Abstract

Over the past 20 years, halal standards promoted by Muslim-majority countries have become increasingly stringent. This movement, which began in Southeast Asia, has extended to the Middle East, and efforts are underway to establish these stringent standards as international norms. Consequently, in Muslim-minority countries like Japan, it has become difficult to manufacture halal products in regular facilities, making it challenging to provide necessary services to Muslim consumers. Additionally, the lack of information regarding changes in alcohol standards poses a problem. International halal standards have also reclassified certain seasonings from non-Muslim regions, previously considered halal by local Muslims, as non-halal. This paper focuses on Indonesia's halal certification standards and system, examines the current state of halal compliance in Japan, and explores the relationship between the two. It aims to discuss the necessary reforms for halal standards and certification systems in the global era.

Abstract

This research discusses Qatar's role in the Nusantara spice trade route using the book "Qaṭar fī ‘Uyūn al-Rahhālah" by Ali Bin Ghanem Al-Hajri as the primary source. According to Al-Hajri, Qatar serves as a crucial transit center in the spice trade, receiving ships from the Far East and distributing their goods to various regions. Although Qatar does not produce these spices, the country plays a vital role in the trading network. This study also compares the maritime trade routes described by Al-Hajri with the records of Ibn Majid, while highlighting the role of Arab traders in the history of spice trade. By considering these historical records, this research provides valuable insights into Qatar's relationship with spice trade and the Southeast Asian region, particularly the Nusantara.

Abstract

This paper critically examines existing research on santri diplomacy, focusing on its development, challenges, and unique characteristics in China. While Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah lead santri diplomacy efforts globally, in China, individual santri figures have gained influence through social media. Due to China’ s regulations on religious activities, santri diplomacy in China primarily functions as cultural rather than faith-based diplomacy, focusing on enhancing Indonesia’s image and fostering mutual understanding. Furthermore, santri often engage in reverse advocacy, clarifying misconceptions about China’s religious landscape to Indonesian Muslims. As China-Indonesia ties deepen, the importance of santri diplomacy will grow, necessitating the empowerment of Islamic organizations and figures in China to foster more effective people-to-people exchanges.

Abstract

This article discusses about criticism of the argument for establishing a caliphate for Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) with analysis of hadith in the interpretation of bi ar-riwāyah. The Khilafah aims to enforce Islamic law. There are several groups or mass organizations that are trying to implement the caliphate. One group in Indonesia is Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia. They are of the opinion that any state system cannot be accepted or even called infidel if it is not based on the Koran and Hadith. There is a lot of research on the caliphate, such as discussing the caliphate historically, or referring to classical and contemporary tafsir books. Likewise with the discussion of takhrīj, quite a few studies discuss takhrīj or hadith analysis. In this study, researchers analyzed the hadiths in the tafsir bi ar-riwāyah or more precisely Tafsīr Al-Qur`Ān Al-‘Aẓīm by Ibn Abī Ḥātim. This research is limited to verses that are understood as arguments for upholding the concept of the caliphate, namely QS. Āli ‘Imrān [3]: 110, QS. al-Mā`idah [5]: 44 and QS. al-Mā`idah [5]: 48. This research is “Library Research” using qualitative methods. The approach used is the takhrīj hadith approach. In the analysis of takhrīj hadith, the author starts by bringing in hadith from other sources if there are other sources. Then the writer examines the narrators of the sanad (criticism of sanad) and explains the meaning of the hadith (syarh hadith) along with the law (quality) of the sanad. From this research, we can find out the source and quality of the hadiths as well as explanations of these hadiths, so that there is no mistake in understanding the hadith text. After research, there were several narrations (sanad) that were invalid because there were problematic narrators. Of the 8 historical texts, 5 of them have the quality of sanad daīf and the remaining 3 are ḥasan. Of the various words of the caliphate in the Koran, there is no word that discusses and requires the caliphate. Key words: Khilafah, Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, Tafsir Ibn Abī Ḥātim.

