Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide and constitutes a major global burden. One proven effective treatment for cardiovascular disease is heart surgery, but patients often experience anxiety and depression both preoperatively and postoperatively. Unmanaged anxiety and depression in the postoperative period can negatively impact patient recovery. An intervention that nurses can implement to address anxiety is music therapy. This study aimed to prove the effect of music therapy on postoperative anxiety and depression in heart surgery patients. This study used a quantitative quasi-experimental research design with a two-group (non-equivalent) pretest-posttest control group design. Researchers divided respondents into two groups: the music therapy group and the control group. Respondents from both groups completed a questionnaire before being given the intervention. Respondents in the music therapy group were given classical music intervention twice, approximately 2 hours after post-extubation and the following day. Meanwhile, the control group was given routine room care intervention, namely deep breathing. The study sample consisted of 28 respondents in each group. Anxiety assessment was carried out using the Indonesian version of the Hospitalized Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The results of the statistical test of the difference in mean anxiety and depression scores after both the first and second interventions between the intervention group and the control group using the Independent T-Test showed a significant difference (p<α; α = 0,05). These results indicate that there is an effect of music therapy on postoperative anxiety and depression in cardiac surgery patients. Music therapy can reduce postoperative anxiety and depression in cardiac surgery patients.

Abstract

Densely populated residential areas are highly vulnerable to fire disasters due to both technical factors, such as inadequate electrical installations, and behavioral factors, including unsafe use of fire. In addressing these risks, the capacity of the community—both at the individual and collective levels—plays a critical role in determining preparedness through knowledge and awareness of fire hazards and their potential impacts. This study aimed to examine the contribution of community knowledge and awareness to fire disaster preparedness among residents of Kalibaru Subdistrict, North Jakarta. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed in this research. Using purposive sampling, 306 respondents were selected from an estimated population of 1,300 residents. Data were collected using structured questionnaires consisting of a fire knowledge questionnaire, a fire awareness questionnaire, and a fire disaster preparedness questionnaire, all of which had been tested for validity and reliability. The relationships among the study variables were analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation test. The results demonstrated significant positive correlations between the level of knowledge (r= 0,220, p < 0,001) and the level of awareness (r= 0,662, p < 0,001) with community preparedness for fire disasters. These findings indicate that improving community preparedness requires not only increasing knowledge through information dissemination but also strengthening public awareness to promote more adaptive behaviors toward fire risks. Therefore, community-based interventions that emphasize enhancing both knowledge and awareness are recommended as effective strategies for reducing the risk of fire disasters.

Abstract

Adolescents are a population vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) due to their involvement in risky sexual behaviors. One factor that is believed to be associated with STI prevention behavior is the role of peers. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between peer roles and STI prevention behavior among adolescents. This research employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 92 students from Al-Miftahiyyah Vocational High School, North Jakarta, selected using a stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using validated and reliable questionnaires measuring peer roles and STI prevention behavior. Data analysis was conducted using the Spearman Rank correlation test. The results showed that the majority of respondents were male (63,0%), aged 18 years (35,9%), and enrolled in grade XI (39,1%). The mean score for peer roles was 22.80, while the mean score for STI prevention behavior was 25,35. The Spearman Rank correlation test revealed a significant positive relationship between peer roles and STI prevention behavior (r = 0,257; p = 0,013). The correlation coefficient indicated a weak relationship between the two variables. This study concludes that better peer roles are associated with better STI prevention behavior among adolescents. Therefore, schools and healthcare professionals are encouraged to develop peer-based reproductive health education programs to improve STI prevention behavior among adolescents.

