Abstract

Due to the limited number of registered guidance counselors (RGCs) in the Philippines, public high schools are compelled to appoint classroom teachers as guidance advocates and perform the duties and responsibilities of an RGC, specifically facilitating counseling to learners. With their lack of training and fundamental knowledge, differing orientations, and demanding and overlapping work as classroom teachers and at the same time as guidance advocates, the participants are having difficulty practicing one of the ethical codes in the counseling profession – ethical bracketing; thus, its delivery is put to jeopardy. This study used descriptive phenomenological analysis to explore the lived experiences of guidance advocates on their practice of ethical bracketing in facilitating counseling services. Data were collected via unstructured in-depth interviews and analyzed using Lichtman’s three (3) C’s of Data Analysis, retaining only relevant themes: predicaments in ethical bracketing, factors for good ethical bracketing, transformation through counseling experiences, and counseling practice as a calling. The participants did not just overcome the challenges they had faced in practice but experienced transformations that significantly impacted their perspective about themselves, their counselees, and the counseling profession. The findings of this study serve as baseline information in creating a training program that can address the concerns of the guidance advocates on their practice of ethical bracketing in facilitating counseling services.

Abstract

Innovation, being one of the initiatives of the UAE, has been mandated to be promoted and cultivated in all government sectors including education. In response to the mandate, schools incorporated innovation into their system and operation. Al Salam Private School, in its existence for more than 30 years, has made a lot of innovative steps to address the call and demands of the time. The culture of innovation in Al Salam Private School may already be existing, but in order to know how to move forward, an assessment was made to determine the perception of the staff. The Six Building Blocks of an Innovative Culture instrument of Rao and Weintraub (2013) was modified to suit and fit the need of the survey. The survey revealed that overall, the culture of innovation in Al Salam Private School is to a great extent. Specifically, the culture of innovation in terms of values, behaviors, climate, and processes are to a great extent while resources and success are to a moderate extent. The focus areas derived from the three least rated elements in the survey are: having good incentive systems which recognize and reward innovation, rewarding people for participating in potentially risky opportunities, irrespective of the outcome, and having inspiring physical spaces for staff to collaborate, be creative and engage in innovative practice. Three emerging themes were extracted from the interview with the key informants, and these are incentives and recognition, risk-taking activities, and collaborative and inspiring space. These themes were consistent with the focus areas derived from the survey. From the integration of the quantitative and qualitative analysis, an eidetic model of the culture of innovation was developed. The three pillars of the model served as the key priority areas in the crafting of the Innovation Plan.

Abstract

The world has been shaken by the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in a dramatic loss of human life and poses an unprecedented challenge to almost all aspects of life, and the Philippines has not been an exception to these challenges. As a result, this deadly situation has flipped the offline teaching process and paved the way towards online-based teaching. This study was conducted to determine the perceptions and experiences of teachers in the remote areas towards online teaching. This study employed a cross-sectional explanatory research design and the analyses reveal that respondents with "high" technological proficiency are more likely to have a "positive" attitude toward online education whereas respondents with "poor" technological skills are more likely to have a "negative" attitude toward online learning. This strongly suggest that educational leaders may venture on training teachers on how to develop their technological knowledge and skills since it has a significant impact to their attitude towards online teaching. Moreover, further analysis also reveals that the relationship between teacher-respondents’ perceptions towards online teaching and their technological knowledge and skills was statistically significant. It is also recommended that training in online teaching needs to be provided to teachers to widen their understanding of online teaching.

Abstract

Learning complicated topics in Physics is one of the most challenging tasks students experi-ence in the classroom. Physics teachers use supplementary materials and laboratory exercises to help students visualize and imagine what they are studying in order to better understand the topics. These learning aids, however, are sometimes not sufficient. Students would still struggle to learn due to lack of effective teaching materials. Without effective teaching materials, it is impossible to master Physics concepts. The study focused on developing and evaluating a learning resource package in Optics for Grade 10 Science. The results showed that the resource package will provide an effective and alternative method for students to be exposed to the scientific method and to explore and observe what the beauty of physics does in our lives. These are very helpful for teachers when teaching Physics concepts. Furthermore, because the learning resource package is already complete, the teacher may feel more prepared to teach optics classes. It is recommended that teacher-writers create lessons that are similar to those already used in science classrooms which may directly address the needs of students.
