Abstract

Background: Maternal mortality rate (MMR) is the number of maternal deaths caused by pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum or their management. In 2015, the global maternal mortality rate was estimated to reach 303,000 cases. According to WHO (2015), maternal deaths are estimated to be more than 585,000 per year due to pregnancy and/or childbirth. Caesarean section (CS) delivery is a surgical process aimed at delivering a fetus through an incision in the abdominal wall and uterine wall. CS delivery is carried out based on medical indications from both the mother and fetus, which can endanger the lives of both the mother and fetus. The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors for Caesarean section procedures at the Sitti Khadijah 1 Muhammadiyah Makassar Maternity and Child Hospital (RSIA). Method: The study used a quantitative study with an analytical observational research design with a cross-sectional approach. Results: The results of this study are that maternal age greatly influences pregnancy, a good age for pregnancy ranges from 20-35 years. At that age, the female reproductive organs have developed and functioned optimally. On the other hand, for women aged <20 years or >35 years, it is not good to get pregnant because pregnancy at this age has a high risk, such as miscarriage or failed labor, delivery with assistive devices such as forceps or CS, and can even cause death. Conclusion: Maternal age is a risk factor for cesarean section at Sitti Khadijah 1 Muhammadiyah Makassar Hospital in 2021. Maternal parity is not a risk factor for cesarean section at Sitti Khadijah 1 Muhammadiyah Makassar Hospital in 2021.

Abstract

Pain is an unpleasant experience characterized by potential tissue damage. One plant that has the potential to inhibit pain through its chemical compounds, namely flavonoids and alkaloids, is carrot peel (Daucus carota L.). The purpose of this study was to determine the analgesic activity of carrot peel extract in male mice. Carrot peel was extracted using the maceration method with 96% solvent. This study used 15 mice as test animals, which were divided into 5 treatment groups, namely the negative control group (CMC-Na), the positive control group (Sodium Diclofenac), carrot peel extract 100 mg/kgBW, 150 mg/kgBW, and 200 mg/kgBW. The test was conducted using the tail flick method with an analgesia measuring device. The test was conducted using the tail flick method with an analgesia measuring device. The data obtained were then analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The results showed that the three doses of carrot peel ethanol extract, 100 mg/kgBW, 150 mg/kgBW, and 200 mg/kgBW, did not have analgesic activity in male mice.

Abstract

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders experienced by older adults. Its prevalence among this population is relatively high, both nationally and internationally, and it is frequently associated with decreased quality of life, increased risk of chronic diseases, and psychological burden. This article aims to comprehensively review the factors influencing the risk of insomnia in older adults, including lifestyle, psychological conditions, environmental aspects, and physical illnesses. The method employed is a literature review, which involves collecting and analyzing 20 national and international journals published between 2006 and 2024. The findings indicate that insomnia in older adults does not occur in isolation but is influenced by a complex interaction between internal factors (psychological, physical illness, and lifestyle) and external factors (environment). This review is expected to provide both academic and practical contributions, particularly for healthcare practitioners, nurses, and researchers, in formulating evidence-based interventions to improve sleep quality in older adults.

Abstract

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major complication of diabetes, leading to proteinuria and declining kidney function. Candesartan, an angiotensin receptor blocker, may offer renal benefits beyond blood pressure control. Its specific effects on creatinine and proteinuria in geriatric DN patients remain underexplored. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 25 geriatric DN outpatients at Puri Raharja Hospital. Using consecutive sampling, subjects receiving 16 mg candesartan daily had their serum creatinine and proteinuria levels evaluated from medical records at baseline and after three months. The cohort (60-82 years) comprised 13 men and 12 women. Initial creatinine ranged from 0.80-2.60 mg/dL, with a final mean of 1.395 ± 0.50 mg/dL. Statistical analysis (paired T-test) showed no significant change in creatinine levels (p=0.892). However, proteinuria significantly decreased post-treatment (Wilcoxon test, p=0.005). Candesartan administration did not significantly reduce serum creatinine in geriatric DN patients over three months. However, the significant reduction in proteinuria indicates a beneficial effect on renal pathology, potentially slowing DN progression in this population.

