Abstract

The film Wadjda by Haifaa al-Mansour is a cinematic work that portrays the struggles of a young girl in Saudi Arabia as she navigates rigid social norms. In recent decades, Saudi Arabian society has undergone various social reforms aimed at redefining the role of women, including easing restrictions on education and social participation. This context is significant to analyze, as films often serve as a medium that reflects and critiques ongoing social dynamics. This study aims to explore how the film reflects the ongoing social reforms within Saudi society. Tzvetan Todorov's narrative theory outlines five stages: equilibrium, disruption, recognition, resolution, and new equilibrium. The method used is narrative analysis with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation of narrative elements in the film and analyzed based on Todorov's five stages. The analysis process includes identifying the initial equilibrium, the disruption faced by the main character, the recognition of the arising situation, efforts to remedy it, and the achievement of a new equilibrium. The results show that Wadjda begins with an equilibrium, where Wadjda lives a typical everyday life. Disruption occurs when Wadjda expresses a desire to buy a bicycle, which conflicts with gender norms in her society. Recognition of this challenge drives Wadjda to pursue her dream, ultimately leading to a positive shift in societal views on women. Through Todorov's narrative analysis, it becomes evident that the film effectively illustrates how small changes can spark discussions on women's rights and individual freedom within a conservative cultural context. This study contributes to the academic discourse on the intersection between narrative structures and social reform by providing a case study that applies Todorov's theory to Arabic cinema. It also highlights the significance of Wadjda as a cultural artifact that reflects evolving gender norms in Saudi Arabia, thereby enriching the understanding of how media serves as a lens for societal transformation. Despite its insights, this study is limited in scope as it focuses solely on Wadjda without comparative analysis with other films addressing similar themes. Additionally, the study does not consider audience reception, which could provide a deeper understanding of the film's societal impact. Future research could address these gaps by incorporating comparative studies or exploring the film's reception in both local and global contexts.

Abstract

Slang is a linguistic phenomenon that is closely related to the creativity of young people in language, the more difficult it is created, the more secret the communication used. Slang often appears in a large group to small groups, no exception in a group of young people in Islamic educational institutions that use Arabic as the language of instruction in everyday life, of course this is a major influence on the emergence of slang among students. This study aims to describe the process of Arabic slang word formation found in speakers in modern Islamic boarding schools and explore the function of Arabic slang in the pesantren environment. This research uses a qualitative approach with data collection methods through interviews and direct observations of santri who are designated as informants. The informants used in this study have specific requirements such as: 1) Is a student at the Modern Islamic Boarding School, 2) The source of research data is daily speech used by students in modern Islamic boarding schools, while the specific data is in the form of words. Data analysis is done through three stages, namely: (1) data reduction, (2) data classification and presentation, and (3) conclusion drawing. The results of the analysis are presented using informal and formal methods. The results show that Arabic slang words used by modern boarding school students include ordinary slang, acronyms, and abbreviations, with the formation process in the form of phoneme deletion, syllable deletion, phoneme addition, reversal, and deletion. These slang words function to facilitate pronunciation, express curses, express emotions such as anger, confusion, and surprise. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the formation process of Arabic slang in modern Islamic boarding schools, contributing to the understanding of linguistic creativity among youth in educational settings. The study is limited to a specific demographic (students aged 13-17 in modern Islamic boarding schools), which may not represent the broader Arabic-speaking youth population. For future researchers, it is hoped that they can find new slangs in other educational institutions, so that there are many variations of linguistic phenomena that can be studied and can be learned by the general public, so as to reduce misunderstandings of communication between teenagers in modern boarding schools and the community.

