Abstract

The importance of mastering Arabic syntax for Muslims makes this field widely sought after, not only among young learners but also among adults. However, innovations in Arabic syntax instruction tailored to the needs of adult learners are still rarely developed. This study aims to describe the application of an inductive-based technique, namely Mistake Buster, in teaching Arabic syntax, particularly the structure of jumlah fi‘liyyah. The study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach involving five adult female learners over the age of 20 in a semi-private Naḥwu Class program. The results show that adult learners not only better understand the structure of jumlah fi‘liyyah but also gain a deeper understanding of i‘rāb. Learners also better understand types of kalimah and their differences; recognize the kinds, meanings, and patterns of jumlah; understand the appropriate use of ṣifah in fā’il or maf‘ūl bih; and are able to analyze elements such as fi‘il, fā’il, maf‘ūl bih, ḥarf, isim majrūr, and ṣifah in a jumlah, along with their i‘rāb signs. In addition, their activeness, curiosity, self-confidence, critical thinking, memory, and motivation improve. This study contributes significantly to Arabic syntax instruction for adult learners and recommends developing instructional materials or media based on the Mistake Buster technique.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low motivation and negative perceptions of students towards Arabic language learning, which is still dominated by traditional methods and pays little attention to the affective aspects of students. The purpose of this study was to describe students' perceptions of the effectiveness of teaching methods in Arabic language learning at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Fatahillah Semarang and to identify the factors that influence it. This study used a descriptive quantitative approach with data collection through a four-level Likert scale questionnaire administered to 20 eighth-grade students. The results showed that students' perceptions were in the good category with an average score of 2.98. The indicators of clarity of delivery, variety of methods, and student participation received the highest scores (3.08), while the relevance and contextuality of the material were still the weakest aspects (2.75). In conclusion, teachers have applied quite effective methods, but there needs to be improvement in context-based and real-life learning. Scientifically, this study contributes to strengthening Arabic pedagogy studies by emphasizing the dimensions of student perception and motivation. It is recommended that future studies use a mixed methods approach to explore in greater depth the relationship between perception, motivation, and student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Reading skill is one of the important competencies in learning Arabic. However, many students still experience difficulties in understanding reading texts and organizing ideas coherently, so appropriate learning media are needed to support the learning process. This study aims to determine the effect of the use of paragraph puzzle media on improving the learning outcomes of reading skills of grade X students at Islamic Senior High School Ma'arif Raudhatut Thalibin Metro, Lampung. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The research sample totaled 29 students divided into experimental classes and control classes. Data collection is carried out through tests and non-tests, namely pretest and posttest, observation, interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, the Levene homogeneity test, the t-test of two independent samples, and the N-Gain analysis. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the learning outcomes of reading skills of students in the experimental class and the control class. The sig value < 0.05, which shows a significant influence of the use of paragraph puzzle media on reading learning outcomes. N-Gain analysis showed that the improvement in learning outcomes in the experimental class was in the high category, while in the control class it was in the medium category. These findings show that paragraph puzzle media is effective in improving students' reading skills, especially in understanding the content of reading texts, arranging paragraphs logically, and increasing students' activeness and motivation to learn. Theoretically, this research enriches the discourse on Arabic language learning media by demonstrating that paragraph puzzle media plays a significant role in enhancing reading comprehension processes, particularly in integrating linguistic knowledge, text coherence, and higher-order thinking skills in reading skills. Future research is recommended to apply paragraph puzzle media in different educational contexts and with larger samples in order to obtain more comprehensive results.

Abstract

This study examines politeness strategies and transitivity patterns in the speech of the characters of the Arabic cartoon series Siraj Season 4 using a pragmatic functional approach. The background of the study departs from the limitations of studies that integrate Brown & Levinson's politeness theory with Systemic Functional Linguistics in Arabic children's media discourse. The purpose of this study is to describe the types of politeness strategies and types of transitivity processes that realize interpersonal meaning in the characters' speech. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method based on content analysis with data taken through purposive sampling from eleven episodes of Siraj. The analysis is carried out through the classification of politeness strategies (positive, negative, off record, and bald on record) and the identification of types of transitivity processes (material, mental, verbal, relational). The results show that positive and negative strategies are the most dominant, realized through mental and verbal processes that emphasize empathy, cooperation, and social respect. Meanwhile, off record strategies appear in educational contexts that emphasize moral gentleness. This study confirms that politeness in Siraj is a pragmatic and grammatical phenomenon that functions to educate socio moral values, and has implications for the development of Arabic language learning that emphasizes polite and reflective communication. Suggestions for future research include conducting comparative studies with other Arabic language children’s cartoons to reveal cross cultural differences in the realization of politeness strategies and transitivity patterns, as well as further developing the analysis by incorporating other meta functions within the Systemic Functional Linguistics framework.

