Abstract

The challenges of Nigeria as a nation require holistic approach and appropriate education to tackle for socio-economic development and peaceful co-existence of Nigerians. Adult learning and education (ALE) being a discipline with huge potentials for adults, is capable of tackling the problems. However, it needed to be scaled up through new initiatives and approaches. This study therefore, assessed the funding approach to ALE programmes in Ekiti State, Nigeria; with a view to understand how ALE programmes have been funded and implemented in Nigeria in recent times. Review of concepts and terms were carried out. Qualitative research method was used to obtain data. It was discovered that Ekiti state Government adopted specific need and service-oriented approach to funding and implementation of adult learning and education programmes in the State. The approach yielded positive results with 67 adult literacy centres established and 5,029 adult learners enrolled between 2019 and 2022. A total of 45 individuals and 12 faith based organisations sponsored ALE programmes. It is therefore recommended that government at all levels should adopt need and service-oriented approach to funding and implementation of ALE programmes with a view to make ALE relevant in providing solution to the Nigeria’s socio-economic, political, environmental and security challenges.

Abstract

The study examines the interconnectedness of assessment strategies, instructional resources, and science course teaching methods relating to employability skills acquisition by potential science graduates from the lecturers’ perspective. The study utilised a research survey design. A sample of 371 was drawn from the population of science lecturers in universities in South-west using a multi-stage sampling technique. This involved purposive, stratified, and quota sampling techniques. A well-structured questionnaire was used to collect data analysed using descriptive statistics (multiple bar charts) and inferential statistics of correlation and regression analyses. The key findings of the study showed that instructional resources [instructional material, physical facilities, and human resources], science course teaching methods, and assessment strategies had joint significant predictions on employability skills acquisition. This implies that these variables must be adequately provided for improved acquisition of employability skills by students. Also, lecturers’ understanding of students’ key employability skills revealed low ratings of information technology, initiative, leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability skills of students. The study recommends that higher education administrators should strive to provide instructional materials, physical facilities and human resources as instructional resources to implement excellent teaching techniques and assessment strategies. The study concludes that lecturers should consciously seek self-upgrade and improve teaching techniques and assessment strategies.

Abstract

This study explores the influence of parental involvement on the character development of elementary school-aged children, focusing on how different forms of parental engagement shape positive character traits. Utilizing a literature review methodology, this research synthesizes and analyzes empirical studies to provide a comprehensive understanding of the connection between parental involvement and children's character formation at this crucial developmental stage. Findings indicate that parental involvement plays a pivotal role in shaping children's character. Positive engagement from parents correlates with enhanced character development, while insufficient or negative involvement tends to impede the growth of positive character traits. The study underscores that the development of children's character is a collaborative endeavor involving parents, schools, and the wider community, highlighting the importance of a united approach in nurturing well-rounded individuals.

Abstract

This study investigated the preferences and use patterns of e-books among postgraduate students at Prince Abubakar Audu University. Four (4) research objectives guided the conduct of this study. A descriptive survey method was used for the study and a questionnaire was used for data collection. Statistical tools used for this analysis were frequency counts, simple percentages, and mean scores. The study concludes that eBooks are highly valued by postgraduate students, due to their ability to enhance productivity and effective learning. The ease of use and clear graphical illustrations further contribute to the preference for eBooks, making them indispensable tools in the academic pursuits of postgraduate students. The study highlights that eBooks are extensively utilized for a variety of academic purposes, including coursework completion, research, exam preparation, assignments, and reference needs. Despite the evident benefits, the study reveals varying levels of satisfaction among students, with a significant portion using eBooks only to some extent. Several challenges impede the optimal use of eBooks, such as high costs, device-related inefficiencies, limited access to computers or the internet, readability issues, and the need for operational skills. The study recommended that university libraries should expand their eBook collections and seek partnerships with publishers to provide more affordable or even free access to essential academic texts and universities should consider initiatives to provide or subsidize devices optimized for reading eBooks, such as tablets or e-readers with suitable screen sizes.

Abstract

This study addresses the issue of low student learning outcomes attributed to the frequent use of conventional teaching methods by educators in elementary schools. The Introduction, Connect, Apply, Reflect, and Extend (ICARE) learning model is proposed as a potential solution to enhance these outcomes. The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of implementing the ICARE learning model on students' cognitive learning outcomes in science and social studies (IPAS) in elementary schools. Additionally, the study compares the improvement of cognitive outcomes between students taught using the ICARE model and those taught using traditional methods. This quasi-experimental research employs a non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group design. The findings reveal that the application of the ICARE learning model significantly influences cognitive learning outcomes in IPAS subjects, with an effect size of 46.2%. Furthermore, students instructed through the ICARE model demonstrate greater improvement in cognitive learning outcomes compared to those who receive conventional instruction.
