Abstract

This study is concerned with the English language teachers' views regarding the use of teaching aids in secondary schools in Libya. The aim is to explore English teachers’ opinions of the availability, problems, sources and other characteristics of the teaching aids. In order to explore these issues, this study has made use of a combination of methods in the form of questionnaire and interview with English language teachers. One hundred questionnaires were sent to English teachers in secondary schools in Libya, of whom 85 responded. This was followed by interviews with some teachers. Although the results of this study echoed the general views on the importance of using teaching aids, it revealed that traditional teaching aids e.g. chalk and blackboard, pictures and textbooks still dominate. Apparently more teaching aids are used by English teachers in private schools than in state schools, yet teachers seemed to have common issues preventing them from using teaching aids which include: lack of money to purchase aids, lack of locally produced aids, students' language inadequacy, insufficient time, and class size. The findings of this study reflect the urgency to address these problems including that of the English curriculum in secondary schools.

Abstract

In Awka South Local Government Area, truancy among primary school pupils is a significant issue that affects academic performance and overall student development, necessitating targeted interventions to improve attendance and support for students. The study employed a descriptive survey design to identify causes of truancy among primary school pupils in Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State. It involved a population of 557 staff members, with a sample of 250 teachers from 15 schools selected randomly. Data was collected using a validated questionnaire with a four-point Likert scale and analyzed using descriptive statistics like frequency tables and mean scores. The mean score threshold for significance was set at 2.5. The method ensured accurate results by employing face and content validity checks and a test-retest reliability procedure. Findings indicate that truancy is recognized as unauthorized absence from school, influenced by factors such as lack of parental encouragement, excessive freedom, inadequate educational facilities, and peer influence. The study highlights significant effects, including increased risk of criminal behavior, academic struggles, and overall negative impact on the educational experience. To address these issues, the study recommends strategies such as incorporating hands-on activities, maintaining high academic expectations, creating a supportive classroom environment, and early identification of struggling students. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of truancy and dropout issues and offers practical solutions for improving student attendance and academic performance in the context of Awka South Local Government Area.

Abstract

Social media is one of the most common tools and we can get any information we need, for example about gender equality. One of the social media hits right now is YouTube. YouTube can search for various information and even place advertisements to sell. To unlock the wrong thinking towards women’s equality. This research uses Fairclough's critical discourse analysis method and Derrida's deconstruction theory. The results showed that in the ABC soy sauce advert, there is gender inequality between women and men where men must always be served. Men assume that a woman's job is only in the kitchen and taking care of housework. This ABC Soy Sauce advert plays an important role in breaking down gender stereotypes by presenting a more inclusive and balanced picture of the roles of men and women in everyday life. By dissecting the meaning behind the advert, the author highlights the importance of promoting equality and dismantling traditional gender norms. The findings suggest that the Kecap ABC advert has the potential to challenge stereotypes and promote a more inclusive society.

Abstract

This study explores the role of teacher support, collaboration, and group discussions in enhancing students' critical thinking skills during project-based learning (PBL). Through qualitative analysis, the study examines students' perceptions of the additional support provided by teachers, suggestions for improving PBL to foster critical thinking, and the challenges faced during the project. Results indicate that teachers' involvement as facilitators is crucial for guiding students through complex tasks and ensuring they remain on track. Students reported a perceived improvement in their critical thinking skills, attributing it to the inquiry-based nature of PBL that encouraged deep engagement with the subject matter. However, several challenges emerged, including time constraints, difficulties with resource access, and issues related to group dynamics, such as coordination and leadership. Suggestions for improvement emphasized the need for clearer project guidelines, more diverse resources, and a structured approach to problem-solving. The study also highlights the essential role of teachers not just as instructors but as mentors, guiding students' learning while encouraging collaboration and communication within groups. Overall, PBL was found to foster high levels of student engagement, motivation, and active participation, contributing to the development of critical thinking. However, overcoming logistical and interpersonal challenges is essential to fully realizing the benefits of PBL in enhancing students' cognitive and collaborative skills.

Abstract

This study examined the portrayal of gender roles in selected Nollywood movies. The study objectives were to; analyze the depiction of women in domestic/familial roles compared to men in Nollywood movies. The study employed both the cultivation theory and gender schema theory to serve as theoretical frameworks for this research. The research design employed in this study is the content analytical design which specifically involves systematic examination of communications to objectively describe and quantify phenomena and the population of the study were the Nollywood movies produced between 2012 and 2020. Iya Alalake (2012), Oloture (2018), Isoken (2017) and The Wedding Party (2016) were selected for the analysis because these movies characteristics represent cultural representation, critical acclaim and exploration of gender themes. The findings reveal that the study on gender portrayal in four Nigerian films can be compared and contrasted with previous studies that have analyzed Nigerian film and other cultural contexts. This confirms that the films are reiterating certain patriarchal expectations while advocating for renewal. In addition, previous content analyzes of African films have emphasized their use of narratives and multiple layers to effectively construct gendered narratives. This study reflects this and sees how films like Isoken and Aya Alalake show many inspiring women who defy the odds through education and participation without killing. The study recommends that there should be an increase the funding and distribution of films with outstanding women and relationships that are stronger than the characters. Also, provide literacy instruction to help audiences interpret social situations and think from new perspectives.

Abstract

Talking about women's issues is very embedded in society, so it is difficult for women to escape from the labels attached to them. Injustice causes feminism to fight for women's rights. This method focuses on feminist discourse displayed in image text and news. The aim of this research is to determine the subject-object position and the reader's position. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with a critical discourse analysis approach modeled by Sara Mills, the characters Nissa and Rani have the image of a wife who is obedient to her husband and successful in life having to face storms in her household caused by her husband and Rani. This analysis focuses on the depiction of women shown in the film Ipar as death. Therefore, what Sara Mills does is often also referred to as a feminist perspective. The point of attention from a feminist discourse perspective is showing how texts are biased in presenting women as those who are in the wrong.
