translanguaging in the Philippine educational landscape but also highlights its potential to improve educational outcomes for bilingual learners.

Abstract

Speech act is a part of pragmatics where there are definite objectives beyond the words or phrases when a speaker says something. A speech act is the utterance of an expression that contains a certain meaning and reference. This study aims to determine the aspects of illocutionary speech acts based on Searle's classification, which includes five types of speech acts. The novel analyzed is Heidi by Johanna Spyri, a fictitious and narrative work portraying characters and actions of human beings, gained from real-life experiences. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method, analyzing illocutionary speech acts in the novel Heidi using Searle's theory. A notable research gap exists in the comprehensive analysis of illocutionary speech acts within classic literature, especially in how these acts contribute to narrative and characterization. This study aims to address this gap by examining 24 utterances identified as illocutionary speech acts in Heidi, categorized into 5 assertive, 9 directive, 3 commissive, 4 expressive, and 2 declarative speech acts. The findings highlight the significant role of illocutionary speech acts in driving the narrative and character interactions in Heidi. Understanding these speech acts can provide deeper insights into character development and plot progression. It is recommended that future studies expand this analysis to other classic literary works to further explore the implications of illocutionary acts. This study underscores the importance of speech act theory in literary analysis, offering a framework for interpreting character intentions and actions beyond the literal meaning of their words.
