Jurnal Komunitas Bahasa menerbitkan manuskrip tentang penelitian pengajaran bahasa, sastra, dan linguistik. Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of integrating character values into literature learning to support the development of the Pancasila Student Profile in schools. One of the key dimensions to be fostered is student independence. The purpose of this research is to describe the dimension of independence which includes self-awareness and self-regulation as reflected in the main characters of Andrea Hirata’s novel Guru Aini, and to examine its relevance to literature learning in schools. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a content analysis approach. The data were collected from excerpts in the novel that depict the independent traits of the characters Desi and Aini. Data collection techniques included intensive reading, note-taking, and coding, followed by analysis based on the indicators of the independence dimension outlined in the Pancasila Student Profile. The results show that the characters Desi and Aini embody the independence dimension through self-awareness, as demonstrated by their ability to reflect and recognize their own strengths and limitations. Their self-regulation is reflected in their discipline, initiative, emotional management, and resilience in facing challenges. In conclusion, the independence dimension portrayed by the main characters in Guru Aini is highly relevant as a literary teaching material in schools, particularly for strengthening students’ character in a contextual and meaningful way.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and triggering factors of code-switching and code-mixing in WhatsApp communication between FKIP UMN Al-Washliyah students and their parents during the 2024–2025 academic year. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the data were collected from screenshots of WhatsApp conversations involving eighth-semester students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program. Data analysis involved identifying, classifying, and describing the forms of code-switching and code-mixing, along with examining the context of their usage. The findings reveal that students, as bilingual or multilingual speakers, actively engage in code-mixing, especially by integrating regional languages into Indonesian when communicating with their parents. Code-switching was also observed, though it occurred less frequently. Additionally, mixed code-mixing and several spelling errors were found, enriching the linguistic dynamics of family communication in a digital context. These findings highlight the significant role of regional languages in maintaining identity and intimacy in students’ online interactions with family members.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the benefits of Indonesian language learning for foreign speakers (BIPA) through the Selasar platform for international students at Universitas Muslim Nusantara Al-Washliyah. BIPA plays a vital role in facilitating the academic and social adaptation of international students in Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through observations and questionnaires administered to BIPA participants. The findings indicate that the use of Selasar in BIPA learning provides several significant advantages, including improved access to learning materials, flexible learning schedules, and enhanced understanding of Indonesian culture. Moreover, the platform fosters interaction between students and instructors as well as among peers. However, certain challenges were identified, such as unstable internet connectivity and difficulties in adapting to the online learning environment. Overall, the results suggest that Selasar is an effective tool for supporting BIPA instruction, and further development of its content and features is recommended to optimize the learning experience for international students.

Abstract

Language in song lyrics conveys not only literal meanings (denotative) but also emotional and symbolic nuances (connotative). The song “Daur Hidup” by Donne Maula is a musical composition rich in expressive diction, reflecting the complexities of life through layered meanings. This study aims to identify and describe the denotative and connotative meanings embedded in the lyrics of the song using a semantic approach. Employing a qualitative method with a descriptive design, data were collected through attentive listening and note-taking techniques, followed by semantic analysis. The findings reveal that each line of the lyrics contains denotative meanings that represent literal interpretations, as well as connotative meanings that express emotional states, life struggles, and symbolic references. Phrases such as “ditempa” (forged), “mati berkali-kali tapi bisa hidup lagi” (die many times but still live again), and “bohong jika aku bilang selalu kuat” (it’s a lie if I say I’m always strong) exemplify the emotional depth and existential themes conveyed through the lyrics. This study demonstrates that semantic analysis is effective in uncovering hidden meanings within lyrical texts and underscores the role of song lyrics as a form of artistic and reflective expression.

Abstract

Short story writing is a critical skill in Indonesian language learning, as it fosters students’ imagination, critical thinking, and self-expression. However, many students still struggle with this skill due to limited motivation and the lack of engaging instructional media. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using the Wattpad application to improve students’ short story writing skills in Grade XI Social Science at Madrasah Aliyah Al Washliyah Tebing Tinggi. Employing a quantitative approach, the study adopted a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group. Sixty students were selected and assigned to two groups: the experimental group used Wattpad as a writing platform, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. A short story writing test was used as the research instrument, assessed across six dimensions: narrative structure, plot, character development, setting, language style, and originality. Data were analyzed using an independent t-test. The results revealed a statistically significant difference in posttest scores between the two groups, with the experimental group showing greater improvement, particularly in the dimensions of language style and originality. These findings indicate that Wattpad is effective in enhancing students’ writing performance by offering a creative, interactive, and motivating learning environment. The study recommends integrating digital storytelling platforms such as Wattpad into language instruction to foster student literacy and creativity in the digital era.

