Abstract

The book cover design plays a crucial role in attracting readers' attention and conveying the essence of the story within. This article analyzes the cover of "The Monstrumologist" by Rick Yancey, designed by Olvyanda Ariesta, using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The analysis explores three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. At the denotation level, visual elements such as a dark road, large shadow, red blood, and a big clock are identified and described. At the connotation level, these elements reveal deeper meanings related to themes of horror, threat, and the tension of time. At the myth level, the combination of these visual elements reflects profound cultural and social values about the struggle between good and evil, as well as human fear of the unknown. Furthermore, this article discusses the influence and experimentation of the designer in achieving an engaging and meaningful final design. Through a qualitative approach with an emphasis on literature studies, this article presents a comprehensive analysis of how the visual elements on the cover of "The Monstrumologist" not only attract attention but also convey deep themes within the story. The results of the analysis show that this cover design successfully creates a rich visual narrative and enhances readers' experience of this horror novel.

Abstract

"Analyzing Putu Sutawijaya's painting titled "Energi Tunggal" (Single Energy) portrays the body as a central focus, through documentation and direct observation of his paintings, which are then analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, Foucault's genealogy of the body, Ponty's Phenomenology, Heidegger's Existentialism, and Freud's Psychoanalysis. Roland Barthes' semiotic approach divides signs into denotation and connotation. At the denotative level, Putu depicts a figure's movement with the burdens surrounding it. At the connotative level, it explains that the burden on the social and value systems binds and does not liberate its people. Then Foucault describes the body as a soft body. Putu shows the absence of freedom that a free person owns over his own body. In Ponty's Phenomenology, the world is available to individuals. Thus, the relationship between humans and their world is never genuinely distant but needs to be more dialectical. Heidegger's Existentialism views the relationship of the body with its world. In his paintings, Putu sees that culture always constructs an individual, showing the form of a person's relationship with his world. Freud's Psychoanalysis on libido, there is a form of individual freedom to actualize themselves that is always limited by rules, values, and norms. Putu's work depicts efforts to break free but are still burdened by social considerations. This study on the painting is to spur the spirit of creating art and enrich new discourses in the Indonesian visual arts world.

Abstract

In today's information technology era, modern society is greatly spoiled by the ease of access to news. One of the information media is online media reporting, which offers news content in written form as well as color photo illustrations, making it easier for readers to understand the content of the news. However, photo illustrations as news content can sometimes be confusing, such as in the reporting of the premeditated murder committed by Ferdi Sambo. Therefore, it is important to deeply understand the meaning of the photo illustrations from the news content about Ferdi Sambo so as not to be trapped in a superficial interpretation of a news story. The interpretation of Ferdi Sambo's photo illustrations in online media uses a qualitative methodology with a semiotic approach by Roland Barthes regarding denotation and connotation meanings. The results of the analysis conducted on the photo illustrations of Ferdi Sambo in online media reporting indicate that some objectives and interests can be concluded as resistance or defense conducted through body gestures and fashion to address the case being faced.

Abstract

The drying oven is a primary support in the furniture manufacturing business, which is carried out using simple and natural techniques, namely the use of solar heat. Based on findings at the partner's location, this collaborative research between lecturers and students will focus on wood drying as the main issue with the aim of helping to increase the potential benefits of wood dryness at Rotra Furniture Annual Jepara in order to maximize furniture production. This research is related to the Product Design Study Program roadmap through the development of education, culture, and creative industry that will be implemented at Rotra Furniture, especially in relation to the use of wood raw materials with a national standard dryness level of 12%, which is suitable for the needs of furniture design that is now developing again. The target of this research is to investigate and report the basic principles of the technology for installing moisture sensor devices with the recommended technological concept, targeting TKT at level 1 within one year. This research will continue to TKT targets at levels 2 and 3 with the readiness for implementation and proof of concept of technology on wood furniture business operators directly. The methodology used is experimental to collect performance data based on time and the rate of drying in the wood oven. The experiment was carried out using local teak wood that was wet after sawing division until it reached a level of dryness that was ready to become furniture production material. This study also involves data collection techniques with field study approaches through direct surveys in the field and interviews with the owners of the Rotra Furniture business. The data analysis technique used in this research is an interactive model, including data collection, data reduction, data analysis, and conclusion drawing.
