Abstract

The abolition of in-person teaching and learning activities policy at universities due to the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in a rapid transition from offline to online teaching and learning process. The inequality of internet networks in Indonesia makes this a challenge for lecturers and students. Academic Writing is also admitted by students as hard material. Hence, this study aims to analyze how the implementation of online learning in the Academic Writing course at the English Department of FKIP UIR. The instruments were an online questionnaire and structured interviews for students and the lecturer. The findings of this study found that the implementation of online learning in the Academic Writing course was held synchronously and asynchronously. Various online platforms support the teaching and learning process. However, many students have struggled with bad internet connections, were enabled to focus during the study, and have difficulty understanding materials.

Abstract

This research aims to determine students’ engagement levels and factors in attending ESP online courses during the Covid-19 pandemic. In performing data and data analysis, a qualitative research design was employed with the interpretation of descriptive statistics. This research distributed a questionnaire to 59 students in the nursing department. The research findings showed that four dimensions of students’ engagements got a means score in the level of "Agree"; skills engagement with 4.18, participation/interaction engagement with 3.99, emotional engagement with 3.88, and performance engagement with 3.86. For factors influencing students' engagement, all factors consisting of direct and indirect factors got a means score of "Strongly Agree" as 4.38. The findings showed that the students were engaged in an ESP online course. Both direct and indirect factors influence students’ engagement including learning resources, teaching competency, knowledge base, learning style, teaching context, social network, and technology.

Abstract

This study focuses on the Synchronous and Asynchronous learning methods used in terms of the perceptions that apply. Where this research will be more emphasize whether the perceptions generated by students in using Synchronous and Asynchronous learning methods from the evaluation results during learning and the knowledge gained. In this case, an analysis of students' perceptions of the material aspect, activeness during learning, learning motivation, and quality of dialogue during online learning was carried out using asynchronous and asynchronous methods. The results obtained from the questionnaire that distributed, the 4 factors measured turned out to all get good results from the student's perception that it is obtained from Synchronous and Asynchronous learning methods and the respondents stated strongly agree that these methods get results that are not much of differences.

Abstract

TOEFL as one type of test is commonly used to measure learners’ English proficiency. TOEFL consist of reading comprehension, listening, structure and written expression. However learners got difficulties to do reading section, especially in reading scientific text due to its condensed information and different terms with general English. The aim of this research was to find out EFL learners’ ability in reading scientific text of TOEFL. Descriptive quantitative method was applied to the research. The subject of the research was 8 learners of the fourth semester of 2019/2020 academic year STIBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. The instrument used to collect the data was reading test in the form of multiple choice tests. The data were analysed by using descriptive statistics to find the level of learners’ ability in reading scientific text in TOEFL. From the finding, it was found EFL learners individual score average was 79. The highest score was in previewing and the lowest score was in making inferences and identifying exception. In brief, it could be concluded that EFL learners’ ability in reading scientific text were in intermediate category.

Abstract

In this pandemic COVID-19, students were required to use internet in all of the activities in order to limit the face to face interaction. Students just stay at home and do online school by used internet. In internet, majority of the contents used English. Students who used internet got a lot of exposure to English vocabulary. In this research, researcher found some problem such as: there were some students used internet but their vocabulary still limited, and there were some students used internet and them had many vocabulary. In other hand, there were some students mastery vocabulary they easy to understand of point in internet. So researcher wanted to know was there correlation between students’ internet activity frequency and their vocabulary size. The researcher used the quantitative research. The design of this research was correlational research because it had the purpose to find out correlation between internet activity frequency and vocabulary size. The population in this research was 108 students that were the total of the students in the seventh semester in IAIN Bukittinggi. Researcher took 30% from population as sample of this research which was 33 students. To collect the data, this study used questioners and test. Based on the finding there was significant correlation between internet activities frequency and vocabulary size since sig values is smaller than alpha (0,0000010,3440). This means that the students’ internet frequency activity correlate with their vocabulary size. Second, there was positive correlation between both variables (+0.730). In other word, the more students have activity in the internet the better their vocabulary size. Third, the magnitude of the correlation was high (between 0.71—0.90). This means the more students use internet the more they are exposed to the English language since the Internet use English in majority, so that the students’ vocabulary size would improve. So if students frequent used internet, so their vocabulary will improve.

