Abstract

This study discusses the development of a blog script to promote Pinang Banjar Tourism in Gelumbang, South Sumatra. The writer employed the Research and Development (R&D) method, as described by Sukmadinata (2017), which consists of three stages: Preliminary Study, Model Development, and Final Product Testing. Data were collected through literature studies, field observations, interviews, and documentation. The script was written using the AIDA model (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) and enhanced with visual and structural elements, including a clear title, engaging content, and a call ot action. The final product is a blog titled “Pinang Banjar's Rural Natural Charm Presents a Beautiful and Peaceful Atmosphere” published on Blogger. It introduces Pinang Banjar as a tranquil, affordable, and scenic destination, offering activities such as boating and camping. Feedback from language experts, bloggers, and readers showed positive responses regarding both content and design. The blog effectively raises awareness of lesser-known tourism destinations and promotes sustainable tourism practices. Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study explores the moral messages found in the lyrics of the Buzz album by Niki Zefanya, an Indonesian singer who writes and performs in English. The album contains 13 songs, each filled with emotional and reflective content that offers listeners insights into life, relationships, and personal growth. This research employs a qualitative method with a moral criticism approach to analyse how Niki communicates values such as empathy, resilience, and self-awareness through figurative language and storytelling. The data were collected by carefully listening to each song while reading the lyrics and examining the feelings or conditions of the author when writing the song. The collected data were analysed using Narrative Analysis for Moral Values, identifying stories, emotions, and cultural contexts within the lyrics to uncover and categorize moral themes. The findings show that, although the messages are not stated directly, they can be felt and understood through careful interpretation. This study aims to help listeners, especially non-native English speakers, understand the deeper meanings behind English song lyrics and encourage more thoughtful listening experiences. Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to analyze the types of slang language used in the movie Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method and referred to Elisa Mattiello’s (2008) classification theory, which divided slang into five categories: Group and Subject Restriction, Secrecy and Privacy, Informality and Debasement, Vulgarity and Obscenity, and Time-Restriction, Ephemerality, and Localism. Data were collected from the film's dialogue and screenplay, then identified, categorized, and analyzed based on the context and usage of each slang expression. The findings showed that slang language appeared frequently throughout the film and served various communicative functions, such as building character identity, reinforcing group belonging, and reflecting cultural nuances in informal speech. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Error Analysis (EA) is an important branch of applied linguistics that examines the occurrence, nature, causes, and consequences of errors in language learning and use. This paper discusses the concept of error analysis in both spoken and written language, emphasizing its role in understanding the language acquisition process. Drawing on the theories of Corder and other scholars, the study highlights the distinction between errors, mistakes, slips, and solecisms, as well as the significance of learner errors as indicators of linguistic development and transitional competence. The paper reviews various classifications of language errors, including substance errors, text errors, semantic errors, grammatical errors, morphological errors, and syntactic errors. Particular attention is given to common errors in writing, such as misspellings, punctuation mistakes, typographical errors, dyslexic errors, and confusibles, as well as pronunciation and suprasegmental errors in spoken language. Furthermore, the study explores lexical-semantic errors, including confusion of sense relations and collocational errors, together with grammatical deviations at the morphological and syntactic levels. The findings suggest that language errors are a natural and inevitable part of the learning process rather than signs of failure. Error analysis provides valuable insights for researchers in understanding language acquisition, assists teachers in identifying learners’ difficulties and improving instructional strategies, and helps learners recognize and correct their linguistic weaknesses. Consequently, errors should be viewed positively as evidence of progress and development in language learning. The study concludes that systematic analysis of spoken and written language errors contributes significantly to more effective language teaching and learning practices. Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study presents the process of writing a novelette entitled Angel Blooms in the Darkness, developed as part of a Research and Development (R&D) project using Plomp's model. The research addresses identified issues including low student awareness of writing skills, insufficient motivation to write, limited knowledge of novelettes as a literary form, and inadequate understanding of novelette structure. The study employed five stages: preliminary investigation, design, realisation/construction, test and evaluation, and implementation. The resulting novelette—7,631 words, 41 pages in A5 format—follows the drama romance genre featuring Generation Z protagonists and applies Freytag's Pyramid narrative structure across its prologue, eleven chapters, and epilogue. Four experts, two in literary writing and two in English, validated the manuscript, yielding an average score of 3.19 out of 4 from literary writing experts and 3.00 out of 4 from English experts. The validated product was subsequently published on Wattpad. Findings confirm that the novelette serves as an effective and accessible medium for developing students' creative writing skills and increasing their motivation to write. Abstract

