Abstract

Grammar is central in language learning and acquisition. Learning a foreign language means learning how the sentences are correctly formed and function. In that process, several skills are required to learn with no exception the knowledge of grammar. In addition to that, having an adequate amount of interest can influence the grammar learning outcome. With that consideration, this study aimed to examine the knowledge of simple tenses of fourteen first-year English Education students in one of Indonesia universities and to investigate whether their learning interests have a significant role in their performance. The data were collected through observation, a test, and a close-ended interview, and were analyzed through a descriptive quantitative method. The results of the test show that students’ grammar competence was inadequate. Several factors were identified as the causes for such findings. However, they showed a great interest in learning the language which can be a starting point for future improvement.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the implementation of Suggestopedia by a teacher in an English institution, following Lozanov's four main stages of activities: presentation, concert, elaboration, and practice. The data were obtained through observation focusing on teacher activities during the implementation and observed effectiveness of the Suggestiopedia method in the language learning session. The positive outcomes of using Suggestopedia in language learning sessions suggest promising prospects for future applications in educational settings. It is essential to recognize the transformative impact it can have on language learning when implemented thoughtfully and inclusively. By addressing the diverse needs and preferences of language learners, and integrating a balanced approach that combines diverse learning modalities, meaningful language applications, and comprehensive language practice and assessment, educators can maximize the effectiveness of this approach.

Abstract

This paper is addressed to promote one of the teaching-learning materials for EOP students by considering several appropriate material developments. Speaking subject becomes the layout of this research, and Google Maps is chosen to be adapted into their learning material. The writer started the procedure with several steps, such as planning the sequence of learning components, the adaptation process, and inserting preferable tasks. Thus, along with the procedures, the material is added by several linguistic features such as vocabulary, grammar, and dialogue. Halfway through the material construction, the writer completes it with a preferable task to enhance the opportunity to perform the language. The selection of Google Maps as speaking material is viewed as having a strong relevance to the EOP context, which means it can impact their involvement in the process of learning language a lot.

English for Specific Purposes means learning English based on students’ needs. This research focuses on developmental research that aims to develop English for Specific Purposes book for Chemistry Education Department students of Musamus University and also to know the effectiveness of the book on the student's ability in English. The ADDIE Research and Development (R&D) model was used in this research. This ESP book was developed based on the problem and the need of the students in Chemistry Education at Musamus University. This developmental research consisted of five stages including analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The first was an analysis which means the researcher found out the need of the students before developing the book. The second was designed that prepared the content of the book. The third is a developmental stage that developed the content of the book which consisted of 12 chapters and doing the validation. The fourth is the implementation of the book in the teaching and learning process. The last was doing a trial of the book to know its effectiveness. The students of chemistry education were given the pre-test and post-test based on the content of the book. The pre-test was given before implementing the book while the post-test was given after implementing the book. The results of the ESP book that has been made indicate the following points: 1) the book based on the student's need, 2.) the content of the book was based on learning objectives and the experts gave good comments on the book content, 3.) The mean score for the pretest was 75.77, while the mean score for the post-test was 80.54. Abstract

Speaking skills are one of the basic skills that must be possessed in mastering English. However, this speaking skill is challenging, considering English is a foreign language in Indonesia. Many factors ultimately become the cause of students' speaking skills needing to be improved. At the elementary school level, the researcher observed that students' speaking skills needed to be enhanced due to the lack of variety of activities provided and the lack of space for students to explore their speaking skills. This is what underlies the researchers to conduct activities to improve the speaking skills of elementary school-level students in Merauke. This activity involves teachers and students in grade 5 elementary school. The action begins with conducting interviews and preliminary observations of teachers and students, administering a pre-test to determine students' initial abilities, teaching to improve students' speaking skills, and conducting a post-test to measure the achievement of activity objectives. From these activities, the results showed that students experienced an increase in both self-confidence and speaking skills.

Abstract

This study investigates the motivations and attitudes towards learning English among law students in Indonesia. Using a quantitative approach, 54 law students from a prominent Indonesian university were surveyed. Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were employed to examine relationships between motivational factors, attitudes, and self-assessed proficiency. The findings reveal strong instrumental motivation driven by career prospects and academic advancement. While students value English proficiency, a notable gap exists between perceived importance and self-assessed language skills, mainly speaking and listening. Challenges in legal vocabulary acquisition and oral communication were identified as key areas for improvement. The study also found a preference for multimedia and interactive learning methods. These insights provide valuable direction for enhancing legal English education in Indonesia, suggesting a more tailored, interactive, and technology-enhanced approach that addresses law students' specific needs and preferences.

Abstract

This paper systematically aims to determine the usage of code-mixing and code-switching as the communicative strategy employed by EFL teachers. Discovering the existing types of both codes and the affected teachers’ factor of using both explicitly became the concern of this research. Thus, in-depth interviews and non-participant observation were occupied to complete the answer to this qualitative research. The findings draw that intra-sentential and inter-sentential fall as the type of code-mixing, and inter-sentential, lexical, and phonological have remained as the depicted types of code-mixing. Other findings also mentioned that upbringing factors fall into three categories: translating the words or phrases, repeating the comprehension, and simplifying certain expressions. The significance of this research is to frame up the existing phenomena of language variety in language teaching and the motives that can enhance teachers’ understanding of using both codes as communication strategies in teaching language.  Keywords: Code Mixing, Code Switching, EFL Teacher

Abstract

Syntax is the study about the pattern of the language and mastery of syntax plays a crucial role in understanding grammatically correct English. This research aims to investigate the common errors made by students when constructing tree diagrams for phrases and sentences. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method. There were eight students involved in this research who took the syntax class from the English Education Department at Musamus University. Data were collected through written tests in which students were asked to construct tree diagrams for noun phrases, verb phrases, prepositional phrases, and sentences. The result showed that students got difficulty in constructing tree diagram for sentence level and prepositional phrase level. The findings show varying levels of student performance. For phrase level analysis, 100% of students correctly constructed the tree diagram for a noun phrase, and 87.5% succeeded with the verb phrase. However, only 37.5% accurately analyzed the prepositional phrase, indicating significant difficulty with this type. At the sentence level, accuracy dropped further: 75% of students made errors in constructing tree diagrams for more complex sentences such as "The beautiful girl cares of her cat" and "The smart students in the library are smiling gaily", while 87.5% made errors on a simpler sentence, "I have one sister". These results suggest that while students generally grasp phrase structures, they struggle with full sentence constructions and hierarchical syntactic patterns. The study highlights the need for more focused instruction and practice in sentence-level syntax and tree diagram construction to improve students’ analytical skills and grammatical proficiency.