Abstract

Ibn al-Rumi is one of the prominent poets in the tradition of classical Arabic literature whose his works reflect the beauty of language as well as profound emotional expression. The qasidah Riṡā’ Al-Baṣrah is one of his significant works because it illustrates the social, political, and emotional conditions faced by the people of Basrah at that time. This study, titled "The Intrinsic Elements in the Qasidah Riṡā’ Al-Baṣrah by Ibn al-Rumi: A Structuralist Study," aims to identify the intrinsic elements contained within the qasidah. The analysis of the intrinsic elements in this qasidah not only provides insight into the aesthetic beauty of the literary work but also reveals a deeper understanding of the meanings embedded within it. The method used in this research is the descriptive analytical method, where the researcher describes and analyzes the intrinsic elements found in the qasidah through a structuralist approach. The findings of this study are as follows: 1) Theme: Collapse or downfall, 2) Emotions: The emotions expressed in the qasidah include sadness, pain, anger, confusion, fear, distress, regret, and anxiety, 3) Imagery: Depictions of the severity of trials and similar experiences,4) Literary devices used by the poet include tibaq (antithesis), muqabalah (contrast), iqtibas (allusion to other texts), and saja’ (rhymed prose). Thus, this research can serve as an important reference for the development of Arabic literary studies, particularly in linking between the intrinsic elements of a literary work. This study still has limitations, such as the lack of analysis of extrinsic elements, including the historical, social, and political contexts that influenced this work, as well as the insufficient discussion of its impact on the development of Arabic literature. For future research, it is recommended that studies not only focus on intrinsic elements but also examine extrinsic elements and their influence on the understanding of meaning in literary works, thereby providing a more comprehensive insight into the development and relevance of classical poetry in modern literary studies.

Abstract

Arabic is one of the most widely used languages in the world, especially among Muslims, because it is the language of the Qur'an and hadith. In learning Arabic, there are five skills that must be mastered by students, one of which is writing skills (maharah al-kitabah), which includes insya' muwajjah skills, namely guided composition or composing sentences. However, in practice, many students face obstacles such as boredom, difficulty in composing sentences, and lack of innovation in learning. To overcome this, this study aims to improve the insya' muwajjah skills of class 1 high school students at Madrasah Diniyyah Assunniyyah Kencong Jember by using sentence board media. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, with data collection through observation, interviews, documentation, and written tests. Data analysis is carried out by reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions, as well as triangulating data sources. The results of the study indicate that the use of sentence board media can increase students' interest in learning, reduce boredom, and make it easier for them to compose sentences in Arabic. This media is also effective in helping teachers deliver materials in a more interesting and interactive way. Thus, it can be concluded that the sentence board media is effective in improving the insya' muwajjah abilities of students and making the learning process more interesting and enjoyable.

Abstract

Arabic textbooks in Islamic schools contain many loanwords from Arabic into Indonesian, which facilitate students’ language acquisition due to their similarity and ease of memorization. Vocabulary mastery is crucial, as its deficiency often poses challenges in learning Arabic. This study analyzes the root words of loanwords and their absorption process in Arabic textbooks. Using a qualitative literature review approach, data were collected through document analysis and examined using content analysis. The findings reveal that most loanwords follow a triliteral root pattern 126 words, followed by triliteral roots with one additional letter 16 words, two additional letters 4 words, and quadriliteral roots 3 words. The absorption process occurs through direct adoption, phonological adaptation, and morphological adaptation. This study contributes to the development of more effective vocabulary teaching methods for Arabic learning. However, it is limited to Arabic textbooks published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, excluding those from private publishers. Future research is recommended to explore loanwords in Arabic textbooks from private publishers to understand variations in absorption processes and root words, as well as to assess the effectiveness of loanword-based teaching methods in enhancing students’ Arabic vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The escalating conflict between Israel and Palestine has become a major focus of international forums, including the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit and the Arab League held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on November 11, 2024. In this conference, Indonesia played an active role through a speech delivered by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anis Matta. This study aims to explore how Indonesia’s national aspirations are represented in the speech, how the text is interpreted by various audiences, and how sociocultural contexts contribute to the meaning of the speech. Types of research in this study are descriptive qualitative, Identify Subsections consists of the primary data source is the transcription of Anis Matta’s speech, supported by relevant journal articles, books, and literature. Data collection techniques include watching and note-taking. The data is analyzed using Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis model: textual analysis, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. The findings indicate that the speech represents Indonesia’s aspirations through various statements, including highlighting Israel’s acts of genocide, criticism of the lack of unity among Islamic countries, a proposal of five strategic steps and others. The speech produced in the context of escalating Israel-Palestine conflict and received positive responses from the public. Influential sociocultural factors include institutional, situational, and systemic aspects such as politics, history, and culture. This research contributes to Arabic language studies and critical linguistics by showing how language in diplomacy can reflect national values in international forums, especially amid the intensifying Palestine-Israel conflict. However, the study is limited by its focus on a single speech and suggests future research to include comparative analysis and assess the concrete impact on Indonesia’s foreign policy.

