Abstract

The study entitled “Speech Act Expressions in the Advertisements on Television: A Case Study of Three Advertisements Both Food & Health Products and Cell-phone Provider” seeks to illuminate the types of speech acts based on Searle (1979) and the approaches of advertisements proposed by Book and Schick (1996). This study mainly uses a qualitative method to analyze the collected data in this research. The data sources are in the form of verbal texts, namely, statements of the speaker’s dialogue and narration both Food & Health Product and cell-phone provider advertisements. These advertisements were taken from several private TV stations aired during 1st March – 30th April 2010. The three advertisements were selected and categorized into four styles, namely, dramatizations, demonstrations, presentations, and testimonials. These commercials were classified into three tones, namely, factual, emotional, and humorous. Furthermore, the research was conducted to investigate the types of speech acts expressed in these different styles and tones of advertisements, namely representatives, directives, commissives, expressive, and declaratives. The study has discovered three tones within testimonial, demonstration, and presentation styles.  Furthermore, it has exposed one emotional tone within presentation style.  And two factual tones within testimonial and demonstration styles. This research has obtained linguistic notion and comprehension for students who are engaged in learning speech act expression in several utterances, mainly advertisements. Keywords: speech act, advertisement, style, tone

Abstract

This study attempts to investigate thanking strategies used by Indonesian EFL learners based on contextual factors i.e. social status and social distance. The participants were 50 semester three students studying English for Business at a state polytechnic in Bandung. The participants were both male and female, aging from 19-20 years old. Data were collected via a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) adopted from Cheng (2005) and analyzed using thanking strategy taxonomy proposed by the same author. The DCT consisted of ten different scenarios describing the most common situations that students may encounter in their college life. The results of this study indicated that the most preferred thanking strategies used by Indonesian EFL learners were thanking, alerters (i.e., title) and positive feelings.  In terms of social status and social distance, the findings revealed that thanking and apology strategies were the most used strategies in equal-status with low-familiarity situations.  In situations within which learners shared equal-status with high-familiarity, the most strategies employed were thanking and positive feelings. Regarding thanking strategies used in low-status with low-familiarity situations, thanking and repayment strategies seemed to be the most preferred ones.  Keywords: thanking, strategies, social status, social distance

Abstract

The study investigated the extensive writing performance of the students across three proficiency levels of English: Advanced, Intermediate and Elementary. From each level, three students were selected purposively to represent high-, middle- and low-achievers. Their nine pieces of writing were then assessed by means of the theory of patterns of cohesion (Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004; Eggins, 2004; Paltridge, 2006; Salkie, 1995; and Gerot & Wignell, 1994). The patterns consist of five cohesive devices: reference, conjunction, lexical cohesion, ellipsis and substitution. The assessment focused on analyzing the students’ failures in observing the patterns. The study, therefore, resembles an error analysis but adopts the cohesive devices, instead of linguistic/ grammatical classifications or other kinds of taxonomy as the sources of errors. As such, the study is the first that introduced the uses the devices as the sources of errors. Further, the errors made by the learners were calculated and compared with the total number of the words they wrote in their essay writing. This way, the data concerning the frequency of the failures in the cohesive devices across the students’ levels were obtained, tabulated and then discussed. Based on the results, a model of an analytic scoring guide was proposed to be used for assessing the students’ writing performance by considering the differences of levels. The model is expected to be useful for writing teachers as it has a higher level of practicality and measurability compared with other available analytic scoring methods.Key words: extensive writing, analytic scoring guide, cohesion, cohesive devices, error analysis, taxonomy

Abstract

Students make mistakes because they practice to produce the language. However, sometimes the students do not realize that they make mistakes when they do exercises. Hence, they need to be shown on the mistakes as parts of the feedback that the teacher give in a process of teaching and learning. Written works of elementary students to a certain extent are similar with the spoken language that they produce when they practice. Accordingly, analyzing the grammar mistakes on written works of the language students of elementary level is very useful as it can be used as input for elementary students when they learn to communicate both in oral and written. The present study is an attempt to find out the mistakes that the students make on the basis on their written productions. The result shows there some grammatical aspects that the students constantly produced. As their elementary written work is similar with that in their spoken language, the present study will be beneficial for language teachers in pre-assuming and emphasizing on what to teach in elementary level. Keywords: language errors/mistakes, feedback, written works, elementary students

Abstract

This research mainly discusses the correlation between students’ attitudes towards peer reviewing with their writing proficiency to the 1st year English Department students of STKIP Subang in Writing for General Purposes Subject. The population of this study is the 1st semester English Department students on STKIP Subang. And there are 62 students as sample chosen through simple random sampling. There are two variables used in this study: the students’ mid-term examination writing score and the result of students’ responses in questionnaires. Correlational Design which is commonly used subset of Ex Post Facto Design is chosen in this study since it tends to look at the type and/or degree of relationship between two variables. The study finds that there is a positive correlation, although there is no significant correlation between students’ attitudes toward peer reviewing with their writing proficiency. This study also divides students’ attitudes of peer reviewing into three categories; students that like to do peer editing, both like and dislike it (neutral), and they that dislike it. Key Words: student’s attitudes, peer reviewing, writing proficiency

Abstract

The article is about an analysis of translation of idioms in the novel by Conan Doyle entitled A Study in Scarlet. Translating idioms is often problematic for a translator because idioms are specific to a single language and rarely have the equivalent in other languages. Therefore, this study was conducted to find out the types of idioms used in the English version of the novel, to find out the strategies used by the translator of the Indonesian version of the novel in translating the English idioms, and to find out the accuracy, acceptability and readability of the translation of the idioms in the novel. In analysing the idioms and their translation, qualitative method was used, and the theories by Fernando (1996), Baker (2011) and Nababan, Nuraini, and Sumardiono (2012) were also used. The finding of the analysis shows that from 60 idioms found, semi-idiom is the type of idioms which is frequently found in the novel (31 idioms or 52%). Besides, it is revealed that translating the idioms by paraphrasing is the strategy which is mostly used by the translator in translating the idioms (38 idioms or 63%). In addition, it is revealed that the translation of idioms in the novel is accurate and acceptable although it is less readable. So, the quality of translation of idioms in the novel is good although it can be still improved. Keywords: accuracy, acceptability and readability of translation, idiom, translation, translation strategies

Abstract

The present research is analysing job ads to find out the jobs that require English skills and other skills apart from English language. The job ads analysed were those that appeared on well-known Indonesian newspapers which were published in the periods of May, June and July 2016. The research found that all of the four language skills were required in the world of work, the emphasis, however, is put on active language skills such as speaking and writing. The present research also suggest that most of all professional position especially of administrative officers require their applicants to have English skills.Computer skill as well as communication skill have become the main supporting skills in applying for jobs. Despite the fact that  they are all Indonesian newspapers using Indonesian as the main language, a number of ads were written in English. Although such a proportion is still below the number of ads written in Indonesian, those English language ads show us how important English is to the applicants.   Keywords:job ads, English skills, applicants