Abstract

Postmenopausal older women commonly experience musculoskeletal pain, which may interfere with daily activities, reduce productivity, and limit their ability to perform physical activities independently. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy in reducing pain intensity among postmenopausal older women with musculoskeletal pain. An analytical experimental study was conducted at the UPTD Community Health Center I, West Denpasar Health Office, Bali, Indonesia, from May to September 2025. A total of 30 participants were recruited using purposive sampling and equally allocated into two groups. The intervention group received three sessions of acupuncture therapy, while the control group participated in exercise therapy. Pain intensity was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test to compare pain scores between the two groups following the intervention. The results showed a statistically significant difference in pain intensity between the acupuncture and control groups (Asymp. Sig. [2-tailed] < 0,001). The superior pain reduction observed in the acupuncture group may be attributed to its analgesic mechanism through the gate control theory of pain. Acupuncture is believed to stimulate A-beta nerve fibers in the skin and muscles, promoting the release of endogenous opioids, including endorphins, enkephalins, and dynorphins, which contribute to pain relief. These findings suggest that acupuncture is an effective non-pharmacological intervention for reducing musculoskeletal pain in postmenopausal older women.

Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks white blood cells and weakens the body's immune system. Children living with HIV/AIDS often experience stigma and discrimination from both society and their families, which may lead to social withdrawal, feelings of shame, and deterioration in their overall health and well-being. Family support, as the closest source of social support, plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life of children living with HIV/AIDS. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between family support and the quality of life of pediatric patients living with HIV/AIDS. A descriptive correlational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. Data were collected using structured questionnaires from 30 respondents aged 10–18 years. The results showed that 17 respondents received high levels of family support, while 16 respondents had a good quality of life. Spearman's rank correlation test revealed a statistically significant relationship between family support and the quality of life of children living with HIV/AIDS at the Akar Cinta Kasih Foundation (p < 0,001). The findings indicate a positive association between family support and the quality of life of pediatric patients living with HIV/AIDS. Future studies are recommended to employ different research designs and larger sample sizes to obtain more comprehensive and generalizable findings.

Abstract

Chronic illness is a long-term condition that affects not only patients but also their families, who often serve as informal caregivers. Families caring for individuals with chronic illness frequently encounter complex challenges that contribute to caregiver burden. This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with caregiver burden among families of individuals with chronic illness using the Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM) and Family Health Assessment (FHA) approaches A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2023 to January 2024 in Malang Regency, using accidental sampling. 120 respondents participated in the study. Caregiver burden was measured using an adapted version of the Burden Scale for Family Caregivers. Structural equation modeling–partial least squares (SEM-PLS) was employed to analyze the data. The majority of respondents were female (73,3%) and aged 26–33 years (36,7%), with most experiencing a moderate level of caregiver burden. The results revealed a significant negative relationship between contextual factors and caregiver burden (T-statistic = 3,854, p < 0,01). In contrast, functional factors (T-statistic = 2.751, p < 0.01) and structural factors (T-statistic = 3,078, p < 0,01) were positively and significantly associated with caregiver burden. These findings indicate that chronic illness affects not only patients but also family caregivers, with various contextual, functional, and structural factors contributing to the development of caregiver burden. Understanding these factors is essential for developing family-centered interventions aimed at reducing caregiver burden and improving family well-being.

Abstract

Hypertension and smoking are two interrelated factors that have a significant impact on health, particularly among the older adult population aged 60 and older. Hypertension is often referred to as “the silent killer” because it frequently presents no obvious symptoms. Smoking is a modifiable risk factor that contributes to elevated blood pressure through the mechanism by which nicotine causes vasoconstriction of blood vessels. This study aimed to determine the association between smoking habits and the prevalence of hypertension among older adults in the service area of the Banyuputih Community Health Center, Batang Regency, Central Java Province. This study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of 333 older adults aged 60 years and older. A sample of 93 respondents was selected using consecutive sampling and calculated using the Slovin formula with a margin of error of 10%. Data were collected through blood pressure measurements using a digital sphygmomanometer, as well as a smoking habits questionnaire and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Data were statistically analyzed using the chi-square test with a significance level of ρ < 0.05. The prevalence of hypertension among older adults in this study was 73.1%, and the proportion of older adults who smoked was 64.5%. The majority of respondents were heavy smokers (38.7%). The chi-square test results showed a significant association between smoking habits and the incidence of hypertension among the older adults, with a p-value of 0.002. There is an association between smoking habits and hypertension among the older adults in the service area of the Banyuputih Community Health Center; therefore, a health program is needed to address smoking habits among the older adults.