Abstract

Students of Arabic Language Education at State Institute for Islamic Studies of Kerinci often face difficulties in developing speaking skills, mainly due to traditional, teacher-centered methods that limit active participation. Project-Based Learning offers a more engaging approach, while Experiential Learning Theory helps explain how real-world learning experiences can improve students’ communicative competence. This study aims to analyze the role of Project-Based Learning in enhancing the speaking skills of Arabic language students at Kerinci through the lens of Experiential Learning Theory as developed by David Kolb. Employing a qualitative method with a case study design, the research was conducted within the context of Arabic language instruction. The study involves data collection through interviews, observations, and document analysis, followed by thematic analysis to explore the integration of Project-Based Learning and Experiential Learning Theory. The findings are interpreted using Kolb’s learning cycle to explore its role in the development of students’ Arabic speaking skills. The results show that the implementation of Project-Based Learning fosters active student participation in oral communication by creating a collaborative and reflective learning environment. In this context, Kolb’s experiential learning cycle comprising concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation was found to be organically integrated into the dynamics of the project, rendering the learning experience not only cognitively meaningful but also affectively and socially transformative. A novel contribution of this study lies in its identification of how students’ sense of ownership over the project process directly stimulates intrinsic motivation, speaking confidence, and academic resilience in the face of linguistic challenges. Furthermore, the integration of Project-Based Learning and Experiential Learning Theory was shown to promote the development of heightened metalinguistic awareness and to accelerate students’ identity shift from passive language users to active and reflective communicators. This study recommends the systematic implementation of Kolb-based Project-Based Learning within Arabic language curricula to support pedagogical transformation geared toward authentic, participatory, and sustainable communication.

Abstract

One of the reasons students at Al-Azhar 29-BSB Islamic-School don’t yet have basic Arabic-skills is the lack of a learning model that encourages Arabic speaking practice, whether independently, in-class, or socially with school friends. Also, the project offers significant opportunities for active and cooperative learning, specifically through speaking practice using video-based media, and this practice is optimally supported by Powtoon. This study aims to characterize Project-Based Learning and its implementation; characterization of Powtoon in speaking through Project; and the challenges of this practice. This study employed qualitative-approachwith an-explanatory design. Data collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires. Data analysed by Spradley-model includes: domain, taxonomic, component, and cultural theme analysis. The results showed that the implementation of the Project with Powtoon generally had a students'-confidence, creativity, and Arabic skills. Never the less, there were challenges, such as the limited features of the free version of Powtoon, variations in students' mastery, time-management, and shyness. This study concludes that although the Powtoon-based Project has great potential, the right strategy is needed to overcome these challenges so that Arabic learning is more optimal. Project using Powtoon in kalam, with Gen-Zare rarely done, so the opportunity to develop it is large in the form of research.

Abstract

The success of Arabic language education in Islamic higher education largely depends on a deep understanding of the challenges faced by learners. This study critically explores the perceptions of fourth-semester students in the Arabic Language Education program at the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kerinci regarding the difficulties of learning Arabic as a foreign language, using a constructivist approach. Employing a phenomenological method, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focused group discussions. The findings reveal that students face not only linguistic challenges such as the complexity of Arabic grammar (nahwu) and phonology but also significant affective barriers: learning trauma from past experiences, language anxiety, and a sense of meaninglessness resulting from rote-oriented instruction. A misalignment between instructional approaches and learners’ experiential needs exacerbates these issues. Surprisingly, some students demonstrated resilience and learning creativity through informal study communities and self-directed digital learning. The constructivist perspective highlights how students reconstruct meaning within institutional limitations. This study underscores the urgent need for curriculum reform, teacher training grounded in psychopedagogical awareness, and the empowerment of learner agency. Future research should explore the role of technology and locally contextualized instructional design in promoting more transformative and engaging Arabic language learning experiences.