ABSTRACT: This research aims to design a culinary tourism e-booklet using the AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) copywriting model to promote culinary tourism in 26 Ilir Area, Palembang. The main issue identified was the absence of practical and engaging digital media to help tourists easily discover recommended traditional foods in the area. The study applied the Research and Development (RnD) method using the ADDIE model, which included four stages: analysis, design, development, and implementation, while evaluation was not included due to the writers’ limitations. The data were collected through observations, documentation, and interviews with experts in the fields of copywriting, English language, and graphic design. The results showed that the integration of AIDA-based copywriting E-booklet by using analysis, design, development, and implementation stages as part of the ADDIE model was judged valid and feasible by expert validators after revision. The developed e-booklet was designed in a digital format, making it accessible across various devices and supporting the promotional efforts of the 26 Ilir Area. Abstract

This study analyzes the colonial and cosmopolitan visions in the novel Merangkul Beruang Merah (Hugging the Red Bear) (2016) by Ade Irma Elvira, which tells the story of the struggle of the main character, who comes from humble, ordinary family, to obtain a scholarship to Russia and live in that country. Using postcolonial approach, this study applies Debbie Lisle's theory of colonial and cosmopolitan visions. This paper analyzes how the main character, who comes from a former colonized country, views herself and the outside world. In the colonial vision, the results show that the main character initially experiences a sense of inferiority towards foreign cultures, while in the cosmopolitan vision, she finds a modern, developed atmosphere through putting forward open-mindedness, harmony, and empathy. In addition, there are several ways the main character conducts in relation to both visions, namely resistance and negotiation. Keywords: colonial vision, cosmopolitan vision, resistance, negotiation

Abstract

Persuasive communication is a critical determinant of success in contemporary business, yet few studies have examined how a single business leader adapts classical rhetorical appeals across contrasting communicative contexts. This study analyzed the use of persuasive language in two speeches delivered by Steve Jobs: the 2005 Stanford Commencement Address, a motivational speech, and the 2007 iPhone Launch Presentation, a commercial product presentation. Using a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Aristotle's rhetorical framework, utterances containing ethos, pathos, and logos were identified from publicly available transcripts that were manually cross-checked against the original video recordings, classified using a theory based coding checklist, classified using a theory-based coding checklist, and analyzed following Miles and Huberman's model of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that Jobs employed all three appeals in both speeches but shifted his rhetorical emphasis according to audience and purpose. Pathos dominated the Stanford address through vulnerable personal storytelling about adoption, failure, and mortality, whereas logos and ethos dominated the iPhone presentation through competitor comparison, feature-based reasoning, and appeals to Apple's record of innovation. The study concludes that effective business persuasion is context-dependent: speakers calibrate emotional and logical appeals to fit their objectives. The findings could potentially offer practical insights for business communication instruction in vocational higher education. Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study explored students' experiences of speaking anxiety and practice opportunities in relation to their self-confidence in public speaking. The research employed a qualitative design involving ten students from the English Study Program of Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations and analyzed using thematic analysis proposed by Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings revealed that speaking anxiety negatively influenced students' self-confidence through fear of making mistakes, nervousness, fear of negative judgment, and anxiety experienced before, during, and after speaking activities. On the other hand, practice opportunities positively influenced students' confidence through frequent speaking practice, classroom speaking activities, lecturer support, and peer feedback. The study concludes that speaking anxiety tends to reduce students' confidence, whereas regular practice opportunities and supportive learning environments help students develop stronger self-confidence in public speaking. These findings provide useful implications for lecturers and educational institutions in creating effective public speaking learning environments Keywords: Public Speaking, Speaking Anxiety, Practice Opportunities, Self-Confidence, Qualitative Study
