Abstract

The Minangkabau language and traditions, with strong geographical and cultural Islamic identity, are dominantly adhered by the Ahlusunnah Waljama’ah and Madzhab Syafi’i. Establishing Suraus as educational institutions, marked as the beginning of Islamization. Most of education system in Minangkabau was based on surau since it was first emerged from the region. Persatuan Tarbiyah Islamiyah establishment was caused by transformation from traditional surau-centered Islamic education to a more sophisticated system. The formation of this organization was also influenced by the struggle of Syaikh Sulaiman Arrasuli after his return from Mecca. This research aims to provide deeper insights regarding history and the development of Persatuan Tarbiyah Islamiyah. A literature review was conducted using several steps: selecting relevant literature, tracing sources, reading the literature, and taking the step of reading the sources thoroughly to gain new insights and form a theoretical framework. The findings of this research indicate that the split in PERTI in 1944 was caused by a shift in the organization's focus, from social-community activities to a more politically oriented direction, as well as a shift of the organization's center from Bukittinggi to Jakarta.

Abstract

The development of digital space has led to local historical narratives being increasingly consumed by the younger generation, yet these narratives are not yet fully understood as a platform for character building. This situation has created a gap between the potential of digital historiography as a medium for teaching values and its practical application. This study aims to understand how historical narratives are produced by the TikTok account Telisik Pati shape character values through interactions within the online community. Using a netnographic approach, the study analyzed 19 videos and thousands of comments from October 2024 to December 2025. Digital observation, thematic analysis, and contextual interpretation were used to reveal the value patterns that emerge in the content and user responses. The results of the study reveal four main patterns of character formation: moral-religious values manifested through historical reflection; solidarity and guyub-rukun (harmony) reinforced by local identity narratives; the appreciation of Javanese traditions and ethics revitalized through digital dialogue; and ecological awareness that grows from the connection between history and natural space. Public interaction reveals a collaborative process of value internalization, in which historical narratives function not only as information but also as emotional and pedagogical media. The discussion confirms that digital historiography plays a significant role as a character-building tool within a strong local culture. This study concludes that digital historical narratives can be an effective strategy for strengthening character values in the social media era. The implications include the utilization of historical content for character education and the reinforcement of local identity in digital communities.

Abstract

The Education for All (EFA) programme, known in Indonesia as Pendidikan untuk Semua (PUS), has received both support and criticism. In Riau, however, its principles were effectively realised through the work of Roslaini Jadin, an educator deeply committed to advancing inclusive education—particularly for women—despite not being formally connected to the EFA framework. This qualitative study employs a biographical approach to examine Roslaini’s contributions, drawing on document analysis, interviews, and field observations. The findings indicate that Jadin's initiatives directly advanced EFA objectives by establishing multi-level schooling systems, expanding access to formal, non-formal, and informal learning pipelines, and prioritizing marginalized populations. Specifically, women and children affected by poverty, disabilities, and geographic isolation. Her success was supported by internal factors such as her philanthropic character, family and organisational support, and her ability to mobilise resources strategically. Externally, her efforts were reinforced by post-Reformasi educational reforms and shifting socio-cultural dynamics that encouraged community participation. This study highlights how localized leadership, grounded in community knowledge and gender-responsive action, can substantively fulfill global educational imperatives at the grassroots level.

Abstract

This article examines the development of schools in the Mandar Afdeling during the Dutch East Indies colonial period from 1911 to 1942 and their impact on the social life of local society. The study aims to analyze the background of the introduction of formal education, the growth patterns of schools managed by the colonial government, missionary (zending) institutions, and nationalist organizations, as well as their implications for changes in social structure and local power relations. The research employs the historical method, encompassing heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, and is supported by a social history approach. The findings indicate that colonial education in Mandar did not merely function as a means of intellectual advancement, but also served as an instrument for bureaucratic formation and social control. Schools contributed to the emergence of an educated bureaucratic elite and facilitated a theological shift from local belief systems toward Christianity in inland areas through zending schools. Meanwhile, schools established by nationalist organizations played a role in fostering social awareness and national consciousness. Thus, education became a crucial factor in the social change of Mandar society in the early twentieth century.
