Abstract

COVID-19 has transformed education delivery and doubled the challenges of learners with special needs (LSENs) due to inaccessible assistive technologies and limited face-to-face interaction with special education teachers. Consequently, their parents were forced to teach without formal training (World bank, 2020). Thus, this sequential mixed method study aimed to improve the learners' selected Life Science competencies in animal reproduction, genetic engineering, animal survival, and evolution through Parent-Assisted Learning Plan (PALP). The PALP is a 3-week home instruction cycle introduced to the participants where the teacher who created the self-learning modules met one-on-one with the home learning facilitators (HLFs) to discuss the various concepts covered in the modules emphasizing real-world applications and demonstrating strategies in teaching the concepts to the participants at home. Six Grade 11 LSENs from Ferdinand E. Marcos Senior High School participated in this study. The data came from validated 50-item teacher-created tests and focus group discussions. Frequency, percentage, means, and t-test was used to analyse quantitative data, while thematic analysis was applied for qualitative data. The t-test results show that PALP effectively improves learners' selected Life Science competencies. However, the participants also faced problems, including the difficulty of lessons, poor information retention, and a lack of formal sign language training among home learning facilitators. It is then recommended that schools may adopt and implement the PALP to help LSENs cope with the new learning delivery.

Abstract

The 2013 curriculum is oriented toward 21st-century competencies by deploying technology in learning. 21st Century skills hold predominant roles in education. Cognitive skills, critical thinking, creative thinking, metacognitive, perseverance, confidence, solving problem skills, social skills, collaboration, and communication fall under the 21st Century skills. Argumentation skills are important to educators, especially in critical thinking and being able to express opinions or arguments based on data and facts. Learners are required to make decisions on the basis of logical and reasonable information. In improving argumentation skills, a suitable learning model is required, namely Discovery Learning. Discovery learning occurs in problem-solving situations in which learners engage their existing experience and knowledge to discover meaningful new facts, relationships, and truths. As such, Discovery Learning can help learners to improve argumentation skills based on data and facts.

Abstract

The increased awareness of the value of physical activity by introducing sports and games in the Physical Education curriculum of special education (SPED) schools in the Philippines has been both a trend and a challenge in program planning, implementation, assessment, and professional background of teachers. To evaluate the benefits of learners’ participation in physical activity, this study, therefore, measured and evaluated the health-related physical fitness status of learners in an educational institution for the visually impaired in the Philippines. The health-related physical fitness levels of blind or braille user learners (N = 12) were measured utilizing the following standardized tests: body mass index (BMI); modified sit and reach and zipper tests (flexibility); vertical jump test (power); four-level sit-ups (core strength); and 3-minute step test (cardiorespiratory endurance). Overall results revealed that the participants’ health-related physical fitness levels were below normative standards for fitness. Interviews among the special education teachers of the institution also revealed that their minimal training on fitness testing and physical activity programming, including the scarcity of materials and equipment, emerged as common problems encountered by them as far as fitness is concerned. Given the proper training on the conduct and monitoring of physical fitness tests and the facilitation of physical activity-related programs, special education teachers will be able to address the children’s needs in physical activity, fitness, and leisure programs. The results of the study will serve as inputs toward the development of a comprehensive fitness and leisure program, especially in SPED schools.

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the liquidity issues and profitability index of small-scale businesses operating in the Second District of Sorsogon Province, Philippines as well as to establish the relationship of these two variables. This study used mixed design. A total of 223 small-scale business owners engaged in trading in the Second District of Sorsogon Province, Philippines were the primary respondents of this research. Vertical analyses and stepwise linear regression analyses were utilized. This study concludes that small-scale business entities in the Province of Sorsogon are highly liquid and profitable depicting their ability to pay short-term maturing obligation. Limited and unavailability of capitalization, Absence of Credit Policy, High Finance cost for debt financing, Inventory obsolescence, Shortage of resources and Lack of markets of measure and scope are the identified liquidity issues by small-scale business owners. To address the issues, the Use equity financing than debt financing, Strengthen the company’s policy of extending loan, Minimize the purchase of inventory or stocks, financial suffering by staying well-informed of your finances and Hiring Bookkeepers are highly recommended by the respondents.

Abstract

The study looked into the various significant financial challenges faced by business administration students of one of Dumaguete City's state colleges. Corollary to this objective, their current financial practices were also examined. Information from 308 respondents was gathered using a quantitative research method using Cochran’s approach and convenience sampling technique was used in the study. A self-administered questionnaire was used. And several published research articles influenced the development of the instrument. The data was evaluated using weighted mean and ranking. The findings revealed that the two most common financial challenges students had grappled with throughout their moderately difficult college years were obtaining a part-time job to supplement their parent-financed school allowance and not being able to purchase internet data to attend online classes. One of the students' major financial practices is to save as much money as possible, markedly considered as highly practiced in the study. Business administration students were moderately challenged by the recognized elements of financial challenges while being slightly practiced as described under Financial Challenges. Students are good at saving money and not buying things (that may pose a financial risk), in addition to working part-time. Further, the study suggested that the school administration conceive and implement a comprehensive financial education, elevate the level of students’ financial quotient by embedding financial courses in the curricula of programs, and consistently provide a series of seminars and workshops on the subject. Conducting pre-program and mid-program surveys may also determine the effectiveness of the program.