Abstract

Ultraviolet light exposure creates free radicals in skin causing skin problems. To overcome this, sunscreens containing synthetic chemical substances can absorb ultraviolet rays and ward off free radicals that are formed, but the downside of sunscreen creams and lotions is that they are sticky and need to be adjusted to human skin type. Essential oil from Cymbopogon nardus L. containing citronellal, geraniol, and other flavonoid compounds which have sunscreen and antioxidant activity can be developed into a sunscreen preparation, namely spray sunscreen which is non-sticky and suitable for all skin types. The objective of this study was to obtain a sunscreen spray formula containing citronella essential oil that meets all physical preparation test requirements and has the highest SPF value. The research design is laboratory experimental study with citronella essential oil formulated in four variations of sunscreen spray formula (F0, F1, F2, F3) with concentrations of 0%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%. The research methods are essential oil extraction by steam-water distillation, phytochemical screening, formulation, physical evaluation (organoleptic, pH, homogeneity, and viscosity testing), dan SPF activity test using spectrophotometer UV-Vis. All formulas exhibited acceptable physical characteristics with a constant pH of 7, homogeneous, and varying viscosity. The highest SPF values was F3 (12.13±0.00) with low protection. These results indicate that citronella essential oil can be incorporated into a sunscreen spray formulation that meets physical quality requirements and provides UV protection with the highest SPF value owned by F3.

Abstract

Early mobilization is a critical postoperative intervention to accelerate recovery and prevent complications in mothers who undergo cesarean section. This study aims to describe the implementation of early mobilization and its effects on improving physical mobility among post– cesarean section patients at RSD K.R.M.T Wongsonegoro Semarang. Using a descriptive case study design, two patients who met the inclusion criteria were observed during the early postoperative phase. Data were obtained through direct observation and nursing documentation, focusing on mobility performance before and after the intervention. Early mobilization consisted of Range of Motion (ROM) exercises performed for 10–15 minutes over two consecutive days. The results showed that both patients experienced improvements in ease of movement and walking ability. The first patient, initially requiring total assistance, progressed to moving and ambulating with minimal assistance using supportive devices. The second patient, who initially demonstrated minimal mobility with dependency, improved to performing movements and walking with reduced assistance and without devices. These findings indicate that early mobilization effectively enhances muscle strength, blood circulation, and functional independence while reducing postoperative discomfort and fear of movement. Factors such as motivation, pain tolerance, and family support also influenced the level of progress achieved by each patient. Overall, early mobilization contributed positively to postoperative rehabilitation and supported a faster return to functional mobility. The study highlights the importance of integrating structured early mobilization into nursing care to optimize physical recovery and improve the overall quality of life for post–cesarean section mothers.

Abstract

Early Initiation of Breastfeeding (IMD) is a critical intervention for improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes. However, maternal knowledge regarding IMD remains inconsistent, particularly in urban settings. This study aimed to examine the effect of video-based education on pregnant women’s knowledge of IMD in Makassar City.  This study employed a quasi experimental one-group pretest–posttest design, involving 35 third-trimester pregnant women selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a 20-item IMD knowledge questionnaire. The intervention consisted of an educational video on IMD, with knowledge assessed before and after viewing. The results indicated a significant improvement in maternal knowledge, with mean scores increasing from 11.14 to 16.57. A paired t-test revealed t = 14.82 and p = 0.000 (p < 0.05), confirming that video-based education has a significant effect on enhancing knowledge. The study concludes that educational videos are an effective, engaging, and accessible medium for strengthening maternal understanding of IMD and may serve as an evidence-based strategy for antenatal education in healthcare facilities.

Abstract

Maternal oral health is a critical yet often overlooked component of prenatal care, despite its significant association with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm birth and Low Birth Weight (LBW). At the Wolowa Community Health Center (Puskesmas) in Buton Regency, a lack of awareness among pregnant women regarding the importance of dental care has led to low utilization of dental clinic services. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the "GERIGI" (Gerakan Peduli Gigi Ibu Hamil or Maternal Dental Care Movement) innovative program in enhancing maternal oral health knowledge. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-test/post-test approach. A sample of 15 pregnant women was selected using purposive sampling. The intervention involved integrating dental health education into the Antenatal Care (ANC) service workflow, utilizing pamphlets and dental phantoms as educational aids, alongside direct clinical examinations. The findings demonstrated a significant increase in the mean knowledge score from 69.33% at pre-test to 86.33% at post-test. Effectiveness analysis using the Normalized Gain (N-gain) yielded a score of 0.54, indicating that the program falls within the "moderate effectiveness" category. The GERIGI program effectively improves maternal cognition through a collaborative, cross-program approach between the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) unit and the Dental Unit. It is concluded that integrating dental services into routine prenatal care is an effective promotive and preventive strategy and is recommended to be institutionalized as a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in primary healthcare facilities.