Abstract

Learning nahwu (Arabic grammar) nowadays can be accessed on various digital platforms. One of them is Mohamed Mekawy's nahwu learning channel. Mohamed Mekawy provides nahwu learning materials and methods that anyone can master, from basic to advanced levels. Mekawy has an Arabic language learning institution called the Mekawy Academy, along with social media platform on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Telegram. This study aims to understand the learning activity and the method used in nahwu learning from Mohamed Mekawy's social media. This study uses the Krippendorf analysis method with a qualitative approach that includes 6 research steps, those are determining the research theme, determining data sampling, finding answers to the research questions, filtering the data, connecting the findings, and writing the research report. The results of the study show that Mekawy has a distinctive method in mastering nahwu, first is the choice of starting material by mu'rab and mabni or al-jumlah al-fi'liyyah and al-jumlah al-ismiyyah. Second are Maharah tafkīk which is the skill of breaking down a sentence into individual words and maharah taṣnif which is the skill of classifying words into isim, fi`il, or ḥarf. The last or third is the application of the analogy method. This research will provide new ideas in studying nahwu with new methods up to an advanced level. A recommended topic for future research is the creation of short videos to facilitate understanding of nahwu on social media, which can be studied using the research and development method to create the idea of using social media as media to learn nahwu.

Abstract

This study examines the use of satirical language in the YouTube clip “Mustafa Momari Nasihuhu Ila Iblis,” a digital performance that combines satirical language with sharp socio-political messages. Interest in this topic is driven by the growing popularity of YouTube as an alternative platform for political expression in the Arab world. Creators use satire to implicitly criticize those in power through multimodal communication. The main objectives of this study are to identify the types of satirical language used, examine the context of its development, and describe its role in the development of socio-political commentary. Data were collected through a qualitative descriptive approach and stylistic analysis, based on Gorys Keraf's theory of satirical language, to identify satirical utterances. The results of the analysis show that there are six types of satire: irony (6 data), cynicism (7), sarcasm (9), satire (5), innuendo (5), and antithesis (3). Sarcasm was identified as the most dominant type. These findings confirm that Momari's satirical style is effective in criticizing Saudi Arabian leadership and various socio-political issues in the Arab-Islamic world. This study contributes to Arabic language studies by demonstrating the relevance of stylistics in explaining contemporary digital language. Future research should focus on developing multimedia analysis or cross-platform comparisons to gain deeper insights into the function of satirical language styles and the role of satire in digital political communication.

Abstract

This study examines affective strategies expressed through Arabic-Indonesian code-mixing in Arabic microlearning content on TikTok. As an informal and participatory learning space, TikTok enables not only the delivery of instructional messages but also the creation of emotional, social, and cultural connections. This research aims to identify the types and roles of code mixing in videos from the @hayfaacademy account and analyze how these linguistic choices foster affective engagement between the creator and viewers. Using a qualitative approach with critical discourse analysis, the study explores macro structures of meaning, classifies forms of language mixing, and interprets viewers’ emotional involvement through the affective domain framework. The findings reveal that code mixing supports comprehension while strengthening interpersonal closeness, indicating its dual role as a linguistic and affective strategy within digital learning settings. Theoretically, this study contributes to discussions on affect in Arabic language learning, particularly within social media environments where emotions and meaning-making are intertwined. Practically, the results offer insights for educators and content creators on designing microlearning materials that are empathetic, culturally resonant, and accessible to diverse learners. Future studies may expand the scope by incorporating multimodal analysis and engaging participants from broader sociocultural backgrounds to deepen understanding of linguistic and affective dynamics in Arabic microlearning.

Abstract

The rift between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu in the alliance against the Houthi group reflects ideological shifts and political and diplomatic interests in the Middle East, while also marking a change in the direction of US-Israel relations under regional geopolitical pressure. This study aims to uncover the underlying ideology, power relations, and social context reflected in media coverage of the rift between Donald Trump and Benyamin Netanyahu. It also examines their behavioral patterns during critical moments of their alliance, particularly amid the Houthi conflict. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this research applies Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework. The primary data consist of two Arabic language news articles from Al-Jazeera and two from I24 News. Data collection involved translation, close reading, and note taking, while analysis followed the stages of data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that, at the textual level, experiential, relational, and expressive values convey ideology, self-representation, and power asymmetry between Trump and Netanyahu. At the discourse practice level, Al-Jazeera utilizes intertextuality and reported speech, whereas I24 News highlights direct quotations and harmonious narratives. At the sociocultural level, global political dynamics, institutional influences, media roles, and Trump’s extreme nationalist ideology shape discourse construction. The study concludes that in critical situations, Trump is opportunistic, while Netanyahu remains cooperative, reflecting Israel’s dependence on the United States for security and political legitimacy. This study contributes to critical discourse analysis by expanding the object and focus of analysis in explaining the dynamics of the relationship and behavior patterns of the two strategic alliances between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu when in critical situations. However, because this study focuses on two media outlets, future research should involve American media and other international media to provide a more comprehensive understanding of US-Israel relations in the Middle East.

Abstract

Arabic language learning at the Madrasah Tsanawiyah level continues to face challenges related to the gap between expected language competence and students’ actual abilities. The structural complexity of Arabic, combined with the use of less adaptive instructional methods, often results in low student participation and limited learning autonomy. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the scaffolding method in Arabic language learning at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Darussalam Banjeng and to examine its implications for students’ learning processes and outcomes. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through classroom observations, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed inductively through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that scaffolding provides systematic and gradual instructional support, enhances students’ mastery of vocabulary and sentence structures, and improves productive language skills, particularly speaking and writing. Moreover, the method fosters more collaborative classroom interactions and strengthens students’ learning independence. This study concludes that scaffolding is an effective pedagogical approach for Arabic language learning and holds significant potential for broader application in foreign language instruction within the madrasah context.