Abstract

Electricity and magnetism are known as an important topics in the physics and scientific curriculum at all levels, including elementary, secondary, and tertiary. Children can learn more about electricity and magnetism via discussion and activities. Electricity and magnetism also have applications in many aspects of our daily life as one of the fundamental areas and key concerns in physics. Traditional teaching methods are considered ineffective. Pupils who were taught using traditional methods or approaches, according to Jelicic et al. (2017), have a poor comprehension of basic electromagnetic principles and are often resistant to teachers' instruction and our education now is dependent on technology. In this review, the different alternative teaching methods used and preferred by other schools are being examined and its effect in teaching Electricity and Magnetism. The included studies in this literature review proved that the preferred teaching method to motivate and appreciate the importance of learning Electricity and Magnetism. Hence, students learn more through understanding concepts and the performance of things through active participation.

Abstract

Physics is a theoretical science, understanding the concepts requires actual visual representations and models. Physics instructors should teach physics using inquiry, discovery, demonstration, simulation, practical work, lab-based activities, and other practical experiences. The current status of knowledge and practice regarding interactive simulation in the teaching of modern physics is presented in this systematic literature review. By methodically evaluating and summarizing the most pertinent previous research publications published from December 2002 to January 2022, it offers guidance for instructional designers and scholars. After careful consideration and screening, a total of eleven studies were chosen for a thorough analysis and synthesis. The results showed that the objective of the research studies on using interactive simulation in modern physics is to enhance students' critical thinking skills and creative problem-solving skills. It has been demonstrated that interactive simulation technologies like Java applets and Physics Education Technology (PhET) are successful at teaching modern physics. The success or failure of employing interactive simulation is influenced by teachers, school staff, students, simulation design, and technology used. The findings imply that educational institutions should provide teachers and administrators with tutorials and training, and this review recommend that the interactive simulation should be available and that a gadget-friendly simulation must be developed.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only created such a massive impact on health but has also drastically transformed the global educational landscape, and with the World Health Organization (WHO) predicting the pandemic to last beyond 2021, Higher Education Institutions across the country resort to various pedagogical methodologies to ensure the continuous delivery of instruction amidst the pandemic, including the use of Open Educational Resources (OER). OER have been widely used in the Marinduque State College since the implementation of remote learning modality in the institution. Given that this is the first semester that these materials have been widely-used in the college, this study sought to determine the perceptions of students on OER being used for their major courses, particularly for English Language Studies (ELS). This mixed method study considered the 2nd year BA-ELS students as participants, and the necessary data was gathered through a Google Forms survey questionnaire. This paper also aimed to determine perceptions of the participants on the learning materials being used for their English Phonology and Morphology course in terms of content, organization & presentation, and accessibility. Results reveal that participants have a general positive perception with OER in terms of content and organization & presentation. However, participants seem to struggle with its accessibility, as the materials are published on platforms that require internet access.

Abstract

This study primarily aimed to accomplished four basic objectives, which are: determine the company profiles of tourism businesses at selected towns in Batangas; evaluate the level of effectiveness of the operating management practices of tourism companies in terms of the human resource, marketing and financial management; examine the level of their financial performance in terms of sales growth and profitability; and, find the significant correlation in the respondent’s assessment on the effectiveness of the operational management practices and financial performance of the tourism companies. This study employed the descriptive survey research method that engaged 270 proprietors and managers of different tourism enterprises across the province of Batangas. Convenient sampling technique was used and Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) to process the data. The researcher utilized Frequency and Percentage Distribution, Weighted Mean and Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The study revealed that most tourism businesses in selected towns in Batangas belong to Sun and Beach Tourism. Majority are sole proprietorship, with less than three million capitalizations. Years in business operation are mostly 1 to 5 years, with more than 20 employees. Findings illustrate that the majority of tourism businesses of Batangas gave more importance on certain aspects of operational management over the others. For financial management, financial control has been prioritized over financial planning. Marketing management is assessed as one of the most essential aspects of business operation. The study found a very weak to weak correlation in Human Resource, Financial and Marketing Management vs. Sales Revenue Growth and Profitability Growth.

Abstract

Advertisements have been an effective tool used to promote a product or service. It can also be considered as a way to shape the mind and the culture of society. Hence, this study determined the linguistic elements and analyzed different types of sexism through language in Philippine television advertisements. The study used qualitative approach to research and utilized a validated self-made research instrument which served as the primary tool of the study. The study identified the linguistic elements present in Philippine television advertisements in terms of its lexical and syntactical feature and analyzed the types of sexism through language in Philippine advertisements. The study revealed that the commonly used lexical feature of advertisements is simple vocabulary; meanwhile for syntactic feature, the most common is ambiguity and the use of imperative. It is also found that advertisements can be used as a sexism platform in the Philippines. Moreover, the way these elements are used or depicted along with the portrayal of men and women in the advertisements may influence the audience’s perception and understanding of what they have seen thus, the audio-video material as output of this study may serve as a tool to liberate the minds of the viewing public.
