Abstract

The value chain of the agricultural sector of developing countries, including Indonesia, is part of a global value-chain, especially for the value chain of plantation products that are traded globally (for example, coffee, cocoa, tea, and palm oil). Many researchers use a global value-chain perspective with a focus on evaluating the relationship between multinational companies (which are considered the main actors) and other actors (including producers and consumers) in international trade. However, the argument that developing countries need to have more control over global value-chains deserves attention. Therefore, this study aims to identify potential strategies for upgrading the value chain as a whole and in a more systematic manner; thereby strengthening its position and influence in global value-chains. The research objective is achieved by reviewing the literature specifically on the value chain, but also by expanding the review to literature on politics, economics and management. In addition, this research is also strengthened by the results of empirical research as 'cases' or 'examples' related to the proposed strategies. The results of the study indicate that upgrading the value chain is achieved through a combination of strategies, for example increasing product value added and improving chain governance. In addition, this study concludes that, in the era of the liberalized market, the role of the government should be more visible. The liberalized market does not always achieve an optimal equilibrium, and therefore the government must be able to correct it with relevant regulations and/or policies.

Abstract

Abstract The high percentage of poor households working in the agricultural sector in the province of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) needs serious attention from the government, considering that the majority of NTT's population works in the agricultural sector. Therefore, it is crucial to study the determinants of the poverty status of agricultural households to provide input in overcoming the problem of poverty in NTT Province. By utilizing the March 2021 Socio-Economic Survey data and two analytical methods (descriptive and binary logistic regression), this study aims to obtain the characteristics of household heads who work in the agricultural sector and identify factors that influence poverty status of agricultural households in NTT Province. The results showed that the majority of household heads worked in the rice and secondary crops (71.8%), aged 40-59 years (52.13%), male (84.7%), graduated from elementary school/equivalent (42.41%), had less than 5 household members (53.34%), lived in rural areas (96.08%), and worked in informal sector (97.28%). While the results of binary logistic analysis showed that the variables that have a significant effect on the poverty status of the head of the agricultural household in NTT Province are place of residence, age of the head of the household, education level of the head of the household, number of household members, employment status of the head of the household, number of working hours of the head of household, have received credit assistance and have accessed the internet in the last three months. Abstract

This study aims to assess the factors that cause food insecurity and find solutions to the factors that cause food insecurity in Ujung Labuang Village, Suppa District, Pinrang Regency, South Sulawesi. The respondents invited 32 people, and 5 key informants. The analytical method was multiple linear regression analysis The results of the analysis showed that from 5 indicators studied, there were three indicators that affected food insecurity and became a contributing factor to food insecurity in Ujung Labuang Village, namely the area of agricultural land worked (0,12213385), the number of food supply facilities and infrastructure (0,132531849), and household income levels (0,178992577), while the level of the conditions of transportation facilities (- 0,18453267), the level of household income of the proportion of household expenditure (- 0,30416651) has no influence on the causative factors of food insecurity. The recommended solution is food fulfillment for poor and food insecure groups through an empowerment approach involving the participation and active role of all stakeholders and communities. Utilization of yard land by planting local food commodities can be used as the alternative food substitute for rice.