Abstract

Pregnant women's interest in reading the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook plays a crucial role in enhancing knowledge about pregnancy and encouraging adherence to prenatal check-ups. The MCH Handbook has been widely distributed as a health education resource for pregnant women. However, its utilization remains suboptimal. Data from the Indonesian Basic Health Research indicate a declining trend in both the ownership and utilization of the MCH Handbook. This study aimed to describe pregnant women's reading interest regarding the MCH Handbook and their adherence to Antenatal Care (ANC) visits. A quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. The sample consisted of 101 pregnant women selected using total sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire on MCH Handbook reading interest and an observation sheet for ANC visit adherence. Adherence was measured against Ministry of Health standards: a minimum of one visit in the first trimester, two visits in the second trimester, and three visits in the third trimester. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis involving frequency distributions and percentages. The results showed that reading interest in the MCH Handbook fell into the high category (98%), with scores of 93,1% for reading duration, 91,1% for reading content, and 96% for self-confidence. Adherence to ANC visits was also in the high category (98%). The study demonstrates that the majority of pregnant women exhibit high levels of reading interest in the MCH Handbook and high adherence to ANC visits.

Abstract

Adolescence is a critical developmental stage experienced by every individual, characterized by significant physical, biological, socio-emotional, and cognitive changes. Stress during adolescence commonly arises from the inability to adapt effectively to internal and external life demands, resulting in both psychological and physiological disturbances. Five-finger hypnosis therapy is a self-hypnosis intervention that induces deep relaxation, thereby helping to reduce mental tension and psychological burden. This study aimed to analyze the effect of five-finger hypnosis therapy on stress levels among adolescents. A quantitative quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was employed, involving 40 tenth-grade high school students, with 20 participants assigned to the intervention group and 20 to the control group. Participants were recruited using a consecutive sampling technique. Stress levels were measured before and after the intervention using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) questionnaire. The intervention group received five-finger hypnosis therapy in four 10-minute sessions over one month, while the control group received no intervention. The findings showed that the control group remained predominantly at a moderate stress level before and after the study (60,0%). In contrast, the intervention group initially demonstrated predominantly severe stress (70,0%), which decreased to predominantly mild stress (90.0%) following the intervention. The Mann–Whitney test revealed a statistically significant difference in post-intervention stress levels between the intervention and control groups (p = 0,001; p < 0,05). These findings indicate that five-finger hypnosis therapy is effective in reducing stress levels among adolescents.

Abstract

Anemia is a prevalent public health problem among adolescent girls, especially during menstruation, and may cause decreased concentration, fatigue, and lower academic performance. This condition can also affect physical growth and reproductive health in the long term if not properly addressed. The present study aims to describe the level of knowledge and preventive efforts related to anemia among adolescent girls at MTs Negeri 1 Kota Lhokseumawe. A descriptive study with a quantitative approach was conducted involving 75 respondents selected through random sampling. Data were obtained using a structured questionnaire consisting of 10 questions assessing knowledge and 6 questions concerning preventive actions. The findings revealed that most respondents had a moderate level of knowledge about anemia, with 39 respondents (52,0%) categorized as sufficient and 34 respondents (42,7%) as good. However, preventive efforts were still inadequate, with 46 respondents (61,3%) classified as poor. Common preventive actions included consuming nutritious foods rich in iron and taking iron supplements, yet these practices were often inconsistent. The results indicate a considerable gap between knowledge and the actual implementation of preventive behavior. Strengthening health education through school-based programs, counseling, and regular monitoring is crucial to enhance awareness, understanding, and adherence to anemia prevention practices among adolescent girls, particularly during menstruation.