Abstract

This research explores Qatar’s strategic role in the spice trade route connecting the Nusantara (Southeast Asia) to the wider Islamic and global maritime world. Using Qaṭar fī ‘Uyūn al-Rahhālah by Ali Bin Ghanem Al-Hajri as the primary source, the study highlights Qatar not as a spice-producing region, but as a critical hub in the transcontinental exchange. According to Al-Hajri, Qatar functioned as a transit center where ships from the Far East, including those from the Malay Archipelago, would dock and unload valuable commodities such as spices, which were then redistributed to markets across the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. In addition to Al-Hajri’s account, this research also draws on the maritime records of the renowned Arab navigator Ibn Majid. A comparative analysis between these two sources reveals overlapping patterns and shared understandings of the spice route. Arab traders, particularly those sailing the Indian Ocean, played a pivotal role in connecting the Nusantara with the Arabian Peninsula.By situating Qatar within this expansive historical and commercial context, the study contributes to the broader understanding of transregional trade networks. It sheds light on Qatar’s position not only as a passive recipient but as an active intermediary that facilitated intercultural and economic exchanges between East and West. Through this lens, the spice trade emerges not merely as a matter of goods, but as a conduit of civilizational contact—where Arab merchants and Southeast Asian cultures met, exchanged, and co-evolved.

Abstract

Not much effort has been made to explore Bima as a historical node within the framework of Islamic epistemology in Nusantara. In fact, the area that was formerly known as the Bima Kingdom became one of the important trading ports that connected the spice shipping routes to the east of the Nusantara. Because of its strategic location and its significance in the connection point of spice shipping in the Nusantara, Bima in the end can not only be read as an economic reality, but also a cultural reality which is a reflection, for example, how religion and politics are dialectic and bargain each other. The book “Iman dan Diplomasi: Serpihan Sejarah Kerajaan Bima” is one that seeks to reveal how this dynamic took place. Through a review of three important scripts, the book describes several important historical facts, not only related to the Bima Kingdom in particular, but also the big agenda of consolidating Islam as a doctrine with factual reality that occurred in the Nusantara from the 18th to 19th centuries.

Abstract

Studies on Southeast Asian Islam tend to analyze the culture of landed population rather than ocean and littoral-based dwellers. When in fact, the ocean landscape is more extensive and its culture has harbored many dramatic events in the course of human history. Through oceans and their surrounding places of cultural formation, Islam has grown and developed with local cultures in the mutual relation. This study attempts to identify manifestations of Islam among Southeast Asian seafarers Muslim of archipelago in their daily life and historical context. By investigating the experience of Eastern Indonesian seafarers such as the Bugis, Makasar, Mandar, Buton and Bajo people who have interacted with ocean life extensively, this study probes the process of Islamization and identifies the various ideas, practices, meanings and world-views of the Sea People in forging Islam and their culture. Based on the experience of Muslim agents who had a strong maritime ethos and focus on trade and proselytization in playing their social role, Islam and maritime culture have seemingly constituted two good relations to each other. The different reception and negotiation of Islam in maritime culture among Nusantara ethnic groups is interesting to analyze and help to conceptualize ‘Maritime Islam’ which has not been sufficiently studied by scholars to date. By combining secondary sources and field findings, this study explores the world-view of Nusantara Muslims and underscores the fact that Islam is not a single entity, but a plural and diverse phenomena.

Abstract

The Shi’a in Singapore are imbued with the local political culture of striving towards religious harmony. The Ismailis, being the oldest Shi’i community in Singapore, had to go through Singapore’s nation-building phase while the Imamis who precipitated after the Iranian revolution already had the building blocks of peaceful relations and may benefit from contemporary laws regarding religious harmony. The misconceived irreconcilability between the two has often been used as an explanation of the region’s turmoil, whenever both communities are involved. This is unsurprising as Sunni-Shi’a “hatred” manifested in the Syrian conflict that started in 2011, the Yemeni civil war that began in 2014, and not to forget the historical sectarian violence that had been going on in the region. Singapore has a unique religio-political setting of religious freedom and harmony. The type of faith-politics that Singapore has is pluralistic to the extent that the laws allow for it and because Singapore’s political culture of faith is free and harmony-seeking. The only impediment to intra-faith harmony between the Sunnis and Shi’a in Singapore is the intrusion of external political sentiments into the local political culture of faith, through the globalisation of religious ideas and ideology. The type of relations between Sunnis and Shi’a in Singapore has been historically peaceful, situated in the larger secular-pluralistic type of politics of faith in Singapore. When political matters of the Middle East are set aside or have no relevance, Sunnis and Shi’a in Singapore are able to live not just in tolerance of each other, but also harmoniously participating in the larger Singapore society.
