Abstract

Social Studies learning at SMP Negeri 14 Semarang is still dominated by conventional memorization-based methods, so students' analytical reasoning has not developed optimally. This descriptive qualitative research aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) syntax in stimulating critical thinking skills based on five of Robert Ennis's indicators framed by the standards of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS). The determination of study participants, namely Social Studies teachers and eighth-grade students, was carried out using purposive sampling techniques. The stages of data collection were realized through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and were then analyzed interactively and validated through triangulation. The results of the study show that the implementation of PBL has empirically been proven to meet all five critical thinking indicators through adaptive teacher scaffolding and students' digital literacy collaboration. Nevertheless, the practice of the PBL model is hindered by time management during 'peak hours', limitations of classroom infrastructure, as well as internal student constraints (free-rider effects, low interest, digital distractions, and pedagogical trauma). In conclusion, PBL successfully transforms rote learning into a rational and objective understanding of history, requiring a harmonious synergy between instructional design, supporting facilities, and the socio-emotional readiness of students.

Abstract

The evolution of 21st-century learning demands the integration of digital literacy as a key competency in supporting critical thinking skills and student learning outcomes. Digital literacy is defined as the ability to access, understand, evaluate, and utilize digital information appropriately and responsibly. This study aims to analyze the relationship between digital literacy and the social studies learning outcomes of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 8 Semarang on the topic of Social Interaction. This study employs a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 72 students selected via simple random sampling from a population of 255 students. Learning achievement data were obtained from daily Social Studies test scores on the topic of Social Interaction, while digital literacy data were collected via a questionnaire that had been validated for both validity and reliability. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and Spearman’s rho correlation test. The results indicated that the data were not normally distributed, so a nonparametric test was used. The correlation test yielded a coefficient of 0.042 with a significance level of 0.725 (p > 0.05), indicating that there is no significant relationship between digital literacy and social studies learning outcomes. This relationship exhibits a very low degree of strength. The results suggest that digital literacy has not yet become a determining factor in the achievement of social studies learning outcomes for the material under study.

Abstract

Social Science material is often considered difficult and boring by students due to the abstract nature of the presentation and the lack of innovative instructional media. This research focuses on improving student interest and learning outcomes through the implementation of image media as a concrete solution. Using a Classroom Action Research design implemented in two systematic cycles, this study involved eighteen fourth-grade students at MI Nurul Islam Selok Awar-Awar. The research stages included action planning, classroom intervention, participatory observation, and ongoing reflection. The research findings showed significant improvements in each cycle. Quantitatively, classical mastery increased from 56 percent in the first cycle to 78 percent in the second cycle, with an average score increasing from 66.16 to 78.32. The effectiveness analysis showed an N-Gain value of 0.359, which is in the moderate category, while learning interest jumped drastically from 56 percent to 89 percent. The main conclusion confirms that the use of image media as a learning innovation has proven to be very effective in visualizing abstract concepts, encouraging active involvement, and optimizing student academic achievement. These results provide a practical contribution for educators to transform the classroom atmosphere to be more dynamic and meaningful in order to support the success of social studies learning at the madrasah level in a sustainable manner through the integration of visual elements that are on target and educational for the overall growth of students in elementary schools.

Abstract

Pancasila education in vocational high schools is often hampered by low student engagement due to the abstract and monotonous delivery of human rights (HAM) material. This study focuses on testing the effect of using poster media on improving the learning outcomes of eleventh grade students. The research steps were carried out through a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method using a nonequivalent control group design involving class XI DKV 1 as the experimental group and XI DKV 2 as the control at SMKN 1 Omben. Important stages start from administering a pretest, implementing visual-based learning, to the final measurement through a posttest on thirty subjects. The quantitative research findings through a nonparametric test showed a significance value of 0.247 which is greater than the 0.05 level, indicating that the data did not have a statistically significant difference. Although descriptively the average rank of the experimental class reached 17.27 while the control was 13.73, the Wilcoxon test confirmed that the increase in the treatment group was not significant with a p-value of 0.139. The main conclusion confirms that the integration of posters into human rights material has not been proven effective in significantly improving student academic achievement in this study. This is influenced by the abnormal and heterogeneous distribution of data, necessitating innovation in more interactive digital learning media to strengthen understanding of democratic values sustainably in the future.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of strengthening children’s character based on cultural values amid the rapid pace of modernization, which has the potential to erode local values, particularly within Balinese indigenous communities. The focus of this research is to examine the role of women as agents of informal education in strengthening children’s character based on culture in the indigenous community of Legian, Bali. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, involving women (mothers) as primary informants, as well as community leaders and children as supporting informants. Data analysis was conducted interactively through the processes of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with validity ensured through source and method triangulation. The findings reveal that women play a central role in children’s informal education through habituation, role modeling, communication, and children’s involvement in cultural practices such as preparing banten (ritual offerings), participating in traditional ceremonies, using the Balinese language, and engaging in social activities such as ngayah (communal voluntary service). Women also function as social controllers and facilitators in maintaining the continuity of cultural values amid the influences of modernization. In conclusion, this study affirms that women are key actors in transmitting cultural values and shaping children’s character in a contextual and sustainable manner. Therefore, they make a significant contribution to cultural preservation and the strengthening of the younger generation’s identity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the patterns of students’ verbal and nonverbal participation at each stage of the Think Pair Share (TPS) learning model in history learning in grade XI of SMA Negeri 7 Semarang. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with history teachers and eleventh-grade students as the research subjects. Data were collected through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that students’ participation develops progressively across each stage of TPS. In the think stage, participation appears in the form of cognitive engagement and nonverbal activities such as reading and note-taking. In the pair stage, verbal participation increases through paired discussions that encourage students’ confidence in expressing opinions, asking questions, and responding to peers. In the share stage, participation is reflected in oral communication as well as nonverbal responses such as attention and feedback during presentations. In addition, students’ participation is influenced by internal factors such as self-confidence and learning readiness, as well as external factors including teaching strategies, opportunities to speak, and teacher appreciation. Therefore, the Think Pair Share model is effective in promoting students’ active engagement, both verbally and nonverbally, in history learning.
