Abstract

Background: Cancer gravely affects the physical, psychological, emotional, and economic conditions of not only the patient who has been afflicted but also the friends and loved ones, especially those who are involved in caregiving. Extended hospital stays place greater demands on caregivers, highlighting the crucial role of family caregivers (FCGs) as primary patient support. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the experiences of FCG of cancer patients who are admitted to the tertiary care hospitals of Islamabad, Pakistan. Methods: A qualitative exploratory descriptive study design was used. The sample size was 16 FCGs of cancer patients from public and private hospitals. Data collection involved face-to-face interviews. Data was analyzed by using the following sequential process of data analysis. Result: FCGs experience significant physical and emotional challenges while caring for critically ill cancer patients. They endure hardships of caregiving by providing physical care and a few of the imposed tasks like drawing blood and intravenous infusions. The emotional toll is profound, leading to psychological distress and neglect of their well-being. The financial strain impacted the education of children of FCGs, the loss of jobs, and the selling of property to manage cancer treatment. To cope with these challenges, FCGs relied on the teachings of their faith, offering religious prayers, and diverting minds using social media. FCGs emphasized the need for improved communication and attitudes of healthcare staff. Conclusion: This study highlighted the physical, emotional, and financial hardships endured while providing care. However, their personal needs often go unnoticed and may become ineffective in supporting patients. Therefore, healthcare professionals must develop targeted support programs for FCGs.

Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that affects the glandular tissue, ductal glands, and supporting structures of the breast. Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is an early detection method aimed at increasing women's awareness of their own breast condition, enabling them to recognize early signs and symptoms such as changes in size, texture, and shape. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment, especially when the cancer is found in its initial stages. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of health education on adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes regarding BSE. Method: This study employed a one-group pretest-posttest design with a sample of 17 adolescents. The research instruments included a standard operating procedure (SOP) and a questionnaire containing questions related to knowledge and attitudes before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: Prior to the health education intervention, the average level of knowledge and attitudes among adolescents regarding BSE was categorized as fairly good, with percentages of 52.9% and 58.8%, respectively. After the intervention, there was a significant increase in knowledge and attitudes, with posttest percentages of 82.4% and 52.2%, respectively. The Wilcoxon test yielded an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, indicating that the hypothesis was accepted, as the significance value was less than 0.05. Conclusion: Health education significantly influenced the improvement of adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes regarding BSE. This improvement indicates that health education is effective in raising awareness among adolescents about the importance of early detection of breast cancer through BSE.

Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension, also known as the silent killer, often goes unnoticed by sufferers. It is characterized by a systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and a diastolic pressure ≥ 90 mmHg. Kiwi fruit (Actinidia deliciosa) is rich in vitamin C and is highly beneficial for lowering high blood pressure. Warm foot soak therapy involves immersing the feet up to 10–15 cm above the ankles in warm water (39–40°C) for approximately 15 minutes. This method promotes vasodilation and body relaxation, which can help lower blood pressure. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the combination of kiwi juice (Actinidia deliciosa) and warm foot soaking in reducing blood pressure among individuals with hypertension in RT 004, Pangkalan Jati Baru Village, Cinere, Depok. Method: This study employed a quantitative research method with a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The sample was selected through non-probability sampling using purposive sampling technique, involving 20 respondents. Data were collected using an observation sheet. Results: The Wilcoxon test results comparing pre-test and post-test data showed that if the Asymp. Sig < 0.05, the hypothesis test interpretation concludes that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Conclusion: The combination of kiwi juice (Actinidia deliciosa) and warm foot soaking is effective in reducing both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in individuals with hypertension.
