Abstract

Several data from national and international tests have revealed the continued and unfortunate decline in reading proficiency among young Filipinos. Although many studies have already investigated this matter, few have dared to explore how higher levels of basic education are addressing the issue and preparing young Filipinos to be proficient readers for college. Hence, this qualitative research explored the teaching of reading skills at the senior high level and developed a survey questionnaire based on the themes that emerged from the interview data. Participants in the study included 14 teachers from three prominent schools in General Santos City. With a phenomenological approach, the researcher conducted key informant interviews using a developed and validated semi-structured interview schedule. The qualitative findings revealed three main dominant themes namely; the encountered challenges of the teachers, their practice of certain approaches and strategies in teaching reading skills, and their implementation of several intervention and remediation programs. The Dominant themes, emergent themes, subthemes, and codes, were then used as the basis for developing a survey questionnaire that had undergone reliability and validity testing. With the results, the research recommends revisiting the senior high curriculum and including intervention or remediation programs to aid struggling senior high readers and strengthen the reading skills of senior high students in general. Furthermore, the researcher encourages using the developed survey questionnaire to investigate the phenomenon further in a more generalizable population.

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the effects of supplementing the ensiled ficus (EFF) fruit on the growth performance of mallard ducks. One hundred seventy-five (175) day old straight-run mallard ducklings were assigned with the following diets: A (control), B (5% EFF inclusion), C (10% EFF inclusion), D (15% EFF inclusion), and E (20% EFF inclusion) following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with cage location as blocking factor. Data were run in general linear model of SAS v.9.4. TS1M8 and difference among treatments were determined using trend comparison and declared significant at =0.05. Results showed the ensiling can improve the chemical composition of the ficus fruits and make it favorable to mallard ducks when supplemented. The effect of supplementing EFF in mallard ducks showed a general increase in VFI with higher inclusion rate of EFF with comparable BW and WG. However, FCR was a bit higher with ducks given increasing EFF supplement. Lastly, RFCC was also lower in diets with EFF compared to the control group.

Abstract

The issue of animal welfare and the usage of antibiotics resulted in the development of different rearing systems and the use of feed additives as antibiotic alternatives. Cage-free broiler production allows birds to express their normal behavior promoting better welfare of the animal. The study aimed to investigate the growth performance of broiler chickens reared in cages and uncaged with feed additives. A total of 180 COBB broilers were used and randomly distributed into 6 different treatments and replicates following a randomized complete block design. The birds were weighed prior to arrival, 1st week, 2nd week, 3rd week, 4th week, and 5th week to determine the growth performance parameters. Economic analysis was also measured after the end of the study. The data was analyzed using Proc Mixed of SAS v. 9.4, and group comparison was used to evaluate the differences between the control and experimental groups. The result showed significant differences in feed intake at 1st week (p=0.0249) compared to the birds reared in an uncaged system. Feed intake in subsequent weeks and other growth performance parameters showed no significant differences throughout the study. Birds fed with 0.5% activated bamboo charcoal and bentonite clay obtained a higher return on investment than in 1% inclusion. These results imply that uncaged birds have the same growth performance with caged birds and could express their natural behavior at the same time. The result also revealed that better performance and profitability can be achieved at 0.5% inclusion of feed additives in the diet.

Abstract

Today's women are better equipped than ever to carry out all activities required for a dominant portion of a community to be recognized and accepted. Every society needs women more than anything else, but they do not receive much social recognition for their commitment to community development. Although it is generally accepted that men should handle commercial matters, a considerable wage difference between men and women has been established, and independent women are regarded as having significantly less value by society. The study systematically reviewed some pieces of literature on Women Entrepreneurship: A Systematic Review of Current Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities. Women's entrepreneurship. It utilized a pragmatic research philosophy to improve the world by creating and disseminating knowledge. The literature was taken from published, peer-reviewed journals and scientifically written in English. Similarities in women's entrepreneurship were established and quoted difficulties experienced by these entrepreneurs in their endeavors. Furthermore, a few recommendations were cited to address these difficulties; hence, women's entrepreneurial development should be continuously recorded.

Abstract

This transcendental phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of school heads in managing intergenerational diversity among proficient teachers in public elementary schools in Noveleta, Cavite. Through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and document analysis, the study revealed how generational differences impacted school management practices. Seven key themes emerged: Intergenerational Dynamics and Work Culture, Leadership and Adaptive Management Strategies, Technological Evolution and Pedagogical Adaptation, Communication, Collaboration, and Team Cohesion, Coping with Change and Navigating Resistance, Personal Well-being and Professional Growth, and Cultural and Societal Influences. The findings highlighted that school heads faced distinct challenges when managing generational gaps in work ethics, discipline, and professional values. Older generations of teachers, such as Baby Boomers and Generation X, exhibited stronger work ethics and commitment, often working through breaks to ensure student learning. In contrast, younger generations, particularly Generation Y and Z, were perceived to prioritize work-life balance and demonstrated less initiative. These differences posed significant challenges in fostering collaboration and innovation within schools. School heads employed adaptive strategies, such as empathetic leadership, fostering open communication, and promoting flexible solutions to bridge these generational divides. Moreover, the study emphasized the need for school management to address stereotypes and biases associated with different generations, creating inclusive environments that promoted cohesion and mutual respect. The implications extended to educational policies and professional development programs aimed at fostering intergenerational understanding and improving staff relations.
