Abstract

The major objective of this study is to analyze grammatical errors found on Instagram and Twitter captions. It is intended to recognize the most common grammatical errors so that we can be aware of the language that we use. The present study applies the theory of Dulay et al (1982) which divides errors into four types: omission, addition, misinformation, and misordering. Since all of the data are in the form of text, a method of textual analysis was applied to analyze the data. The data under analysis are taken from the captions by influencers using English on Instagram and Twitter. The result of the study showed there were 152 errors found from 100 captions and they were classified into misinformation (46%), misordering (3%), addition (16%), and omission (35%). The errors were also classified into grammatical units. Those errors in grammatical units are subject-verb agreement with a total of 16 errors, singular-plural with 15 errors, tense/verb form with 31 errors, word form with 23 errors, capitalization with 28 errors, apostrophe error with 25 errors, missing comma with six errors, article usage error with three errors, wrong/missing preposition with four errors, and word use error with two errors. The most grammatical error that frequently occurs in the Instagram caption is tense/verb with 23 (22%) occurrences and a total of 17 (30%) occurrences of apostrophe errors on Twitter.

Abstract

Introductory textbooks of undergraduate students contain commonly accommodate numerous technical terms which are commonly in form of abstract nouns. The technical terms naturally represent the knowledge of the discipline which serve to build the knowledge of the field. Unfortunately, the technical terms tend to use abstract words which require definition to understand them. Hence, understanding the construction of a definition will help the learners of the field understand the texts. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the construction of definition appearing in technical terms appearing in disciplinary texts, like mechanical engineering textbooks. The qualitative data were collected from introductory textbooks of mechanical engineering. The results of analysis using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) reveal several findings. First, definition is realized by clause complex consisting of main clause and subordinate clause. Consequently, the clause has hypotactic relation and semantic one. The main clause is realized by intensive clause with relational process realized by some lexical verbs. Whereas subordinate clause is realized by non-finite or finite clause of possessive or circumstantial clause. The subordinate clause semantically serves as elaboration of the Thing in the main clause. The elaboration can be formed as function/properties/duration/condition/results which make the Thing in the main clause definite. Based on these findings, definition can be formulated as intensive clause (main clause) + possessive/circumstantial clause of non-finite/finite clause (subordinate clause). The findings also have implication on ESP or EAP learning which can help learners in academic reading and writing.

Abstract

This article is about a multimodal analysis of an Indonesian cookbook entitled Indonesian Cakes & Desserts by Wongso and Tobing (2002) written in English intended for English speakers. The aim is to show how writing and images relations are used to convey the meanings of the recipes. Cookbooks from non-English culture written in English have rarely become the subject of research using a multimodal approach. Such cookbooks may create a problem to the audiences as they may not be familiar with the food. Therefore, it is important to investigate how writing and images in the Indonesian cookbook are integrated to be understood by the English audience. The intermodal text-image integration from Unsworth and Cléirigh (2009) is used to show how writing and images are integrated in the cookbook to construct meanings. The results are that the intensive identification of images and language is used to introduce some ingredients, and the intermodal circumstantial identifications of locations visualizing Manner: quality and Causal-condition: result are used to explain some steps on how to cook the food in some recipes. These findings may contribute to expand the use of intermodal text-image integration in texts introducing items or processes that are foreign to the reader.

Abstract

The quality of the research background provides readers with the essential context needed to understand the research problem. Therefore, it is crucial to enhance the quality of this section. This study investigates the comparison of the Move and Step structures between engineering and non-engineering students’ final project report background using Swales’ (2012) Create a Research Space (CARS) Move/Step analysis model. Data were collected from 71 students’ final project reports at a polytechnic in Bandung, comprising 35 from engineering fields and 36 from non-engineering fields. The results indicate that both fields incorporate Move 1, Move 2, and Move 3. In Move 1, both fields use Step 2 (Making topic Generalization) to establish a research area. Meanwhile, in Move 2, step 2 (Indicating a Gap) and step 4 (Continuing a Tradition) are frequently applied in non-engineering fields to establish a research niche. In Move 3, both fields use step 1A (Outlining Purposes) to describe their studies. The findings suggest no significant difference in the Move and Step structures between engineering and non-engineering fields. These insights may contribute to improving the quality of students’ final project reports.

Abstract

This research entitled Analysis of Idioms Used in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland aims to identify idioms, classify them into idiom types based on Lim's (2004) theory, classify the clues used to guess the idiom meanings, and analyse the meaning from the context. The object of this research is a novel by Lewis Carroll entitled Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The subject of this research is idioms. The result shows that there are 113 idioms categorised into 6 types of idioms, including phrasal verb idioms, prepositional phrase idioms, idioms with verbs as keywords, idioms with nouns as keywords, idioms with adjectives as keywords, and idiomatic pairs. The type of idioms with nouns as keywords is the most widely used with 45.1% of the total. The idioms that have been identified are then interpreted using 2 clues, namely linguistic and non-linguistic. Most of the idioms were identified using linguistic clues with 81%. Some idiom dictionaries are used as linguistic clues, while non-linguistic clues consider idioms based on cultural aspects, situations, experiences, and habits. The interpretation of the meaning is then adjusted to the context of the story in the novel.

Abstract

This study investigates the factors and types of speaking anxiety experienced by eleventh-grade students at SMAN 11 Pandeglang during the 2024/2025 academic year. Speaking anxiety is a common issue in foreign language learning that can negatively affect students’ performance, confidence, and motivation. The research focuses on four major factors contributing to speaking anxiety: low English proficiency, lack of familiarity with the task, low confidence, and fear of making mistakes. Before distributing the questionnaire, short interviews were conducted with two students one male and one female to gain initial insights into their feelings and difficulties when speaking English in class. These interviews ensured that the questionnaire items were clear, relevant, and contextually appropriate. The questionnaire, which aimed only to identify the types and factors of anxiety without influencing students’ emotions, was administered to 25 students. The results revealed that fear of making mistakes was the dominant factor (27.1%), followed by lack of familiarity with the task (25.9%), lack of confidence (24.6%), and low English proficiency (22.3%). Regarding the types of anxiety, trait anxiety was found to be slightly more prevalent (51.5%) than state anxiety (48.4%). Data were collected through questionnaires and classroom observations, providing a comprehensive understanding of students’ anxiety experiences. These findings emphasize the need for English teachers to foster a supportive and low-anxiety classroom environment by offering constructive feedback, designing familiar and engaging speaking tasks, and helping students build self-confidence in their language learning process.
