Abstract

Sugarcane is an important crop in the Philippines planted throughout the country but is most abundant in the Visayas and particularly on Negros Island. This study aims to determine the effect of the application of different concentrations of bio-stimulant on enhancing root and biomass accumulations at the pre-tillering stage of the sugarcane plant. The study was conducted at the University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos School of Agriculture, Philippines last December 6, 2023, to February 6, 2024. One hundred pieces of two-eyed cane points of RC-88 were used as planting materials. Soaking the cane points in water was done for 24 hours. Thereafter they were removed from water and air-dried for 30 minutes. The bio-stimulant was prepared before the application based on the study protocol. The bio-stimulant was diluted in distilled water and applied at the base of the plant using a measuring cup for even distribution. Regular monitoring for the presence of pests/diseases was done including watering. There were five (5) treatments, replicated four (4) times using Complete Randomized Design (CRD). Statistical analysis revealed that most of the characteristics of sugarcane plants significantly correlated with roots and biomass accumulation when applied with different levels of concentrations of bio-stimulant concentration at the pre-tillering stage of sugarcane. The use of 500ml Bio-stimulant significantly influenced the germination, tiller height, weight of tillers, weight of roots, length of roots, and biomass. This study recommends the use of 500ml bio-stimulant in enhancing the rooting and biomass accumulation of sugarcane setts at pre-tillering stage.

Abstract

The aimed of this study was to investigate the possibility of using comic strips as teaching materials to address environmental issues related to the over-exploitation of deep wells, which was one of the main environmental problems in Tabango, Leyte. In essence, the goal of this study is to address this issue because people often lack awareness of the implications of their actions. The efficacy of rubric ratings was employed by the investigator to assess the calibre of the comic strips generated. The researcher created a comic strip as instructional material using a descriptive-developmental design, and validators would act as the study's primary respondents. Their opinions about how the comic strips were used were obtained as primary data regarding the application of these educational resources. The research concluded that the validated comic strip was reliable, and the developed comic strips were found to be useful, appropriate, and effective in addressing the issue of overuse of deep wells due to the reason that most of the expert validators have a weighted average of 0.98, 0.54, 1.08, 1.16, 1.18 having an overall interpretation as “AGREE”. Thus, the study highlights the potential of utilizing comic strips as educational material for environmental issues.

Abstract

The experiences of English teachers in learning assessment in the modular distance learning modality provide valuable insights into the assessment trends and interventions needed to improve student learning. This study delved into the experiences of English teachers in learning assessment in the modular distance learning modality as a precursor to understanding the assessment trends and interventions in the Department of Education, Division of Bohol, and Tagbilaran City for the school year 2021–2022. A narrative research design was used to understand the experiences of ten (10) purposely selected English teachers from public schools in Bohol and Tagbilaran City Divisions in English assessment in the modular distance learning modality. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data, which was then analyzed using thematic analysis. Results revealed that the selected English teachers in Bohol have been using various assessment tools, methods, and feedback mechanisms during the implementation of modular distance learning. These include diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments and traditional and alternative assessment methods. Teachers have also used multiple feedback mechanisms, including written, online, in-person, and multimodal feedback. To maintain academic integrity, teachers have been providing clear guidance and support to students, avoiding bias and favoritism, and using specific criteria for evaluation. The study also found that teachers have faced challenges in ensuring academic integrity, overcoming logistical and communication barriers, and adapting to new instructional and assessment methods. However, they have demonstrated resilience by aligning their assessment tools with the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC), utilizing innovative feedback mechanisms, and promoting academic integrity. The study concludes by recommending that teachers adopt a flexible approach to assessment, promote the alignment of assessment tools with the MELC, encourage multiple feedback mechanisms, promote academic integrity, and provide support and resources to teachers.

Abstract

As the world slowly recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is clear that we will not be returning to the world we once knew. Instead, we are adapting to a "New Normal" - a world where we must learn to coexist with the virus. This new way of life vastly differs from what we were accustomed to, and every aspect of our lives has been impacted. Teachers have a significant role in shaping the future of education, and they, too, have been affected by the pandemic. In this study, we sought to understand the challenges and issues public elementary school teachers face in the Philippines due to the pandemic. We employed a qualitative phenomenological research design, selecting nine participants who shared their experiences. Through our analysis, we identified seven themes, including lack of communication, parents' low levels of education, insufficient time for printing modules, teachers' out-of-pocket expenses, difficulty in assessing learners' academic performance, the need for professional growth, and teachers' positive response to the changes. Despite their challenges, these teachers remain resilient and motivated to adapt to the new normal. Despite the difficulties, they continue to work hard to ensure their pupils receive quality education.

Abstract

This descriptive-correlational study aimed to identify the students’ awareness regarding their career interests and career readiness regarding the learning experience, learning outcomes, and pre-college experience of Grade 10 students at a private university in Cebu City. Using Slovin’s formula, there should be 206 respondents; however, 198 have participated. Also, several statistical treatments were applied to the study’s findings. The findings regarding the profile and the career interests of the students, as well as their age, gender, total income, parents' educational attainment, and occupation, found no relationship. Another finding regarding the profile and career readiness revealed that both the mother and father's age and educational attainment have a significant relationship. Career interest and career readiness have a solid positive relationship. Thus, the finding shows that the relationship between the two variables is solid, and it also indicates that interest will influence the student's career readiness and how ready they are to step up to the next level of their studies. The findings disclosed that the student's career interest is a significant factor (computed value 14.4) in pursuing their major field of specialization, primarily supported by their career readiness. The more the student is interested in a particular field, the more the student is ready to pursue his dream career. Based on the findings and conclusion, it is suggested that all grade levels should be given a career interest survey and ready to think, prepare, and choose what career path they need to take in the future. As much as possible, parents should also play a significant role in selecting the students' careers so that they can guide their students in what career is best suited for them.

