Abstract

EF Education First, in its English Proficiency Index, shows data on the low interest in learning English among Indonesian students. Learning English is considered difficult because the material is quite extensive and the reading material is quite difficult. The use of social media is one of the factors that influence students' interest in learning English. This article aims to determine the effect of using social media on interest in learning English. This study uses a literature review approach, namely collecting references, reviewing theories, and analyzing the object being studied. Data were reviewed from all articles or journals published within the last 5 years. The results of this study indicate that the use of information technology, especially social media, can bring positive value if students can use these facilities for more positive things, for example, to increase knowledge, as a means of communication and also as a means of promoting something. The positive impact of students when using social media is to make social media a learning tool, especially language learning. Social media has a positive effect when social media such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok are used as learning media; for example, it is used in making videos which can improve pronunciation and can package interestingly learning English. Thus, students' interest in learning English will increase.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out noun used in a song by Justin Bieber entitled “Lonely”. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. There are several steps researcher conducted, including read the song lyrics, discovered nouns from the lyrics, then classified nouns based on the types. Based on research analysis, researcher discovered 12 nouns with 5 types. Therefore, the research results showed that there are 12 common nouns, 7 for each concrete and countable nouns, and 5 for each abstract and uncountable nouns found in song entitled “Lonely”.

Abstract

Communication skills must be mastered by the teacher as a form of pedagogical competence. Through the communication skills possessed by the teacher, it is hoped that it can foster students' learning motivation to be active in learning so that they can improve their learning achievements. To create effective communication in learning, teachers must have a communication strategy. Communication strategy is a communication technique that is planned and used by the teacher in conveying learning material to students so that they are passionate about learning, want to ask questions of the teacher, and want to give opinions. This research focuses on knowing various teacher communication strategies in learning based on relevant research results. The results of this research study obtained several teacher communication strategies such as the use of verbal and non-verbal communication to carry out learning, creating two-way communication with students with the equalitarian style of communication, using communication media in the learning process, and giving rewards and punishments to participants. educate on the learning process. The results of this research study are expected to be a stimulus for teachers to determine communication strategies in learning as one of the teacher's efforts to create active and fun learning.

Abstract

The current paper aims to investigate the impact of using Instagram to develop vocabulary among Saudi EFL learners. With a descriptive research design, this paper filled a gap in the literature by examining the role of Instagram in building vocabulary among Saudi EFL learners. Therefore, quantitative and qualitative methods were employed. To collect data, the researcher used an online questionnaire and two different types of interviews. The online questionnaire included both closed-ended and open-ended questions, involving 217 Saudi EFL learners. Regarding the interviews, structured interviews were carried out with six Saudi EFL learners to collect detailed information. Additionally, to acquire more information, semi-structured interviews involved four English tutors on Instagram. As a result, the findings revealed that Instagram plays a key role in developing EFL learners' English vocabulary and can be used as a tool to expand their vocabulary. The findings of this study add to prior research in related fields and serve as a resource for researchers studying English language instruction and acquisition as well as EFL learners.

Abstract

The research purpose is to find out the usage of implementation of Question and Answer method in teaching speaking skill to students. The population of the research is students of SMP Negeri 9 Pematang Siantar, with sample of a class consists of 31 students. This research applies quantitative method to collect data for the research. Researchers give oral test to the students and make their scores, then calculate the mean to create conclusion of this research. Based on research results, researchers found that 19 students were able to achieve the score of 65 and beyond, while 12 students were unable to achieve the minimum score (below 65). Therefore, 61% of students have sufficient speaking skills, meanwhile 39% students have weak speaking skills. Question and Answer method is a suitable method that can be utilized by the teachers in teaching English skills to students, especially to teach speaking skill.

Abstract

This research belongs to quantitative research and aims to find the effectiveness of the frontloading strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension based on gender. The instrument given to the students was reading comprehension in the context of a narrative text. The research subject consisted of 25 students. This research only used experimental class for this research. As a result of this research, there was a significant improvement between pre-test and post-test scores. The result obtained from the sample T-test was found that the p-value (0,000) was lower than 0.05, and the t-observed (4,337) was higher than the t-table (2.059). While the result of differences in scores between females and a male based on post-test, the p-value (.240) was higher than 0.05, there were no significant differences in reading comprehension scores between females and males. So, this strategy makes students interested in teaching and learning reading comprehension. This technique also helps students to understand about material easily.

Abstract

This research aims to discover the use of YouTube to improve students’ listening skills. The researcher chose the qualitative method of collecting data, consisting of observation and interviews. Researchers chose SMP N 2 Labuhan Batu Utara as the location to do research with as many as 32 students as participants to collect research data. Based on research findings on observation and interviews, researchers discovered that both students and teachers got benefits by using YouTube in learning English, especially listening skills. According to the observation results, most students enjoyed the learning process. Then according to the interview results, students were more interested in following the learning process, whereas, for the teacher, YouTube was a great medium to help her teach the students. Thus, YouTube is a suitable media that can be used to teach listening to students.

Abstract

Asking activity is one of the efforts made to obtain additional information to build knowledge. Asking activities encourage students to think critically about the learning material being studied. So it is necessary to build students' questioning skills through the learning model applied by the teacher. The focus of this research is to describe the application of the snowball throwing learning model in fostering students' questioning skills in elementary schools. The approach used in this research study is a descriptive qualitative approach with literature studies. In this research study, the authors formulated the problem and continued by tracing existing and relevant research results for analysis. Data collection techniques by browsing electronic journals through Google Scholar and books related to learning. From the results of a study of several previous research results, it shows that the snowball throwing learning model can foster students' questioning skills combined with the game of throwing snowballs. Even with the snowball throwing learning model, students studying in groups do not only ask questions but encourage students to provide answers and explanations of the material. So that it makes students more critical in thinking. The results of this research study are expected to be a stimulus for teachers to facilitate student learning so that they are skilled in asking questions. So that the process of communication in learning in the classroom becomes more active.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The strawberry generation is the generation that was born after 2002. In that year, generally the generation is fragile, like a soft and easily crushed strawberry, which requires special specialization and treatment in the teaching and learning process in the English for business and professional communication (bispro) study program. The urgency of this research is to find out student feedback about perceptions and satisfaction with learning that has been carried out in the bispro study program at bengkalis state polytechnic towards educators to improve the quality provided. The methodology of this research is quantitative with 50 respondents who are categorized as a strawberry generation. The results of this study found that perception affected student satisfaction of 0.445. This can be interpreted as still low, so there needs to be an increase in the quality of lecturers and other support.

Abstract

Islamic teachings highly regulate education. Even placed the responsibility of parents and families in determining the formation of the personality of the child. So the purpose of this study is to describe Islamic Education in the family. The method used is qualitative with a literature study approach when collecting data, then the contents are analyzed descriptively and the last is concluded. The results of the research show that Islamic education is the main pillar in the family, so in concept parents' lives should be colored with compassion based on the values of the Qur'an, hadith, and ijma' ulama. He also acts as a leader, guide, educator, and coach in the child's personality's moral, mental, social, physical, faith, and worship. So a good relationship between parents and children is needed, starting from when he is in the womb, he is prayed for goodness. He is given a good name when he is born, followed by instilling education in aqidah, worship, and morality. And the last is moderate democratic parenting, so it is neither authoritarian nor permissive.
