Abstract

This article contains the relationship between the views of the philosophy of progressivism towards slow learners in the learning process. Slow learners are students who have a slower learning process with an average IQ score of around 70 – 90. As a teacher, we need to pay more attention to slow learners so they can maximize their learning abilities and explore their potentials. This article uses library research methods, which conducted by using literature (library), in the form of books, notes, or other reference sources. Therefore, the philosophy of progressivism education is an understanding that makes learning meaningful and not authoritarian learning which requires students to master all the learning materials provided. There are five links between slow learners and the flow of progressivism education philosophy, as follows: (1) times, slow learners need more time to study the material given by the teacher; (2) giving problems related to everyday life, slow learners are given lessons in accordance with real examples so they are easy to imagine; (3) giving awards, awards given to slow learners can increase their motivation in learning; (4) learning with audio and visual media, which can strengthen and attract slow learners’ attention during learning process; and (5) review, reviewing learning process will strengthen their memory in remember the lessons that have been given.

Abstract

Mathematical representation is the center of mathematics learning activities. Representations help students understand various forms of mathematical presentation. Strengthening mathematical representation in learning is based on learning theory, namely Thorndike Theory. American Educational Psychologist Edward L. Thorndike has a "Law of Effect" view which means that learning will be more successful if the student's response to a stimulus is followed by a sense of pleasure and satisfaction. Thorndike views learning as a stimulus-response formation process that determines the quality of learning outcomes. This research is a literature review with the aim of knowing what stimulates student representation, how teachers act so that students are able to create appropriate representations, and how students create appropriate representations. Various views on learning theory have emerged, one of which is utilitarian which views a good action as maximizing a sense of satisfaction and happiness. Representation in the formation of stimulus-response is intended for the success of learning mathematics that causes satisfaction. This paper attempts to shed the author's reflective thoughts on Thorndike's Theory in the context of mathematical representation based on Utilitarian ideology.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe students' problem-solving abilities on geometry material based on Van Hiele's level of thinking in class VIII of SMPN 2 Wanasaba in the 2020/2021 school year. The method used in this study are tests and interviews. The results showed that the thinking level of students in class VIII D of SMP Negeri 2 Wanasaba was generally dominant at level 0 (visualization), as many as 13 people (48.14%) of the 27 students who took the test. In solving geometry problems according to Polya's stages, students who are at level 0 (visualization) have been able to do the stage of understanding the problem well but are still not perfect in making plans and implementing settlement plans. Students at level 1 (analysis) have been able to carry out the stages of understanding the problem, making plans and implementing plans, but in the stage of reviewing, students are not able to re-examine the results of the completion. Students at level 2 (informal deduction) are able to carry out the stages of understanding the problem, making plans, implementing a settlement plan and looking back even though they are not perfect at the stage of looking back. Students at level 3 (deduction) have very good problem solving skills, they are able to carry out the stages of understanding the problem, making plans, implementing plans and looking back appropriately and the calculation process is also carried out correctly. This shows that the higher the Van Hiele thinking level of the students, the better their geometric problem solving abilities will be.