Abstract

This study analyzes the persuasive discourse strategies employed in handbody product advertisements and identifies their relevance within the context of Indonesian language learning. As a form of mass communication, advertisements are inherently designed to influence audiences to take specific actions. In handbody advertisements, language is often manipulated to construct an ideal image and emphasize product benefits to attract consumer attention. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with a literature review approach. Data were collected through an in-depth analysis of various handbody advertisements from print and digital media, as well as literature related to persuasive discourse theory and Indonesian language education. The data were analyzed inductively to identify patterns of persuasive language, including word choice, sentence structure, language style, and rhetorical strategies. The findings reveal that advertisements utilize a variety of techniques to appeal to both emotional and rational aspects of the audience. The implication of this study is that persuasive discourse analysis can be integrated into Indonesian language instruction to enhance students’ critical thinking skills in understanding and producing persuasive texts.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of information technology has fostered the emergence of new media that can be utilized in various fields, including education. Among these, podcasts have gained prominence as dynamic and accessible platforms with great potential for enhancing the learning experience. This study aims to examine the effectiveness and pedagogical value of podcasts as a learning medium in teaching the Indonesian language. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected through literature review, observation, and documentation of academic sources such as scholarly books and journal articles. The data were analyzed using content analysis to interpret the role of podcasts in educational contexts. The findings indicate that podcasts are not only effective and practical but also contribute significantly to creating interactive learning environments and improving students’ Indonesian language proficiency. Moreover, podcasts offer diverse, flexible content that fosters student engagement and motivation. Thus, integrating podcasts into language instruction represents a relevant and innovative approach to enhancing the quality of Indonesian language education in the digital age.

Abstract

The low proficiency in writing news texts among junior high school students is often attributed to the lack of engaging and contextual learning media. This study aims to describe the news writing skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Siberut Utara after being taught using audiovisual media. Employing a quantitative approach with a descriptive method, the study involved 50 students selected through random sampling. The research instrument was a news writing test administered after the learning intervention. Data analysis involved reading and reviewing students’ texts, scoring, calculating percentage scores, classifying writing abilities based on a scale of 10, and drawing conclusions. The findings show that the students' average score in writing news texts was 78, indicating a "good" level of proficiency. Specifically, the average score for structuring news texts was 74, for organizing content 86, and for editing 73.33. These results demonstrate that audiovisual media effectively support the development of students’ news writing skills by presenting concrete, engaging, and easily comprehensible content. Thus, audiovisual media can serve as an innovative instructional strategy to enhance students' literacy, particularly in writing factual and structured news texts.

Abstract

Language acquisition in early childhood is a natural and systematic process that reflects a child's cognitive and linguistic development. This study aims to describe the phonological acquisition of Indonesian vowel sounds by a 2-year-2-month-old child, focusing on the production of the five primary vowels /a/, /i/, /u/, /e/, and /o/ in initial, medial, and final word positions. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through observation and note-taking of spontaneous utterances in natural communication contexts. The findings reveal that the child had successfully acquired all five vowel phonemes, with dominant mastery of /a/, /i/, and /u/. The phonological acquisition process was characterized by simplification strategies, including omission, substitution, and assimilation. These strategies indicate that the child adapted to articulatory limitations by restructuring complex phonemes into simpler ones. The consistent use of vowel sounds demonstrates a universal pattern of phonological development influenced by both internal (physiological maturity) and external (linguistic environment) factors. This study contributes to psycholinguistic research and offers practical insight for educators and parents in supporting early language development and identifying potential language delays.

Abstract

Rhetoric plays a strategic role in political discourse, particularly in presidential debates that serve as a public arena for shaping candidate image and influencing voter perception. This study aims to analyze rhetorical devices employed by the three Indonesian presidential candidates during the 2024 election debates. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach, the data were sourced from official debate transcripts retrieved from the YouTube channel of the Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU RI). Data collection was conducted through observation and documentation, followed by content analysis to interpret the rhetorical patterns used by each candidate. The findings reveal that all three candidates employed a variety of rhetorical devices, including alliteration, anaphora, hyperbole, metaphor, parallelism, and personification. Anies Baswedan frequently used metonymy and rhetorical questions; Ganjar Pranowo prominently employed metaphors and personification; while Prabowo Subianto heavily relied on parallelism and metaphors. These findings suggest that rhetorical devices were strategically utilized to reinforce arguments, enhance credibility, and shape public perception throughout the political campaign.