Abstract

This study aims to determine teachers' beliefs in conveying communicative EFL teaching during the pandemic. The current research is ground by the restrictions in the form of learning hours and other factors on distance learning that affect the communicative teaching principles which is usually occur in offline class. Therefore, it is important to understand teachers' beliefs by understanding how teachers overcome the limitations related to the speaking practices and language skills of students in online learning. A qualitative narrative inquiry research design will be use as relevant method for this study. This research design enabled the researchers to gather data into a descriptive data analysis. The data will obtain firstly by describing the three EFL teachers’ interaction with learners in speaking online class, then explores the teachers' beliefs about speaking practice in interviews. In addition, undemandings questionnaires is also necessary to engage as effective secondary data to strengthen primary data. Thematic analysis is requiring for this study to identified, analysed, and coded participants' responses to voice their beliefs. These findings provide an opportunity to understand the potential role of beliefs in shaping communicative online learning. This investigation tracked down that talking practice is molded by different convictions held by educators, not just identified with their need to apply an informative learning, yet in addition the significance of showing language and different viable obstructions in internet learning classes.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to know and describe the effect of the guessing game technique on students’ vocabulary knowledge at the seventh grade of a state Islamic Junior High School (MTsN). This study applied a quantitative method and a quasi-experimental design. The samples of the study were chosen using the purposive sampling technique with a total number of 63 students. There were two classes consist of the Experimental class and the controlled class. The experimental class was taught by using the guessing game technique while the controlled class was taught by listening to the teacher’s explanation on the textbook’s material and doing assignments. The data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests and analyzed using a t-test. The result of the pre-test showed that the mean score of the experimental class was 57.9 and the controlled class was 68.54. However, after being given guessing game treatment, the experimental class mean score increased up to 78.4 while the controlled class mean score was 70.93. It means that Ha was accepted. In addition, the effect size was 1.0 (moderate effect). Therefore, it can be concluded that there was a significant effect of using the guessing game technique on students’ vocabulary knowledge at the Seventh Grade of a state Islamic Junior High School (MTsN) .Keywords: Vocabulary, Knowledge student of Islamic School, Guessing game

Abstract

The researcher conducted this study to reveal what factors were dominantly influencing the problem. The descriptive quantitative research used a total sampling technique which collects data through questionnaire. After collecting data from the questionnaire, the researchers identified the dominant factors that affect the English language skills of second grade students with a high average percentage. Based on the results of the study, it is shown that of the two factors that affect students' achievement in learning English, external factors are known with results (55.90%) and internal factors with results (54.40%).  The dominant factor influencing the achievement of learning English in which the dominant is the external factor, namely the student's environmental factor, which was chosen by the respondents as much as 55.90%.  Thus, it is concluded that external factors have a dominant influence on English learning achievement.

Abstract

This study focuses on the effect of the GIST strategy on the reading comprehension of SMK Sinar Husni BM Labuhan Deli students. This study aims to find ways to improve students' reading comprehension through basic strategies. Lack of student knowledge of what the text says about it. The design of experiments was used in this study. The author taught two different classes at SMK Sinar Husni BM Labuhan Deli. They were a control class and an experimental class. The population of this study is 50 students consisting of two classes. Data is collected through reading comprehension tests. The author uses two tests. There are pre-test and post-test. By using the experimentally guided GIST strategy, the reading comprehension of the students after treatment was improved. The results of this study show that The Effect of GIST Strategy in Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of using poster media on students' speaking skills at the H. Muhammad Djana Lubis Islamic Boarding School Modern Islamic School Foundation, Cubadak. This research using poster media is expected to provide benefits to teachers and students in carrying out teaching and learning activities, especially in improving Arabic speaking skills. The method used in this research is an experimental method using two class groups. One class as the experimental class and one class for the control. the researcher delivered the learning material using poster media in the experimental class, while in the control class where the learning material was delivered by the lecture method. Based on the results of the analysis in the previous discussion, it was stated that the students' scores in the experimental class were superior to the control class. The average score obtained by students in the experimental class using poster media is 85.5 and the average score in the control class without the latest media assistance is 80.5. Using poster as media has significant effect on the students’ Arabic speaking skill.
