Abstract

Translation problems may arise because of cultural differences in movie subtitles. Thus, subtitling strategies have become important for translating social and cultural information. This study aims to identify the social cultural words using Newmarks’s (1988) theory and to investigate the subtitling strategies employed by the translators using Pedersen’s (2011) theory. The data used in this research are cultural words in Indonesian subtitles and English subtitles in the movie Bumi Manusia. Moreover, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. As a result, the researcher found that there were 166 social culture words found in the movie, which were work, name, terms of address, kinship, and leisure terms. The result revealed that the most frequent cultural-related terms of the social cultural words are names of a person with 34% of data. Furthermore, this study found that the translator employed seven subtitling strategies when translating cultural words, which were official equivalent (39%), retention (37%), substitution (14%), direct translation (4%), generalization (4%), omission (2%), and specification (1%). It can be concluded that the official equivalent is the dominant strategy applied by the translator, followed by retention.

Parents play an important role in the character-shaping of their children, and it is mostly processed during the parent-child interaction. Children can be deeply influenced at home in terms of mother tongue, ideology, habit, or personal behavior. Hence, parent-child reading activity has been used as a popular mode that offers an opportunity to affect children purposely. However, many parents are confused about the way to interact with their children, either verbally or not. This study tries to look into this problem by observing a real case. The conversation between a parent and a child is audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. The result shows that equal power distribution can be found in this particular case, and there are two identities that the child can find herself, i.e., teacher and student. In addition, the mother adopts a number of strategies to help fulfil her expectation, such as reading material selection, teaching ideological lessons, child’s language development, evoking imagination, and praising strategy. The findings may provide implications for parents who are confused about how to interact with their children properly and effectively.

Abstract

One of the texts with nuanced meanings is an advertisement. When discussing how to effectively convey messages in advertisements, the complexity of meaning encompasses both written and visual components. In order to understand the power and meaning of a text that contains multiple modes, such as verbal, visual, and aural, a multimodal analysis of an advertisement is necessary in order to understand the complexities of meaning. The research aims to examine the multimodal resources in the Tokopedia X BTS advertisement on YouTube based on five semiotic multimodal systems proposed by Anstey & Bull (2018). This research employs a qualitative method and a descriptive approach. The data were taken in the form of an image that was taken from a screenshot of the Tokopedia advertisement. The result shows that there are five aspects of the multimodal system contained in this advertisement, namely linguistic, visual, audio, gestural, and spatial. These five aspects are mutually sustainable to convey messages from the Tokopedia application and also advertise and introduce this sophisticated application.

Abstract

The article begins by highlighting the importance of language as a means of communication and the significance of studying the relationship between language and context. It also discusses the relevance of analyzing speech acts in understanding the intended meaning behind utterances. Previous studies on speech acts in Hemingway's works are mentioned, focusing on locution, illocution, and perlocution, or the form and meaning of speech acts. The research methodology employed in this study is descriptive-qualitative, involving the analysis of dialogue fragments from the short story. The data collection technique involves extracting relevant conversations from the story and categorizing them based on the speaker, hearer, topic, and setting. The analysis includes identifying the types of speech acts used, exploring their possible meanings, classifying them into five general functions (assertives, commissives, directives, expressives, and declaratives), and categorizing them based on sentence structure (declarative, interrogative, imperative, or exclamative). The findings and discussions section presents several examples of speech acts found in the short story, describing the locution, illocution, perlocution, and classifications of each speech act. The results demonstrate the diverse range of speech acts employed by the characters in "The Killers" and their impact on communication within the narrative.
