Abstract

The results of previous research on tourism digitization tend to legitimize the success of optimizing tourism digitization. These studies use the "single case" of tourist villages and digital platforms. Digitalization is not fully effective in supporting tourism performance. The purpose of this research is to reveal the utility of various digital media and tourist destinations in the structure of market competition. This study uses descriptive qualitative research methods. The study found that village tourism types are categorized into mass, live-in and religious tourism. All villages vary digital media in dissimilar preferences. Market structure analysis ensures that a small number of tourist villages become market leaders-forming monopoly market structure, while the majority are peripheral tourism villages. Digital multimedia options and types of tours are placed to win the performance. Four digitization and performance patterns are stated as effective, ineffective, not yet effective, and not digitalized. In mass tourism, multimedia is too effective in supporting the position of market leader.  In live-in and religious tourism villages, it was found to be ineffective and not digitized, but the characteristics of these two types of villages need another performance review approach. This study suggests important policies are needed to improve market structure.

Abstract

The need to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is universal for all high-, middle-, and low-income nations, but the momentum was disrupted by COVID-19. Tourism is an important sector to address SDGs where the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) emphasizes the positive role tourism could play toward meeting those goals. This paper is conceptually grounded within the scope of the SDGs and uses a case study approach. It uses the case of Nepal, a developing country, to demonstrate the struggles of developing nations to meet SDGs within the context of the pandemic. Based on the literature and available secondary data, similar cases are discussed to establish relevance for global contexts by reflecting how other developing nations with troubled tourism ecosystems due to the pandemic will negatively impact the movement on meeting SDGs. Further, future directions are proposed to gain momentum toward responding to the SDGs. Indeed, developing nations will struggle more than others, as the priority has been to deal with the COVID-19 impacts with limited available resources.

Abstract

Bali tourism was experiencing difficult times with minus growth during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, Bali tourism has’nt recovered as before yet. This proves that the Bali tourism development model based on mass tourism cannot provide comfort and security for the people of Bali. Amid this crisis, it was difficult for Balinese people to return to the agricultural sector due to the decline in agricultural land. Therefore, finding a model for tourism development in Bali for the future was a serious matter. This model must also touch on the philosophy of tourism development in Bali, namely Tri Hita Karana. The results of the analysis show that this philosophy cannot work in the context of mass tourism development. This philosophy can only work in small-scale rural tourism development. Therefore, the ideal Bali tourism model was a small-scale rural tourism model. This model was also threatened by the development of mass tourism. Therefore, the government must pay more attention to the development of small-scale tourism businesses, which were stronger in times of crisis because the small-scale business model was a model of sustainable tourism development in the new normal era.

Abstract

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism sector was the strongest sector in the world economy. The great strength of the tourism sector is proven by the rapid recovery of the sector after the COVID-19 pandemic. The tourism sector includes several things, including exhibitions, expos, and festivals. The purpose of this study was to find out how the rational thinking process of the Bener Meriah Regency government was used in choosing a sector for marketing Gayo coffee. This study used a qualitative approach with interview and observation techniques. The results of this study show that the tourism sector is one of the choices for the Bener Meriah Regency government in marketing Gayo coffee products. The tourism sector, in this case, is exhibition, expo, and festival activities. This activity is considered beneficial for Gayo coffee marketing because it can directly bring together coffee producers with tourists who are potential customers. Therefore, the Bener Meriah Regency government, taking into account (rational) resources and profits, chose the tourism sector to market Gayo coffee.

Abstract

Slum areas are often seen in urban spatial policy gaps. The slum area becomes a dilemma, it portrays the unsuccessful management of a city area, on the other hand the reality of the city has the potential to become slum area tourism as an alternative attraction for tourism in urban areas.  Efforts made by stakeholders in terms of city management tend to ignore slum areas as a city reality that has never touched a solution to the problem. Slum areas with social problems require real solutions.  Through tourism in slum areas, residents innovate to represent and interpret their territory to find solutions for themselves. So far, studies on slum area tourism regarding how local residents represent and interpret their territory are still rare. Therefore, this study tries to look at the initiative to practice representation and interpretation of local residents in their area, and how stakeholders represent slum areas in their area through a qualitative study using a city tourism approach. Based on the results of data collection, a description of the situation of slum areas and their communities can practically represent themselve as the reality of the city and present themselve as part of the development of city tourism. By imaging the slum area, local people earn income from interacting with tourists who hope to get a complete experience of the city's tourist destinations they visit. On the other hand, local communities who are involved in the practice of representing slum area tourism indirectly criticize city management by displaying the contrast between slum area residents and tourists through digital media within the framework of local initiatives as a form of development participation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the involvement of fisherwomen in managing tourism villages and the relationship between actors involved in tourism management. The researcher chose Benan Island as the research location, one of the small islands in Lingga Regency, Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach, and the interpretation of the results of data analysis uses spidergram images according to the priority scale. Data collection uses the method of study documentation, observation, Focus Group Discussion, and in-depth interviews. The study results show that fisherwomen's level of involvement in village tourism management still needs to be higher. The management of tourism in the village has a top-down pattern. Namely, the district government assigns village tourism management personnel. Such a management system makes it difficult for the women's community to participate actively.
