Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Rising sea level as one of the effects of climate change may probably destroy the coastal area. This nature phenomenon is explained in a pictorial children's storybook entitled Sea Change. The story tells about rising sea level in Fiji, and it is suitable to the reality occurring in Fiji. Rising sea level reaches the land by the sea, hence the people living there must be relocated. Sea Changes is analyzed using ecocritical approach and semiotic theory. This study aims to reveal the meaning of visual appearance which goes to the values containing in the story. The analysis reveals four ecocritical elements by Scott Slovic, these are where the humans are, where the humans live, how the humans treat the environment, and how humans treat other humans. The four questions are answered using semiotic theory by Charles Sanders Peirce. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with descriptive analysis, which emphasizes the process of semiosis with the meaning of the relationship between signs or representamen in the pictorial book and the values for children. The results of the study are that Sea Change gives some value for children, these are about where humans properly live, and how humans properly treat the environment and other humans.

Abstract

Learning models play an important role in providing opportunities for students to be actively involved in exploring and applying everyday Biology concepts. One of the effective learning models is Predict-Observe-Explain (POE), which focuses on developing students' life skills. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the POE learning model in improving Biology learning outcomes, especially in the context of the excretory system. This research is a pseudo-experimental study that focuses on the variable of students' Biology learning outcomes, applying the POE learning model. This research methodology uses Pretest-Posttest Group Design. The population of this study was all VIII grade students at MTsS Darul Istiqamah Gowa, with two classes consisting of 22 students each. The analysis results showed that the experimental class, which used the POE learning model, had better learning outcomes than the control class. This improvement can be seen in both classes' minimum, maximum, and average values. Based on the results of this analysis, it can be concluded that there is a significant increase in learning outcomes for students who apply the POE learning strategy compared to students who do not.

Abstract

Women and men have different ways of using language, which makes women have their own features called women’s language features. This study examines the use of women’s language features in Turning Red (2022). The study aims to analyze women’s language features used by the female lead character in Turning Red (2022) based on its types according to Lakoff (1975) and its functions according to Jakobson (1960). The study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach in interpreting the data. Among the 170 data analyzed, 9 out of 10 women's language features were identified. These include hypercorrect grammar (26.5%), lexical hedges or fillers (22%), emphatic stress (19%), intensifiers (16.5%), avoidance of strong swear words (4.7%), super polite forms (4%), tag question (3%), empty adjectives (2.4%), and rising intonation on declarative (1.9%). Notably, the presence of precise color terms features is absent from the data. Furthermore, the analysis uncovered 5 out of 6 language functions, namely referential (39.4%), expressive (38%), phatic (16%), directive (6%), and poetic function (0.6%). It is worth noting that no instances of the metalinguistic function were found within the analyzed data. This study is expected to enhance comprehension regarding women’s language features, while also serving as a valuable resource for both educational purposes and further research in the field of linguistics, specifically within the realm of sociolinguistics.