Abstract

State-managed debt has always been a polemic in every country, including Indonesia. Some people's perceptions did not align with the Government's debt policy, including some college students'students' perceptions. Therefore, this study, which is of significant importance, aims to determine the public's understanding, especially college students, of state-managed debt. The Government values the insights of college students, as their perceptions are crucial in shaping public learning regarding debt management. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with five informants outside Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi) in Indonesia. The five informants represent the college student community with different educational backgrounds and genders. Based on the in-depth interviews, the results found that all informants' perceptions described the terminology of state-managed debt sufficiently. Likewise, when they described what the investment was. Despite differences in educational backgrounds, each college student could articulate their perceptions of state-managed debt. The study found that the literature on public finance was still limited. Therefore, this research underscores the potential for growth in public finance literacy among college students, highlighting the crucial and reassuring role of the Government in providing comprehensive lessons and accurate information to the younger generation about the benefits of prudent state-managed debt.

Abstract

In recent years, the unprecedented explosion of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI, has dramatically and drastically altered many human fields, posing queries about how generative AI can imitate human language. Given the newness of generative AI as a controversial phenomenon, there is an urgency to closely examine how its linguistic outputs could mimic human language produced in natural contexts. Hence, in this short report, we discuss the observed similarities and differences in the linguistic features of the subreddit r/Marriage spouse appreciatory posts and ChatGPT-4 outputs. These results were the offshoot of our genre analysis on these two linguistic data sets. Our analysis revealed that ChatGPT-4 generated texts contain impeccable grammar, while the Reddit appreciatory posts have grammatical discrepancies, such as errors in subject-verb agreement, improper punctuation marks, and erroneous capitalization; ChatGPT-4 generated texts have more complex syntactical structure; Reddit dataset utilized more internet jargon, slang, and profanities and seems to be unpredictable and arbitrary in terms of textual length; and ChatGPT-4 outputs appear to overuse emojis while underuse emoticons and tend to use these digital linguistic elements without regard to their proper contexts. In light of these results, we claim that AI-generated texts, although they can mimic human language, this is on a mere surface level, and a closer inspection could uncover distinct variations. We recommend that future studies use more comprehensive and different datasets and continuously employ comparative and contrastive linguistic analysis to further investigate AI’s imitative capabilities.

Abstract

The rapid urbanization of Metro Manila led to a surge in condominium construction projects, which, despite offering efficient housing solutions, faced significant challenges due to dense urban environment, susceptibility to natural disasters & the health and safety issues related to accidents, losses, injuries, damages, and/or delays arising during the execution of a project which may adversely affect its success. This study explored the efficacy of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) in assessing and prioritizing risks specific to Metro Manila's condominium construction projects, addressing a critical gap in current risk assessment methodologies. The study engaged mixed methods, integrating Meta-Analysis, Experts Consultation, and AHP, to identify and prioritize Risk Factors (RFs) in condominium construction projects. A systematic review through meta-analysis revealed nine critical RFs, including Technical/Design, Financial/Economic, Environmental, Regulatory/Legal, Socio-Political, Logistics/Supply Chain, Management/Supervision, Quality, and Health and Safety Risks. Inputs from experts from a diverse group of qualified professionals had been pooled to validate these findings. Through AHP analysis, risks specific to Metro Manila's condominium construction projects were revealed, with Health and Safety Risk (19.52%), Quality Risk (15.97%) and Management/Supervision Risk (15.77%) as the major concerns. An internal consistency of 0.71% attested to the reliability testing of the results. Given the complexity of condominium construction projects, this study responds to an important demand: a more systemic understanding of risk factors. Moreover, this study is relevant to further enhance and improve sustainability in condominium projects as well as performance of the construction industry.

Abstract

Teachers' exhaustion is a prevalent issue that affects their well-being and job performance. It is crucial for educational institutions and policymakers to address these factors and implement strategies to support and prioritize the well-being of teachers. Teaching is a demanding profession that requires high levels of energy and commitment. The study aimed to assess the factors affecting the level of exhaustion of single and married teachers in public schools in Catbalogan City Division. This study utilized a descriptive-correlational research design. Accordingly, "Financial Background”, and "Financial Components” ranked 1st, and 2nd among 7 factors affecting exhaustions to teacher-respondents, thus, the Composite Mean= 3.65 with descriptive interpretation of “Agree.” Further, there was a low positive association between Civil Status, and Years of Teaching; and Level of Exhaustion. Moreover, there was no significant correlation between Civil Status and Level of Exhaustion. The findings suggest a complex interplay between civil status, years of teaching, and levels of exhaustion among educators. While years of teaching experience shows a low positive association with exhaustion, civil status alone does not significantly correlate with exhaustion levels. Future research could further explore the specific contextual factors in Catbalogan City and similar settings to better understand the dynamics of teacher exhaustion. Additionally, longitudinal studies could provide insights into how teachers' experiences of exhaustion evolve over time and the role of coping strategies in mitigating burnout.
