Abstract

By reflecting the hymn of the Christians, Paul has found that although Jesus possessed divine equality, and its consequent privilege to appear like Yahweh in glory, he did not stand on his dignity. Jesus did not treat the states of divine glory (i.e. being equal with God) as a privilege or possession to be clutched so tenaciously that it might be exploited in the future. Jesus renounced his heavenly claims, assumed the humblest human position, even died on the cross. As a consequence “God has highly exalted him” (Phi 2: 9a) and “God bestowed on him the name which is above every name” (Phi 2: 9b). Jesus made himself ‘obedient’ and as a consequence God gave him authority over those in heaven and on earth and under the earth”. By using the hymn of the first Christians considering the life of the Philippians Paul asked them to be in humility and self-sacrifice in their relations with one another. Paul exhorted them in daily life to give way to the views, wishes of others and making yourself appear unimportant. Paul asked them to have the same attitude toward each other as the attitude you have to Christ. Do not attempt to dominate the rest, but rather have the closest sympathy with their needs and interests. The believers should consider other better than themselves. Others are truly better than them, since they are manifestations of God or of Christ. Paul urged the Christians to contemplate the whole story of Christ, so that they could live as Christians, as the followers of Christ.

Abstract

There are different responses given to the question: “Is the Bible really disparaging the women?” Literally speaking, it is that we find clear, explicit cases of the marginalization or segregation of women in several passages of the Bible, both in the Old and the New Testaments. These texts sound strange and surprising to one who is not familiar with the culture of the biblical world and believes in a just and liberating God. Therefore, a reading from a woman’s perspective is indispensable as a guarantee that the Bible’s God is also on the side of them. To read the Bible from a woman’s perspective, we must read it with women’s eyes, that is to say, conscious of the existence of individuals who are cast aside because of their sex. For this reason our reading does not come out spontaneously, and a conscious effort is needed to discover new women-liberating aspects or even elements in the text that other perspectives would not bring to light. Feminist consciousness is a basic skill indispensable to read the Bible from woman’s perspective.

Abstract

A holy war is a war held in the contect of faith in God. In this kind of war, the role of God is so dominant, so that this war is believed God himself who is wagging the war. The war is called a holy war because God is holy. A holy war is not just a war for the sake of war, but for the sake of a fidelity to the will and God’s rule. To keep this war holy and so would grant a victory, the troop shoul obey the ritual rule of war. 1 Sam 15: 1-35 is an example of Saul’s infidelity to the rule of war which causes God’s anger.

Abstract

In 1950, Pope Pius XII, in the apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus, promulgated the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a dogma of the Church. It was declared that the Immaculate Mother of God, Mary ever virgin, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory. An assumption is an act of God. She was taken up by the power of God. The glorification of Mary was following the ascension of Jesus Christ, her son. It seems impossible that she who so much loved him should after the earthly life be separated from him in either body or soul. The assumption of Mary is the first fruit of his own glorification. However the dogma is still opened regarding whether or not she actually died. The faithful believe that she had been transformed from the earthly body to the heavenly body. She had been glorified in her total human personhood. The glorious assumption of Mary is also a sign of the glorious assumption of the whole Church. We behold in her glorification a sign of certain hope and comfort for the whole Church, as well as for her individual members. When we celebrate the Assumption of Mary, we are celebrating our own final glory. Through “the woman clothed with the sun”, we receive a special blessing to be light for others.

Abstract

The sacraments of Christian initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist lay the foundations of every Christian life. The faithful are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by the sacrament of Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist the food for eternal life. The sacraments of Christian initiation become effective (as medium of salvation), when ritual celebration of these sacraments unites with real act of the faithful. The grace accepted in ritual celebration must bear fruit in the real act. Man/woman who has received the sacraments of Christian initiation asks, “What deed must I do?” Baptism guides someone to live with and in Christ and be called to provide the truth. Confirmation brings someone to be a faithful witness of Christ. Eucharist makes someone renew always his/her faithfulness as a disciple of Christ by doing solidarity. Thus the sacraments of initiation guide faithful to a community where God lives.

Abstract

Even though people are not aware of postmodern philosophy or way of thinking, the philosophy, however has penetrated and thrusted every day life and becomes trendy in our common discourse in our time. Its characteristics such as liberal thinking, freedom of expression, criticism on any kind of authority and normative and universal idea – as sharp criticism to modern philosophy and way of thinking – have attractted people in expressing their thoughts through any medium in their lives. One of the area touched by the philosophy is hermeneutics. Many questions arise: In what sense does the postmodernism criticise the modernism? What is the basic presupposition of the philosophy? Within the field of hermeneutics, what is the contribution of the philosophy to hermeneutics but at the same time the danger enveloved inside?

Abstract

Postmodernism is a popular usage terminology in our life. In fact this term has been used in all aspects of life with different meanings. Sometimes the usage makes the term itself blurred and even contradictory to the term. Though it some time makes us confused, it can not to denied that postmodernism has become a fact in our era. It has become a “trend” among many streams. As a trend, postmodernism has contributed a special characteristic to the generation of our era.

Abstract

A strong current in thinking nowadays is postmodernism. It is signed by the changes of opinion and by calling in question the absoluteness of reason, and tradition. We should observe the sign of our times, and afterward we ask what we should do. We answer our question by reconstructing morality with some important ideas as follows: 1) We refound our morality on truth known by faith and reason; 2) To make moral as a critical instrument in searching goodness; 3) To restore our moral habit by knowing virtues (back to virtues).

Abstract

Abstract

Through the Second Vatican Council the Catholic Church has renewed her teachings on Mary. It was done by treating out harmonically the true origins on the teachings such as the Bible, the writings of the Fathers of the Church and her tradition (pietas fidelium). The tradition enlivened by the Church for ages, is the proof of love for Jesus’ Mother and ours. There was a kind of symposium conducted by Catholic and Protestant theologians and experts in the Bible to find out the truth on Mary according to the Scripture and their common tradition. That is the reason why both denominations have to find the convergence in their teachings on Mary. Protestanism on its part needs to know precisely the teachings and attitudes of Reformators who do not see Mary as a scandal for ecumenical scene. The Catholic Church, on her part too, has to discover the proper position of Mary in the Scripture itself.
